Howling Success Dog Training is a Force Free Dog Training & Behaviour service - Northern Beaches.
Rescue Dogs are the heart of Howling Success Dog Training and Behaviour. All of our team members cut their teeth in the animal industry by working hands on in a No Kill Animal Rescue on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. In our combined 16 years and counting of work in Dog Rescue we all noted how many dogs were either surrendered or over looked for adoption due to behavioural issues. This is how the
team at Howling Success found their passion for canine behaviour and training. Contact us today to find out how we can help you:

Congratulations to our final Beginner Scent Class Graduates for 2024!
🐶 Bruno

These awesome dogs all sniffed their way to a Howling Success, showcasing incredible teamwork and determination with their humans.
Each dog brought something unique and wonderful to the class—Bruno’s steady focus, Piper’s boundless enthusiasm, Hunter’s keen problem-solving, and Primrose’s determination (you call that an inaccessible hide Jess? 🤪).
It’s been such a privilege to watch these beautiful dogs and their humans grow together. We couldn’t be prouder of how well every team did!
As we wrap up the year, we’re looking forward to our next Beginner Scent Class which kicks off on the 1st of February 2025, with just two spots left! If you’ve been thinking about starting your scent journey with us, now’s the time to secure your place.
For those who’ve already completed the beginner course, our Advanced Scent Classes also launch in February, offering new challenges and opportunities to level up your skills in a rolling enrolment class format.
Well here is a little blast from the past 😍❄️ Today Trainer Jess was chatting with a colleague about the major cultural shift that has happened in the dog training world in the last say 20years. How beautiful it is to see that now days relationship comes first over robotic obedience for so many pet guardians.
To think it was only about 6 or 7 years ago when Jess was at a fete doing the dog training entertainment and when she talked about giving dogs choices in training the MC laughed and looked at her like she had 3 heads 🫣🫠
Here’s a little repost from the archives with the beautiful ❄️🥰 there are definitely a few things we’ve edited in here to update since this was made in 2019 but the message rings true x
————————-
We all want our dog to be the best they can be. But one of the biggest road blocks to dog training success is having unrealistic expectations of your dog. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having big goals. Shoot for the stars! Just try to remember that your goals are not your dog’s goals.
⠀⠀
If you are having a lot of trouble with a particular behaviour, context or setting do a bit of thinking to see how you can improve your skills and become a more effective teacher for your dog. These days we know that the best teachers set their learners up for success.
⠀⠀
In my training plans, relationship always comes first 🥇
⠀⠀
Robotic obedience is not necessarily what I strive for unless there is a genuine need for it. Help your dog be the best that they can be by setting realistic expectations for their behaviour and regularly training in achievable ‘goldilocks’ style circumstances. Not too hard, not too easy, juuuuust right.
If your dog is struggling to get something right ask yourself: What is present in the environment that could be making this difficult them? How can I make this easier? Does my dog really know this behaviour as well as I think they do?
And before you get frustrated ask yourself…
Is there anything that I really, honestly do consistently 100% of the time?

Training is the gift of quality time, shared laughs, and unforgettable memories. This Christmas, give your loved one (and their best friend!) the experience of feeling like a Howling Success!
When it comes to training your dog, food is one of the most effective tools in your toolbox. But why is it so valuable?
Food is a primary reinforcer, meaning it’s something your dog already loves and is naturally motivated to work for. It allows you to:
🐾 Reinforce behaviours quickly and consistently.
🐾 Keep training fun and engaging for your dog.
🐾 Help your dog build positive associations with new experiences, people, and environments.
While food is a superstar in training, it’s not the only reinforcer. Toys, praise, play, and even life rewards (like being let off lead) are also fantastic motivators. However, food almost always wins for its ease of use and versatility.
Take Prime 100, for example. When we call it a “treat,” that’s really a misnomer. Prime 100 is a complete and balanced food, meaning it’s perfect for training sessions, stuffing in enrichment toys and beyond. Chop it in bite-sized portions, and pair it with a quality treat pouch for easy, high-value rewards wherever you go.
We recommend The Trainer’s Pouch—it’s a great! Use the code HOWLING at checkout for a discount 😉
Training is about strengthening the bond between you and your dog. Whether you’re using food, toys, or games, the goal is to create clear communication and help your dog feel like a Howling Success!
What’s your dog’s favourite reinforcer?

