Ruth Hatten - Sahaja Animal Healing Holistic Animal Care Mentor. Naturopathy, Nutrition, Plant Medicine, Energy & Spirituality. When I was 11, I made the decision to stop eating my friends.

As anyone who knows me will tell you, my number one passion in life is animals. If I could surround myself with animals and just be with them, forsaking all others (well, most others - I'd keep a handful of my closest people nearby) I would be like a pig in mud.

I have loved animals since I was a little girl. Growing up with cats and dogs helped to instill in me a great love for our furry frie

nds. I became vegetarian. 16 years later, I took the big step of going 100% plant based, forsaking all animal products. As an animal lover, it seems nonsensical to eat them. How can I love one and eat another?

Through the journey that is my present life, I have moulded an existence that capitilises on skills and experiences I have gathered along the way to help animals.

* I use my knowledge of plant-based living to mentor others in their exploration of this lifestyle. This is done through my business .

* I use my qualifications as a lawyer and experience in practising animal law to assist with legislative change, policy improvements and education. This is done through my collaboration with a number of organisations including Voiceless, The Animal Law Institute, the Centre for Compassionate Conservation and the Australian Animal Protection Law Journal. I am often called on to speak at animal rights rallies and events. You can find out more at https://www.ruthhatten.com/advocacy and https://www.ruthhatten.com/news.

* I use my qualifications as an animal nutritionist and massage therapist to directly assist cats and dogs with natural remedies for disease prevention and achieving optimum health. This is done through my business Sahaja Animal Healing.

Overall, it's all about the animals for me. To continue the fight for animals takes dedication, compassion and an overall abundance of love for each and every one of them. I couldn't do this without a solid support network of friends, family and most of all my cherished darlings whom I share every day with - cats Lilly, Max, Elvy and rescue greyhound, Louie.

If you're drawn to working with me, or even if you just want to chat, I'd love to hear from you. Always for the Animals,
Ruth xx

Today’s reel is a birthday blessing for my beloved Elvy and a love-note to every cat who chooses to share life with us ✨

In this excerpt from my conversation with Bethany Swiggs on The Natural Animal podcast, we explore the wonder and mystery of cats:

“Cats vibrate at a very high frequency. They’re the protectors of your spirit world. Dogs are the protector of your materialistic world.”

From there we wander into why some people are drawn to dogs while others feel called to cats — how those preferences often mirror our own needs for independence, connection, or caretaking.

We also unpack the myth of the “solitary cat.” Yes, cats value space, but they are deeply communal. My own three — Max, Elvy, and Matilda — move like a small, fluid tribe: sometimes together, sometimes apart. Felines form family groups in the wild and at home; they don’t need us, yet when there’s resonance they love having us in their circle.

Alongside the beauty and challenges of cat rescue, this episode celebrates the magic of sharing life with a feline companion — the slow unfolding of trust, the lessons in presence, the unseen protection they offer.

💚 Whether you share your days with cats or simply admire them from afar, may this conversation remind you of their wisdom, their community, and the incomparable gift of their love.

In the latest The Natural Animal episode, my guest Bethany shares a statistic that stops you in your tracks: one un-desexed female cat can, in theory, lead to up to half a million kittens in seven years.

That number comes from a widely cited projection — and while nature rarely follows the math exactly (kittens face illness, predation, and other risks), the potential for explosive growth is real.

Whether the actual figure ends up in the hundreds or the thousands, the impact on rescues is the same: unchecked breeding creates a population surge that no shelter system can keep up with, making desexing essential to breaking the cycle.

That single number explains so much about why rescues are constantly under pressure.

Every kitten born means more food, more vet work, more foster care… and most rescues are already running on the smell of an oily rag.

Bethany talked about how many groups end up paying costs out of their own wages — an impossible cycle that leads to burnout and, too often, closures.

We also waded into the desexing debate itself — a question I’m asked all the time in my own work: Should I desex? When is the right time?

Bethany shares why desexing is so critical for animal welfare, and we explore how individual choices ripple out to affect entire communities of cats and dogs.

