Recall training should be refreshed often to keep the skill sharp. But did you know there are many aspects of skill you could focus on within the training session? 🐶 Precision - Does this behaviour look how it’s supposed to? 🤩 Latency - Does the dog respond to the cue immediately? 🐶 Speed - Once the dog begins the behaviour how long does it take to complete it? 🤩 Distraction - Can the dog exhibit the behaviour is a variety of environments regardless of reasonable goings on around them? 🐶 Duration - Can the dog exhibit the behaviour for as long as needed? 🤩 Distance - Can the dog exhibit the behaviour away from their handler? I bet your dog probably knows how to sit and lie down right? They’re pretty standard. But, does your dog know how to stand on cue? Well what if I asked you to stand as still as a statue, with no additional arm flailing and no extra words. Now cue your dog. Sit, Down, Stand. What happens? Playing with training mechanics and testing to see what actually cues a behaviour can be really fun and extremely informative - especially if you can’t figure out why your dog is having trouble listening to you (hint: it’s not them it’s you 🤣❤️) Remember that learners learn what teachers teach! So does your cue mean what you think it means? Or is your dog guessing what you mean based off of other clues like your posture or arm flailing? Part 2! Communicating through body language 🐾 Last week we highlighted signals to observe in your dog which they may display if they want more space, or would like to change the “conversation”. It’s important to remember that when observing body language and stress signals we also need to evaluate the context in which they are given. In this video we see behaviours that may be labelled as displacement signals. However when we look at the entire situation at hand it’s clear these signals are not indicating discomfort or stress. Instead they show anticipation for the yummy treat that’s about to be given.🍔 Dogs orient to the point of reinforcement, as we see when Odin looks up towards the food showing the whites of his eyes. Odin also begins to salivate at the sight/smell of food and begins to lip lick in anticpation! 😋 It is so important to look out for communication signals from our dog but it is just as important to evaluate the context and environment in which they were given! 🌳 #bodylanguage #thewholepicture #itsahowlingsuccess