Feeling so proud to receive this wonderful feedback from Greg, the coordinator of the Northern Beaches Story Dogs reading program!
As an assessor for Story Dogs, Trainer Jess has the privilege of helping this fantastic organisation prepare dogs and handlers to support young readers in primary schools on the Northern Beaches. Story Dogs creates an encouraging space for kids to build reading confidence by sharing stories with a furry friend—and it’s so heartwarming to hear of the impact the dogs have on these little learners.
Thank you, Greg and Story Dogs, for the kind words and for trusting Howling Success Dog Training to support your important mission!

🌧 Rain or Shine, we’re on this Journey Together 🌊
Here’s Trainer Nathan’s Walk&Train Client Pumpkin enjoying a moment of calm by the beach. At Howling we think it’s good to remember that training is a journey and we travel through all kinds of “weather” together.
Some days are sunny, and everything feels easy. Other days, it might feel like it’s a bit of a rainy slog. We hope the stormy days are few and far between.
Like any journey, consistency, kindness and patience are key. But, no matter the weather, each session—whether training, enrichment, or just taking a quiet moment together—brings new opportunities to connect and grow.
How do you and your dog spend rainy days? 🌧 Share in the comments!

It is actually 🦇💩 crazy to us to even consider putting February Classes on our website in November 🤪 But, that is how popular our Beginner Scent Class has been!!
We are now fully booked for Scent Class for 2024 and due to the hounding 🐕 of the people on the wait list that missed out of the last term for this year - we decided to pop the next term on the website now.
For past beginner graduates go check the private Facebook group for news about the Advanced Classes for 2025 🥰
Thank you so much for the support in getting these classes happening! Aside from providing an outlet and space for anxious and reactive dogs to be themselves and have fun with their humans - One of the big goals I had for these class was that I have fun too.
After a decade of Professional Dog Training it can be easy to lose sight of why you started to do this job in the first place! I really have been having a blast with you all and the support for these lessons has been off the hook so just want to say a great big Howling THANK YOU!

🎃 Happy Howl-o-ween from Howling Success! 🎃
Halloween is meant to be spooky, but anxious or reactive dogs might not love the constant knocks, costumes, and strange sights at the door. Here are a few simple tricks to make tonight as stress-free as possible for your anxious dog:
🕸 Create a Cozy Retreat: Set up a safe, comfy space well away from the door where your dog can relax. Have a trusted human stay with them. Adding calming music, their favourite toys and a or loaded with their favourite food can help keep them happily occupied.
🕸 Skip the Front Door Drama: If you’d prefer not to have trick-or-treaters stopping by, put up a friendly sign letting them know your dog is having a “quiet night in” or “ghouls and goblins are too scary for our dog - please do not knock”.
🕸 Should You Dress Up Your Dog? Costumes can be cute, but not every dog loves dressing up - especially not if they’re already sensitive. If your dog is happily wagging their tail, moving freely, and showing relaxed body language, they’re likely comfortable in their outfit. But if you see any signs of discomfort at all—flattened ears, tense posture, avoiding you when you approach with the outfit or if they’re trying to shake or chew at the costume—please skip the outfit. Remember, their comfort comes first!
🕸 Advocate for Their Comfort: Halloween is about fun for everyone—even if that means a low-key night for your family. It’s perfectly ok to prioritise your dog’s needs!
Whether your dog loves a bit of action or prefers the quiet, wishing you and your whole family a safe, happy Halloween! 🐾👻

