One way to test our furry friends for dehydration is using the ‘skin turgor test’, which is to gently pinch and lift the skin between your dog or cat’s shoulder blades and then release it – if they are well hydrated, the skin will quickly return to its normal position but in a dehydrated animal, it will remain ‘tented’.

Myth 1: "Dogs don't need sunscreen."
Fact: Dogs can indeed suffer from sunburn and skin damage due to excessive sun exposure, especially those with light-coloured fur, short hair, or exposed skin areas like the nose and ears. Using natural, pet-safe sunscreen on vulnerable areas can help protect your dog from harmful UV rays.

Myth 2: "Dogs don't get skin allergies."
Fact: Dogs can absolutely develop skin allergies caused by various factors, including environmental allergens like pollen, plants and dust mites, food allergies, and certain shampoos or fabrics. Skin allergies can result in itching, rashes, and other skin problems, which may require veterinary attention and management.

Myth 3: "Dry, flaky skin is normal for dogs."
Fact: While some dogs may have naturally drier skin than others, consistently dry, flaky, or irritated skin can indicate underlying issues, such as allergies, nutritional deficiencies, or skin conditions like dermatitis. Addressing the root cause and providing appropriate skin care can help improve your dog's skin health - your vet is always your best source of advice.

For more information please contact us directly.

Mange can affect lots of mammal species but our beautiful common wombat is one of the most affected species. This is partly because wombats are burrowing animals and burrows provide good conditions for mites to survive and to spread between wombats.

How can you help?
If you live in TAS, you can help by reporting siting's of wombats on (03) 6165 4305.

HOW DO WE HELP THE VERY ALLERGIC DOGS?

Importantly histamine is accumulative - we don’t have to avoid all the allergens all the time-just enough to bring histamine levels down to below symptom activation point

To help bring total serum histamine down to below symptom activation level for a dog please consider:
1/ Building a large meshed roofed enclosure in the backyard ( size of a carport) and line the outside and roof with pollen insect screen ( rolls available from Mitre10)
2/ Use dust mite sprays and covers on any bedding ( Bosistos eucalypt spray and laundry detergent available from Coles)
3/ Patch test bedding ( tape on skin ) for 4 days looking for irritation -confirming a Type 4 contact allergen found in bedding dyes, formaldehyde, rubber edging etc)
4/ Good Type 1 IGE allergy testing, apart from identifying the main allergens, can also identify grasses your dog is not allergic to for inside the enclosure

These measures can bring total histamine levels down to BELOW SYMPTOM ACTIVATION LEVEL allowing room for other allergen exposure histamine when out of enclosure on walks etc to be unremarkable

Below is a human Eczema/ Dermatitis Histamine ‘Glass’ Treatment summary chart which articulates this method well
