Happy 3rd birthday 🎂 to this sweet, funny and oh so earnest gal. Not keen on a fuss, appalled by high pitched baby voice attempts, and by my side no matter what. ❤️ her so so much.

When your wedding is basically an excuse for a photoshoot with your dogs 🎉🐶🐶 🎉 Huge thanks to Penny Ryan Photography for capturing an amazing event. Very proud of these two for coping with a lot of novelty in one day AND refraining from putting muddy paws on our outfits 🐾
If you want to involve your dogs on special days - I totally get it. Before you start planning, however, it's so important to assess if it's the right thing for your individual dog. And if it's not, there are plenty of other ways they can be included (dog themed cake topper anyone?). Enzo did a fabulous job strolling down the aisle, but this would have been too much for sensitive Zelda so she stayed home with our wonderful dog sitter. We also asked a trusted friend to look after Enzo throughout the ceremony so he was safe and secure (thanks again Make-up by Inèz!). We chose simple harnesses (rather than outfits) from Dizzy Dog Collars, and the following week was kept low key and restful (for us and them!).
Big thanks to Alexis of Un-Chase for making the trip to Victoria and running a series of workshops in the Goldfields and Gippsland. We were lucky to have wonderful (two and four legged) participants taking part. It was so impressive to see how much progress everyone made in a short space of time. What a fun and action packed few days! 🐶❤️🧠
We had a great time in the Goldfields for the Un-Chase!® workshops on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 May.
Thanks to all the students who came to learn new skills and teach their dogs important safety behaviours around animals and things that move!
SOLD OUT (limited observer tickets available via alldogsaregood.com/classes)
🐍Un-Chase! Snakes: LAST opportunity to join this weekend!🐍

Un-Chase! Snakes founder Alexis Davison is visiting the Goldfields region as part of her Victoria tour. We have an opportunity for two more participants to join us for this special snake avoidance workshop on Saturday 6 May in Elphinstone. We cover the principles of teaching your dog to avoid snakes in the environment, using only reward-based methods.

How much sleep does a puppy need? How much exercise? And what is that word 'socialisation' really all about? If you have a new puppy (under 16 weeks) come along to the FINAL puppy course of 2022! Starting next Thursday 24 November in Daylesford - only one spot remaining. Join us for four weeks of fun, learning and cute puppy antics. Full details at www.alldogsaregood.com/puppyclasses.
For those local to Castlemaine/Daylesford, this is a great opportunity to get a free nose work taster this weekend! Julie of Positive Paws Dog Training offers nose work in Romsey so if you enjoy it you could also sign up to a course in future. Get those sniffers ready! 👃🐶
*** UPDATE: THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST, SHARES AND EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST. WE NOW HAVE ENOUGH. I WILL BE CONFIRMING PLACES TODAY.
I'm urgently looking for dogs who have never done K9 Nose Work to do a few introductory searches this weekend in Romsey.
These searches will be filmed as part of my NASCW certification.
This opportunity will be suitable for people who have done K9 Nose Work before with another dog. Or maybe you have a friend or neighbour who might want to try our NW without committing to a whole course?
There will be no Class Introduction as such - just searches. If you are coming with a different dog you've heard it all before.
For people who have never attended a K9 Nose Work course before, there is an online intro talk they will be asked to watch prior.
There are two time slots available - SATURDAY 5th or SUNDAY 6th - at 4.30 pm. THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THIS SESSION.
Depending on numbers, I expect each dog will get about 3 or 4 searches. Please get in contact with me if you are interested and available.
Thank you Vets For Compassion for this important reminder. I'm often asked about what to do when it comes to dogs and wildlife, especially snakes and kangaroos. Prevention is everything - invest in a quality harness and long lead and prioritise the safety of our incredible wildlife 🧡🦘 You can take a look at brands I recommend at www.alldogsaregood.com/recommendations
Despite their opposite personalities, interests and priorities, this sweet friendship continues to deepen. I 🧡 see all the social learning taking place.

The sweetest little lizard-dog 🦎 🐕 around. Happy Sunday! 🧡
Once you have the 🐶 bug, it can be hard not to integrate dogs into all parts of your life, including holidays. It was pretty special to spend 6 weeks in London recently catching up with friends and amazing mentors (thanks Winkie🧡 for the laughs, wisdom, hangs and wine 🍷). I also got to tour WagWorks - an impressive and inspiring new centre for dog care. It was a trip filled with loads of dog action and learning 🧠 which I'm excited to now implement back home!

"So, for now, I’m going with love. And my hope is that it might encourage us to reflect on our relationship with dogs and the way that they are treated by us. Because if dogs can love us, then isn’t the responsibility on us to treat them with the emotional care and consideration they deserve?"💯🧡

For some dogs, especially ones that live alone, their interactions with other dogs can be largely superficial - a quick hi and bye on a dog walk. Seeking out regular buddies they can hang with can be hugely beneficial, and it's so lovely to watch them light up when they see their close dog friends. We often have dogs to stay and try to link up regularly with dogs (and humans!) we know for walks and outings. It's also why I run social walk classes - these can be a great opportunity to connect with a consistent group. Does your dog have a BFF?

"The expectation is all too often that their love for us be manifested through their obedience as a mark of their visible gratitude, and when it’s not, they suffer for not keeping up their side of an agreement to which they never agreed in the first place." A lovely article from Learning About Dogs
https://www.learningaboutdogs.com/in-praise-of-naughty-dogs/?
"There has been much speculation on when barking evolved, but it is thought to have been as a result of domestication, and may have evolved after the fast-twitching muscles that gave dogs flexibility for facial expressions."

"Though such an examination may be uncomfortable, we must consider that even a highly trained dog who is performing what is considered to be a vital and highly valued function to an individual or to society, may not necessarily or consistently be experiencing a high quality of life."
Great insights from The Science Dog about this recent study.

