Happy 4th birthday to this amazing doggo! 😍 Beau, there are so many things I love about you…
I love the way people get the biggest smile on their face when they see you;
I love the way you instantly decide if you really like someone and demonstrate this by shoving your head between their legs;
I love the way you greet us when we get home by doing 180 degree bum wiggles and bucking broncos (even if we’re only gone for 5 minutes);
I love the way you get so excited to go to the beach every single day, just like it’s your first time;
I love how uncomplicated you are… just a happy loving good boy, who keeps getting better with age;

In late 2021 we lost our dog Sonny to Hemangiosarcoma and our hearts were shattered. As a way to channel our grief, we had the idea to make a herbal tea to help people and their dogs cope with sadness and loss, and we could donate $10 from the sale of every jar of tea to cancer research, preferably using natural medicine.

So we set about developing “A Tea For Sonny” and trying to find someone to donate the money to, someone that aligns with our values. We contacted many integrative vets in Australia to find the best way to channel this money but kept getting caught up in bureaucracy… We finally got on board with a reputable veterinary organisation and a foundation was to be established to use the funds for integrative cancer research, treatment and care. Unfortunately, more than 12 months later we are still unable to get around the red tape involved in making this happen.

So we have decided that we can make a more immediate impact with this money by donating it to canine welfare groups closer to home. We have sold 70 jars of “A Tea For Sonny” since its inception so we are donating $700 to BARRC, who do an amazing job with animal rescue in the local area. Every year we will donate to a different organisation so please reach out to us with your favourite worthy cause!

Happy 1st birthday to this little lady! 🎉 And what a year it has been... Ciska, you have made us laugh and made us cry, but most importantly you have taught us more about dogs, ourselves and other people than we have ever learnt before. You're smart, cheeky, cuddly and a little bit crazy but we absolutely love you! 😍
Today's birthday burgers consist of:

Fireworks happening TONIGHT in Dunsborough which can be terrifying to many dogs so please keep your doggies safe!
* Please do not take your dog to the fireworks - they are extremely unlikely to enjoy it;
* Do not assume your backyard is "secure" - they will often do anything they can to escape and injure themselves in the process;
* Do not think that just because they have been OK in the past means they are going to be OK this time;
* Please give special consideration to pups and new rescue dogs as you do not know how they are going to react;
Some tips to help keep them calm include:
~ Have a safe space for them inside the house such as a crate, walk-in-robe or under a desk and put their favourite bedding and toys in there;
~ Close windows and curtains;
~ Play some calming music or have the TV on;
~ Diffuse calming essential oils (caution required when using oils);
~ Pop a “Thundershirt” on them;
~ Pheromones and herbal remedies such as Rest & Quiet may be helpful;
~ Be calm and treat your dog normally whilst the fireworks are happening.
Have fun with your dog today and wear them out! Swim, walk, run & play and do all their favourite things so they are happy and worn out tonight 😊❤️🐶

Hi! My name’s Ciska and I would like to tell you a bit about myself. Some people say that I have “behavioural problems” and that I’m a “difficult” dog… some have even said that “dogs like me” usually get put down…🥺 But you see, the thing is that I’m a sensitive, nervous girl and really just a big scaredy-cat, so I bark and lunge at things to make them go away. It’s not because anything bad has ever happened to me, it’s just my personality. I’m a Border Collie so I’m really really smart and I want to control how everything moves, just like I would if I had some sheep to look after. But people, dogs, cars and bikes just don’t go where I want them to, so I have to stare really hard at them and then jump at them and bark so that they will listen to me. I get so frustrated with them! People are the scariest, especially when they are looking right at me and then they try and talk to me and touch me… if they would just give me some space and time, then we can become friends. I actually really like most dogs, except they’ve usually got scary humans attached to them, so I have to bark at them too.
Mum & Dad used to take me to lots of places like the markets and the beach but they were just way too big and scary for me so I used to bark at things A LOT! People would look at us and sometimes they would shake their head and roll their eyes and that would make us all really upset. If I got into trouble for barking that would make it worse because I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. Nobody understood me!
But then Mum found some really nice people who are helping us, and she is always doing courses, reading books and watching videos to learn what’s best for me. She doesn’t really do anything else actually! 😆
So for the time being we’re doing lots of really fun and interesting things around home and now I’m starting to feel much more relaxed and confident. We do heaps of training every day, we play games and I can do so many tricks! Today we went for a big walk around our neighbourhood and I went for a swim in the dam and I didn’t get scared once! If I saw something I wasn’t sure of, I would just check in with Mum and I could see that she wasn’t scared and I knew she would look after me because she really loves me. It was so cool!
For 2024 Mum & Dad have started a “Jar of Wins”, so every time I do something really good they are going to write it on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. That keeps everyone focussed on the positive things, and by the end of the year the jar will be chockers and we can look back at all the wins and see how far I have come!
So next time you’re out and about and you see a dog “misbehaving”, please be kind, wish them well and think of me 💕
