WILDLIFE SA INCORPORATED We rescue sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. Educate the public about native wildlife. We also rescue abandoned, displaced and orphaned introduced animals.

At WILDLIFE SA our mission is rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured and orphaned Native Wildlife, and where possible returning them back to their homes in the wild. However, this is not always possible, and so we provide permanent homes either with ourselves, other wildlife carers or groups. We endeavour to educate the public in ways they can live in harmony with wildlife, such as providing

nest boxes for wildlife on your property, wildlife friendly gardens, wildlife friendly fencing, giving educational talks to groups and redirecting them to other organisations that may be able to provide a service that better suits their needs. We rely on the generosity of the publics for donations and successfully obtaining grants, but the majority of money spent is from our own pensions. To enable us to expand and continue our important work we set up our not for profit charity, WILDLIFE SA. By doing this it will allow us, not only to be able to help more animals ourselves, but to support other similar organisations and self-funded carers. But we need YOUR help! On average it costs around $1000 to raise a kangaroo joey, this does not include additional veterinary costs associated if the joey becomes ill or expenses incurred when it is an adult, such as fodder, vaccinations, enclosures or any unforseen medical expenses. Your generous donation will pay for essential items and services such as: Animal call outs, fuel, specific animal formulas, bedding/pouches, fruit and veg, dry feed, medical bills, aviaries and materials for building enclosures and compounds. We are desperately trying to raise funds for some specific projects: A wombat enclosure, an echidna enclosure and a raptor rehabilitation flight aviary. Ways that you can help us are:
DIRECT DEBIT - Weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or yearly donations sent to our Chairty bank Acc or a once of donation again can be deposited into our account or via paypal (some fees apply),
BEQUESTS,
VET BILLS - helping with veterinary costs (Greencross Vets Strathalbyn - 85362722 and Birdwood Vet - 85685220) (ring to check if we have accounts with other vets),
ANIMAL FOOD - (We have an account at Daish Fodder Store Murray Bridge - 85322711) hay, complete performer, stablemate, kangaroo pellets, kangaroo, possum, echidna and wombat milk formulas, lorikeet ad raising mix, high protien powder, insectivore powder, and seed
Atzes Pet Supplies - 85325822) fruit and veg, Gift cards (petrol and supemarkets)

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
Try to stay cool as it will be a hot one and take care out on the roads.
Don't forget to leave some water out for the wildlife.
From us all at WILDLIFE SA.

Don't forget to put containers of water out for wildlife, it could just save their life, but
also make sure to put either a branch that stick out of the edge of the container or a rock that sticks out of the water so they don't drown and can crawl out.

Sad update on our little Sparrowhawk chick.
When she first saw the vet they notice 2 little puncture wounds one near her nose and one under her wing and surmised that maybe she had been grabbed from the nest by another bird of prey, but then dropped for whatever reason. We were to keep an eye out for any signs of infection.
She had been doing well, standing up, eating and even show signs of normal defence when approached by us at feed times.
Monday when we went to give her, her last meal for the day she didn't really seem very enthusiastic about having it. Tuesday morning she seemed to have issues swallowing and then just refused to try any more. We made appointment at Monarto as we were concerned about Canker. By the time we got to the vet only a couple of hours later she had gotten worse.
Unfortunately she had an infection in her sinuses which is extremely difficult to treat because the pus is like a thick cheesy substance that is not easily drained. It is also not always easy to detect as there isn't the normal discharge you would get from the nose with a normal infection. Sadly given her age and her already compromised health the vet had to make the awful decision to euthanise her rather than letting her suffer with an unlikely good outcome. RIP little one

Busy day yesterday (Friday). Off to the vets with the Sparrowhawk then to Mount Barker vets to pick up another little female Ringtail possum, then closer to home to pick up an injured Rosella and finally back to Monarto to collect the Sparrowhawk and get one of our little kangaroo joeys looked at. The vet thinks he may have had some ligament damage when he was orphaned and scar tissue forming restricting movement in his leg. All we can do is physio and meds and wait and see and hope like mad he is going to be ok but the prognosis from the vet is guarded.

Didn't hold out much hope for this little one when it came in this morning. Eyes closed unable to hold its head up. Found on the ground next to a large gum tree in Mannum and severely heat stressed. But after a few feeds and some fluid. He/she is looking much much brighter.

