WOLFIE NEEDS YOUR HELP!
5 years ago, the incredible Mark and Kat adopted Wolfie, a very special foster dog of mine. He instantly became so loved in their family!

Unfortunately, they have just received the heartbreaking news that Wolfie has been diagnosed with cancer.

His radiation therapy will cost $14,000!

Please, any amount you can spare, no matter how small will help Wolfie receive the treatment he needs to live his best life. His early years were far from pleasant, and he deserves a chance to enjoy the happy life he was found!

Please donate and share! Every bit counts for this beautiful boy!

Thank you ABC Dogs NZ for again another wonderful graphic and information. We were just discussing play in our Puppy Class this morning!

Play is so easily misunderstood.
Is it really play that you are watching ❓
I am all for letting dogs communicate with each other, though some dogs simply don't have the ability to know when to stop or when their style of play is just unwanted.
The dog that is being held back and is bursting with energy, straining and screeching on the lead because it really wants to play with yours....is not the dog to choose if you want to introduce your dog to healthy dog/dog play.
Over aroused/hyper dogs will usually run at other dogs full sp*ed and insist on interactions.
They are incapable of watching the cues dogs can give.
They want what they want and they want it NOW !

Then you have the pesterers, they just insist on interactions even after being told no by another dog.
These dogs can easily cause some very big issues.
Some dogs "play" by insisting it is on their terms and they will certainly bully other dogs.
Be careful who you choose to pair your dog with.

Once they understand the basics of play and have some understanding of social interactions you can slowly expand who they may want to play with.
It can be good for dogs to play with other dogs with different play styles, it helps both dogs.....BUT match the energy and play styles first so they get a true understanding of HOW to play (and it doesn't come natural to many dogs).
Keep the interactions shorter rather than longer.
Smaller plays often allow dogs to read each other better.
As always dogs do NOT need to play with others they have just met but some dogs really are truly dog social.....this is just a few hints to keep it that way.

A great Blog by Dr Jen regarding crates. Please read!

Dog crates can be a wonderful management tool, a safe retreat, and a place of comfort. However, increasingly, crates are being used as a shortcut; to avoid training, instead of being a step along the way; to confine, rather than treat underlying problems. So, let's talk about crates and the ways in....

When adopting a new dog, always remember to slow everything down!!
13/03/2024

When adopting a new dog, always remember to slow everything down!!

Too much too soon WILL cause issues.
It is a really common occurrence with newly adopted dogs.

Congratulations on your new dog.
I know you want to take them to the beach, the pet store and your café....however can I ask for a few minutes so I can explain just what your dog has gone through.....and why you need to take the next few weeks SLOW.
Your new dog has had it's whole world turned upside down.
They don't know you.
They don't know if they can trust you.
They don't know if they are with you for an hour or forever.
They may have been in various scary places.
Other houses, rescues, the pound and likely ALL of these in the past few days or weeks.
Your dog has stress hormones surging through their brain, they are STRESSED....they need to decompress, they need STABILITY in their environment and from you.
They need time with you and their new environment.
They need to know that the tree outside may rustle against the house and that's OK.
They need to know that those normal creaky noises in your house are OK and that at 3.45 the neighbours bang their door shut.
They need to know when it rains that tapping sound is OK.
They need to know that when the door opens they won't be moved somewhere else again.
They need to trust that YOU are safe even when you have had a bad day, you will still give them food and that they can close their eyes around you.
You know what your good intentions are with your new dog, your dog however has NO idea what is happening.....only that everything has changed and it is scary.
They do NOT need other new environments yet. Take it SLOW.
Dogs that have just been adopted need TIME. There is no need to rush out the next day and take them to all the places you want to go with them.....They need the opposite.
Let them decompress, let them inspect a new area of your house or yard every day or two. Walk them up and down outside your house for a few days (and only there), let them sniff, and sniff some more. Let them p*e freely.....it may be boring for you, but not for your dog. They need to know what is happening around them and they learn that through their nose, eyes and ears.
They NEED this.
They need to learn to TRUST you.
The long walks can wait, the café will still be there in a few weeks and you can visit the pet shop alone until they are ready.
Your bond together is the MOST important thing to concentrate on right now.
You will never regret taking it slow and it can save your dog and yourself from making the very same mistakes that can lead to people rehoming in the first place.
All the very best with your new dog.

IMPORTANT REMINDER
Keep Your Animals Safe in the Heat!

Today we registered at 42 degrees celsius here at Dogaholics Central!

As I looked out the window, I saw a person jogging with their dog (in 42 degree heat!)

With the temperatures rising, it's crucial to remember the well-being of our animals!

As much as we enjoy our outdoor activities, it's essential to make sure we don't exercise them in the heat and that we keep them cool and comfortable, especially during hot weather.

PLEASE! Avoid Walking or Running Your Dog in the Heat

Dogs can easily overheat when exercising in high temperatures, putting them at risk of heatstroke and dehydration. Additionally, asphalt and concrete can quickly become scorching hot under the sun, leading to discomfort and potential burns on your dog's sensitive paw pads.

Instead of hitting the pavement during the hottest parts of the day, consider these alternatives to keep your pup active and happy:

1. Take leisurely walks in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

2. Enjoy refreshing indoor activities, such as Nosework in the air-con.

3. Provide plenty of fresh water for your animals and keep your dog inside in the air-con where it is cool.

Remember, if it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for your dog!

Let's prioritise their safety and well-being during these warm summer days.

Fireworks Alert: A New Year's Eve Reminder for Our Furry Friends!

As we ring in the New Year with dazzling fireworks, let's not forget our four-legged companions. Fireworks can be stressful for our animals, so here are some tips to make the celebration safer and more comfortable for them:

1. Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy, quiet retreat where your dog and/or cat can seek refuge from the noise.

2. Stay Indoors: Keep your pets indoors during the fireworks display to minimise anxiety and from them escaping.

3️. Background Noise: Play calming music or white noise to help drown out the loud sounds.

4️. Comforting Presence: Offer your presence and comfort if your pet seeks reassurance.

5. ID Tags: Ensure your pet's identification tags are up-to-date in case of any unexpected escapes.

Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in ensuring a stress-free New Year's celebration for our furry friends.

Wishing you and your pets a safe and Happy New Year!
