Many cats develop anxiety around their carriers because they only see them when it's time for the dreaded veterinary visit—an experience that’s never enjoyable from their perspective. To help reduce this stress, make the carrier a familiar and comforting part of your cat’s home environment.

Leave the carrier out so it no longer signals an impending trip. If using a kennel-style carrier, remove the door, line the interior with a soft towel so it can function as a comfy hideaway and napping spot. Gradually build positive associations by placing tasty treats nearby. Over time, leave treats closer until your cat is comfortable finding them inside the carrier.

This approach helps your cat view the carrier as a safe, inviting space rather than a source of stress, which will hopefully make future veterinary visits easier for both of you.

As your cat ages, it’s important to observe physical changes, especially in how they move around the home.

Some changes, like weight loss, grooming habits, and eating patterns, are easy for most caretakers to notice. However, subtle shifts in mobility can be harder to detect.

Aging cats often develop arthritis, lose flexibility, and experience daily aches and pains. As a result, they may adjust how they play and navigate their environment.

For example, your cat may prefer to simply watch their toys rather than chase them. This is perfectly fine—they are still engaged and mentally stimulated. You might also notice them using stairs differently or struggling to jump onto or off high surfaces. This is because their joints may be sore, and they are trying to minimize discomfort.

Additionally, your cat may stretch less, use vertical scratchers less frequently, or have difficulty grooming their hind end and hips. These behaviors often indicate that certain movements are becoming painful.

Another key change to watch for is difficulty getting in or out of the litter box. If this happens, consider adjusting your setup to make it more senior-friendly.

If you notice any of these changes, consult your veterinarian. There are medications and supplements available to help keep your cat comfortable and happy in their senior years.

Earlier this week we advised pet owners who have microchips registered with HomeSafe ID that they should act immediately to register their pet with a new database.

Global Micro Animal Registry is offering free re-registration to affected pet owners - https://www.globalmicro.com.au/homesafe-re-registration/

It appears HomeSafe ID are closing their website, which means you, the ranger and vet will no longer have access to your pet's information if needed.

Further advice for impacted consumers:
🐶Review the certificate you received when your pet was first registered, as this will display the microchip registration number and which database they are registered in.
🐶 If you're unsure - search petaddress.com.au using the microchip number to check which database they are registered in.
🐱 If you're unable to find the certificate - visit your local vet, who will be able to scan your animal and provide you with the microchip number and advise you of the database holding those details.
🐱 If the pet is registered with HomeSafe ID or Pet Electronic Tags (P.E.T.S) Pty Ltd, the microchip will need to be registered again with a new registration service.
🐱 People with rescue pets are particularly encouraged to check who they are registered with.

✨ Important Information ✨

The microchip company Homesafe ID is going in to receivership and is no longer operational. This means their microchip records will not be managed or kept up to date.

We highly recommend all pet owners check their microchip details are up to date and which company they are registered to. You can check which company your pets microchip is registered to by going to the following website https://petaddress.com.au/ and searching using your pets microchip number.

If you are unsure what your pets microchip number is, you can come into Hilton Vet Hospital for a free microchip scan. We can also assist in looking up your microchip number to check the details and which company it is registered to.

If your pets microchip is registered with Homesafe ID, we recommend transferring the registration to an Australasian database such as the Australasian Animal Registry (AAR). This can be completed online at https://www.aar.org.au/pet-owners/change-of-ownership/ Please note there is a $15 transfer fee. If your pet was microchipped with us your pet will be already registered with the AAR.

It is important to keep your pets microchip details up to date in the event they ever go missing so they can be reunited with you as soon as possible.