🎧 We unpack all of this in our conversation on The Natural Animal — the financial and emotional realities of rescue, the misconceptions about cats, and the small actions that can make a huge difference. 🐾 Why Artificial Grass Isn’t Pet Friendly

Artificial grass might look neat and low-maintenance, but it can be harmful to dogs, cats, and other animals.

🌡️ Extreme heat
Artificial grass can reach dangerously high temperatures in the sun - far hotter than natural grass - risking burnt paw pads and heat stress.

☣️ Chemical exposure
Most artificial grass is made from plastics and rubber infill that can release toxins such as VOCs, heavy metals, and microplastics. Pets walking, licking paws, or rolling on it can ingest these residues.

🚫 No natural filtration
Real grass and soil help break down urine and support healthy microbes. Synthetic turf traps waste, encouraging bacterial growth and strong odours.

🪱 Reduced ecosystem health
Artificial lawns eliminate soil life and the cooling, grounding benefits of living earth - important for pets’ senses and overall wellbeing.

💚 Better alternatives
• Native ground covers or hardy real grass varieties
• Mulch or natural stone paths with shaded areas
• Low-tox lawn care practices

Creating a safe, natural environment keeps paws cool, hearts happy, bodies healthy and the earth thriving - for you and your animals. 🌿✨

Do you ever feel like you have to do all the things to help your animal feel better? Change their food, add in every supplement you’ve read about, try herbs, address the skin, soothe the gut, support their emotions… it can feel endless.

I had a consult last week with a sweet little Bordoodle who reminded me just how common this is. She’s had gut troubles since puppyhood, skin issues, anxiety — the whole picture. It would be easy to want to throw everything in at once. But instead, we mapped out a phased plan: start with the gut, then move into elimination, then probiotics, then skin and emotional support.

And honestly, it was this case that inspired me to refresh my signature programs. Because healing isn’t about trying to fix it all in one go. It’s about creating a clear, structured path that feels doable for you and deeply supportive for your animal.

In this new episode, I share her story, what I learned, and why I’ve refined and refreshed my Holistic Wellbeing programs to reflect this gentle, step-by-step way forward.

I also share a more personal story — the dramas I’ve been having trying to source and build a new cat enclosure. For all the cat parents out there, you’ll know how important safe outdoor spaces are for enrichment and happiness. It’s been a bit of a journey, but I can’t wait to create a space my cats will love.

I used to push myself to always “show up” — socials, podcasts, newsletters, the lot. I thought slowing down would look like weakness, laziness, or worse: like letting people down 😩

But lately life has reminded me otherwise. Between a sacroiliitis flare up, the waves of perimenopause, and the sheer weight of life, I’ve felt exhausted. Some days, all I wanted to do was curl up and rest.

In the past, I would have pushed through. Instead, I pared back. Newsletters went unwritten, podcasts unrecorded, and socials went quieter. And in that stillness, I realised something: showing up with less can sometimes be more honest, more sustainable, and ultimately, more helpful.

Our animals know this innately. They don’t demand productivity. They meet us as we are — tired, reflective, or vibrant. They remind us that being is just as sacred as doing.

Is it really safe to give your pet a remedy made with alcohol?

Most people don’t think twice about the alcohol in herbal tinctures 🥃🌿
It’s seen as traditional. Effective. Normal.
Heck, maybe you didn’t even know it was in your pet’s herbal remedy.

But the type of alcohol used — ethanol (C₂H₅OH / C2H6O) — is a very strong solvent.
So strong, in fact, it’s also used in fuel blends to help petrol combust more efficiently.

Of course, herbal preparations use food-grade or pharmaceutical-grade ethanol — not fuel-grade ethanol with additives like methanol — but chemically, it’s the same molecule. And that matters.

I don’t share this to sensationalise — but to help you pause.

Because when we’re supporting animals who are unwell, sensitive, or already carrying a toxic burden, I believe we need to choose remedies that are as gentle and aligned with their nature as possible 🫶🏼

That’s why I’ve written a new Substack article exploring this in depth.
👉🏼 In the piece, I share:
• A brief history of alcohol use in herbal medicine — and why it’s so commonplace
• What ethanol actually is, and where it comes from
• Why I don’t use ethanol in any of my preparations for animals
• The energetic frequency of alcohol
• Safer, effective alternatives for gentle herbal extraction
• My perspective on what animals truly need when it comes to healing

This isn’t about fear.
It’s about awareness, empowerment, and rethinking what’s considered “normal” in natural medicine — especially for those who can’t speak for themselves.