We picked up an adult Rainbow lorikeet from the vet that can't fly but was x rayed and they cannot find any injuries to explain why so hoping it might just have some soft tissue damage or slight concussion that will heal over time. We are able to put it in an aviary to see if it can eventually fly. While we were collecting the Rainbow lorikeet they asked if we could also take a couple of chicks that were in someone's roof. 2 Adelaide Rosellas

Today whilst picking up the cockatiel from the Mount Barker vets we also picked up a little ringtail possum.
The little girl was seen by a member of the public on a smallish tree in their backyard yesterday with no parents in sight. She decided to wait and see if the parents would come back to the baby but a few hours later found her sitting curled up on the ground by her back door. She kept an eye out for any adults but couldn’t see any around and so she dropped it to the local vets.
She is to go back to the vets in a couple of days for a check up as they said she has a heart arrhythmia but unsure if it is from something like dehydration and may resolve itself or she maybe an unreleasable due to it being permanent.

Today we were asked to pick up a cockatiel that had been handed into the Mount Barker Vets. It is a presumed escapee. They have advertised it on their page but so far no one has claimed it, so we said we would take it and put it in an aviary and if it is not claimed in the next few weeks we have someone we know who has a couple of Cockatiels already who has offered to give it a permanent home.

And 1 more makes 3 Australian magpies in care. This juvenile made its presence known by walking straight into a display home and jumped up into the lap of the person showing the display home. They dropped the magpie into the Mount Barker vets who then asked us if we could take it.
Sadly it looks like this little one has been hand raised and then released by someone who is inexperienced in how territorial magpies are. She has been attacked by the local magpie population. As soon as she was bought home and as we opened the carry box she flew down to the floor where she saw a peice of dog kibble had been dropped and went and ate it. We caught her and put her back in the transport cage and decided to see if she would recognise man made food. As you can see in the video it absolutely knows what being hand fed is. The other giveaway is that she barks like a dog.
This morning at first light she scared the bejeezes out of me by making an alarm sound!

Hopefully in time after being paired up with the other 2 we have in care she will become less and less habituated and they can be soft released as a group.

Another magpie that has come into care was found on a hot day in the sidewalk covered in ants and dropped into the Mount Barker vets.
Thankfully he/she is doing well and will be paired up with the one we already have in care.

Every spring wildlife carers get birds coming in that although very well meaning members of the public who think they are doing the right thing when they find birds on the ground by rescuing them. Often the bird doesn’t need to be rescued, they are actually starting to fledge and will exit the nest and will stay low to the ground on a small bush etc for a couple of days before they start to fly. In this time they will flap, and fly to different levels on branches or other objects gaining muscle and strength.
When we get calls we try to get a photo of the bird and if we think it is just fledging we will get the caller to observe the bird from a distance for a while to see if the parents may be coming every few hours to feed.
This Australian Magpie was one such case and so the member of the public had been keeping an eye on it all day but did not observed any parents coming to the baby at all. As it was getting late they were also concerned as they have a number of feral cats hanging around. So we made a decision to bring the magpie into care. Well he/she like to keep us on our toes as he/she likes to sleep in odd positions. Whilst some birds such as magpies will sun bake by spreading out on the ground, this little one likes to lie at the bottom of the cage to sleep. This day we were about to change the paper in the bottom of the cage when Brian took a photo of him/her doing it’s typical I’m dead impersonation. I really wish he/she would stop doing that because it keeps lying in p**p and even though we change the paper several times a day it still manages to sleep where it has p**ped.
The other odd sleeping habit he/she has is to look like he/she is about to fall of the perch literally.
No matter what way it is sleeping when approached it wakes up as if to say yes can I help you or is there a reason you have woken me up??

One of our amazing supporters @
Joyz sent me a message a couple of days ago to say she had rung our water supply Adelaide Hills Bulk Spring Water and have generously paid for a load of water to be delivered to us. It couldn’t have come at a better time because just last week we ran out of water and once again had to use water from our fire water tank which is now only half full.
THANK YOU So Very Much Shirley your donation is so greatly appreciated. 🥰 🦅🐝🐢🦘🦉🦇🦆🐨🐞🦎

Todays prediction was 3-20mm of rain according to BOM
high chance of at least 3mm
medium chance of at least 10mm
Low chance of at least 20mm.
We have done some washing, cleaned the back window of the car as Brian has to go and get some hay.
Cleaned the gutters and pipe to the rain water tank, watering the garden now, but to no avail, the rain as usual is going either side of us again. Had some sprinkles that have not even registered with BOM.
Normally by this time of year Brian would have whipper snipped the grass 3-5 times by now but he has only done it once as it is soo dry out here. We have had watered carted in all through Winter.
Come on BOM get your act together and give us some proper rain instead of just getting our hopes up. Please and Thank You 🙏