"Recognizing that dogs are social creatures who need company, and that they need to have a choice in interactions, will make a big difference to the dog in your home."

I'm also a soft dog trainer 😚 In fact, if the only way to live well with dogs involved pain, coercion and control, there's no way I would have fallen in love with this work. If you're reaching for harsh tools or methods, it's time to improve your skills! 🧡

Puppy classes a great way to provide your puppy with safe and positive social experiences, learn new skills and connect with others who are also surviving the puppy raising stage! Join our next course in Daylesford starting Thursday 21 April - alldogsaregood.com/puppyclasses 🐶🧡
Set your dog up for success! 🏅 I enjoy taking my duo along for outings, including a cheeky pint at the pub. This kind of activity isn't for all dogs though, and there are times when it isn't right for my guys either, such as when they're tired or in locations that are particularly busy.
Listening to and supporting your dog means:
⏲ Don't overdo it - start with short durations, pick quiet times of day and always be willing and prepared to leave if your dog isn't having a good time
🐕 Pay attention to body language - if your dog is trying to hide, stiffening up, unable to settle or fixating on everything around them, it may be time to call it day
🚨 Create a safe space - choose a location with minimal traffic and provide a blanket or towel for your dog to lie on. This can help them relax and also provides a clear visual signal for others to avoid stepping over them.
🦴 Bringing a tasty chew can give them something to do while you hang out together. Just be aware that if your dog tends to guard resources, this may add stress, especially if there are other dogs around.
🛑 Be your dog's advocate - if someone wants to touch your dog, it's ok to say no! For many dogs being touched by loads of strangers can be confronting and unsettling, regardless of how 'friendly' they are. Protect their space and don't let them become trapped or cornered.
🧡 Give them loads of positive feedback for being such patient and lovely companions!
Terms like alpha and dominance have been extremely damaging to dogs and our relationship with them for decades. They're also based on misunderstandings of how social structures actually work in wolf packs, groups of dogs and even human families.

"You cannot make a puppy clingy or needy or anxious or hyper-attached to you, by giving them the comfort and security they need, in a way they want, when they ask for it. In fact the reverse is true". Some great insights from Canine Consultant.
https://www.thecanineconsultants.co.uk/post/oh-no-my-puppy-is-clingy?
"Dogs do form emotional bonds, and hence the loss of a companion animal in their household can be expected to cause behavioural changes, like those we recorded in our study, which overlap what we normally interpret as being grief and mourning."

These are important conversations and it's heartening to see such discussions now happening in mainstream media.

Little and big learning to get along during puppy class 🧡 Despite the size difference these two have become firm friends. It's wonderful for puppies to learn to navigate different social encounters. Safety is important - it's the job of the humans to monitor when things become too much and keep an eye on those big clobber paws. Taking regular breaks and switching to calm activities like treat searches helps these young friends to regulate their excitement. Aren't they gorgeous?
One spot left! The next round of puppy classes start next Wednesday at 6pm in Daylesford. Over four weeks we'll explore ways to create happy and well adjusted canine companions while building on practical skills you can use for life 🧡🐶 Find out more here ➡️ https://www.alldogsaregood.com/puppyclasses
My final puppy classes of the year begin on Thursday 4 November in Daylesford! Bringing a puppy into your life can be a rollercoaster of emotions and expectations. Puppies have an enormous capacity to learn and become wonderful adult dogs, provided we support them during this period of rapid development. During this 5 week course you will discover key information about puppy raising as well as practical life skills. Classes are kept small to ensure you get lots of one-on-one coaching and that the puppies can socialise without becoming overwhelmed. Would be great to see you there! https://www.alldogsaregood.com/puppyclasses
UPDATE: COURSE FULL There's one place left for the next puppy course starting Thursday 30 September in Daylesford. I can't wait to get to know a new bunch of humans and puppies as we navigate the essential puppy stage over 5 weeks. The first week is online and brimming with essential theory and the remaining in person weeks will involve building skills and gaining a better understanding of what puppies are communicating - to each other and to us. Also, you get to hang out with puppies. Need I say more? 😁🐶 Link in bio to secure your spot! https://www.alldogsaregood.com/puppyclasses
Someone asked me recently when their puppy would no longer need regular items to chew. The answer? Never! Adult dogs also need solid chewing time - this is natural canine behaviour which helps to maintain healthy teeth and gums, relieve boredom and reduce stress and anxiety. Toys rarely cut it. Natural animal based products which dogs can really spend time on are best. If you find it gross, your dog probably loves it 😉. Does your dog have a go-to favourite?
Loose lead walking can be a frustrating thing to teach, especially with young teenage dogs. I think it's why many people resort to harsh equipment when they feel they aren't getting anywhere. With perseverance, patience and by setting the dog up for success, it can be done, no yanking, choking or anti-pull devices required 🐕🦺 Pulling also gives you information about a dog's emotional state. Zelda only starts pulling when she becomes overstimulated by everything around her. Rather than this being 'bad' behaviour that needs correcting, I consider it a useful prompt to go right back to basics - finding calm and quiet areas to just slow things down and let her relax 🌳 As a herding dog she is very sensitive to small changes in the environment (very handy when rounding up sheep) so adding too much pressure can stress her out. You can see here she is carefully processing and I am working hard to keep my mouth shut! 🤫
I'm very excited to be running puppy classes in Daylesford at a gorgeous new venue! Thoughtfully planned puppy classes can be a great opportunity for youngsters. Having run classes for several years in London, Melbourne and now regional Victoria, my focus is on puppies and their humans having positive experiences, lots of fun and learning useful life skills. Bookings are now open - classes starting 5 August. www.alldogsaregood.com/puppyclasses