🎧 I’ll be recording a short podcast episode on this next week. If you have thoughts, questions, or stories to share, drop them here, in my DMs, or on Substack — I’d love to include them in the conversation.

Sometimes we carry more than we realise.

Grief that isn’t ours. Worry that lingers. Energy that settles in the quiet corners of our bodies.

During a recent healing journey, I came face to face with the depth of what I’d been holding. From clients, from animals, from my own losses.

This is the part of my work I don’t often share. The invisible weight. The moments where I forget to tend to my own field as deeply as I tend to others.

But I’m returning now. Gently. With devotion. And with gratitude for the animal guides (including Lilly, Elvy and Matilda) who provided protection and reminded me to breathe and to soften.

If you’re on this path, if your animal is unwell or you’re grieving one who’s passed, I see you. This post is for you💧

✨ How are you tending to your energy lately?

Is your pet feeling stressed or anxious in times of change? 😿 With the arrival of Miss Matilda this week, I’ve been reflecting on how nervous energy affects pets and humans alike, and the importance of creating calm spaces for everyone🧘‍♀️

I’m diving into this (and how it’s helping our pets adjust) in my latest Substack post. From flower essences to calming rituals, find out how we’re fostering peace for both humans and animals at home 🌸🕊️🐈

I’m happy to report that the cats are adapting well 👏🏼 With each day, the boys are spending more time out of the bedroom, which means greater access to the little one. There is still hissing when Matilda oversteps boundaries. This is her biggest lesson at the moment!

The next phase for Miss M will be detox, as she’s been exposed to processed food, vaccines, parasite meds and desexing. If you’re looking to make your home a low-tox haven for your pets, don’t miss my Low Tox Pets Handbook for easy tips on reducing their toxic load and implementing gentle detox protocols!

When we talk about creating a low tox life for our pets, it's easy to think first about the things we remove — like chemicals in cleaning products or synthetic flea treatments.

But true low tox living isn’t just about cutting toxins out.
It’s about what we put in too.

And diet is one of the biggest, most important factors.

The food our animals eat every day either supports their health — or slowly contributes to toxic load, inflammation, and chronic disease. Highly processed foods, synthetic additives, preservatives, and poor-quality ingredients all create stress on the body. Over time, they add up.

💥 Real food is essential 💥
It supports the gut, the liver, the immune system — all the systems responsible for processing and eliminating toxins.
It builds resilience from the inside out.
It lays the foundation for true, lasting wellness.

That's why, when you enrol in Low Tox Pets by Monday 5 May 2025, you'll receive a very special bonus:
🎁 Your choice of my Real Food Diet for Dogs or Real Food Diet for Cats eBook — yours free (normally $49).

Inside, you'll learn the principles of species-appropriate feeding, how to nourish your animal naturally, and why real food is such an essential part of reducing toxic load — and supporting a longer, healthier life.

✨ Caring for our companion animals should never be about perfection or overwhelm.
It’s about making informed choices, one powerful step at a time — and real food is one of the most important steps you can take.

👉 Enrolments are open now — ruthhatten.com/low-tox-pets!
🗓 Early Bird Bonus available until Monday 5 May.

Your pet’s low tox journey starts here — and it starts with what’s in their bowl 🐾

My Story

Hi, I'm Ruth Hatten, animal naturopath, healer and plant based coach. I specialise in the health and wellbeing of animals. My ultimate goal in life is to make a difference for all animals, giving them a healthier, happier and longer life.

One way that I help animals is by helping people like you help your furry companions achieve optimum wellness through nutritional therapy and massage therapy. The result is a happier and healthier cat or dog and a happier you.

If your furry companion is suffering from disease, I can assist them in the healing process by stimulating their natural inherent ability to heal. I do this using natural healing modalities, like nutritional therapy and massage therapy. My approach complements conventional veterinary treatment and provides natural alternatives that don't result in adverse side effects.

If your furry companion appears healthy, I can help you ensure that he or she stays that way, naturally, through helping you feed your fur baby a species appropriate diet.