Recall training should be refreshed often to keep the skill sharp. But did you know there are many aspects of skill you could focus on within the training session?
🐶 Precision - Does this behaviour look how it’s supposed to?
🤩 Latency - Does the dog respond to the cue immediately?
🐶 Speed - Once the dog begins the behaviour how long does it take to complete it?
🤩 Distraction - Can the dog exhibit the behaviour is a variety of environments regardless of reasonable goings on around them?
🐶 Duration - Can the dog exhibit the behaviour for as long as needed?
🤩 Distance - Can the dog exhibit the behaviour away from their handler?
Today Jess & @odinsandstrom focused on SPEED 🏎️
One of the best ways to motivate Odin to increase his speed is hiding out of sight 😂 nothing gets Mr Sweet Potato moving faster or searching harder than an out of sight recall drill 😍 Our prediction is that this is due to all of the games of hide and seek we play as a family and the by product positive association that has been made with that behaviour #pavlovisalwaysonyourshoulder

I bet your dog probably knows how to sit and lie down right? They’re pretty standard. But, does your dog know how to stand on cue? Well what if I asked you to stand as still as a statue, with no additional arm flailing and no extra words. Now cue your dog. Sit, Down, Stand. What happens? Playing with training mechanics and testing to see what actually cues a behaviour can be really fun and extremely informative - especially if you can’t figure out why your dog is having trouble listening to you (hint: it’s not them it’s you 🤣❤️) Remember that learners learn what teachers teach! So does your cue mean what you think it means? Or is your dog guessing what you mean based off of other clues like your posture or arm flailing? If you want to clean up your criteria and cueing check out our group classes at @canine_kindergarten in #northnarrabeen
Posted with #repost @mk9🚨Let's Set Things Straight Quickly... Using force or harsh tools often comes when people are struggling to train with kinder methods like food and toys. You Agree???💁♂️But remember, the dog isn't broken! You don't need to change the training method to force.🤪Dogs aren't trainable when their issues are being caused by the underlying problems written on the balloon.🤯It's about addressing the root cause of your issue, the issue that will only create more for you as time goes on. It's the underlying issue that will keep you training and punishing your dog to behave, all while it's still there.🔨That's why you won't find qualified trainers relying on such tools.🌎We've learnt from world wide shared research about dogs, everything humans have discovered about dog and training is just 10% of what we can do to transform our dogs.📢If you're finding it tough and want to avoid forcing your dog into obedience, DON'T WORRY!All the knowledge we trainers use is available at mk9plus.com for you to watch and learn right now!LINK IN BIO!-----#ProngCollar #prong #halti #sliplead#dogharness #dogharnesses #LooseLeadWalking #DogTrainingTips #PuppyTrainingTips#PuppyTraining #PuppyTrainingAdvice#DogTrainingAdvice #DogWalk #DogWalking #balanceddogtraining #PositiveDogTraining
Part 2! Communicating through body language 🐾 Last week we highlighted signals to observe in your dog which they may display if they want more space, or would like to change the “conversation”. It’s important to remember that when observing body language and stress signals we also need to evaluate the context in which they are given. In this video we see behaviours that may be labelled as displacement signals. However when we look at the entire situation at hand it’s clear these signals are not indicating discomfort or stress. Instead they show anticipation for the yummy treat that’s about to be given.🍔 Dogs orient to the point of reinforcement, as we see when Odin looks up towards the food showing the whites of his eyes. Odin also begins to salivate at the sight/smell of food and begins to lip lick in anticpation! 😋 It is so important to look out for communication signals from our dog but it is just as important to evaluate the context and environment in which they were given! 🌳 #bodylanguage #thewholepicture #itsahowlingsuccess
🌟Holiday Warm up Session🌟 Ready to get back into training mode after a break or kickstart a refreshing walk?Engaging your dog in cues they enjoy can reignite their focus when out and about. 🌳Using simple cues to create fun games (like the “Touch Game”) ensures a successful warm-up session whilst allowing us to check in with our dog and stay below their excitement threshold 🤩Share your dog’s favourite cue below!🐾 #itsahowlingsuccess #newyearnewme

Our Story
Hi. I’m Jess, the founder of Sandstrom Dog Training.
Dogs have been our companions and friends for thousands of years, but never before have they had to conform to the environmental and social constraints of humans in the way they do now.
"I believe, by helping my clients create a deep relationship which goes beyond the basic dog/owner dynamic, the benefits are not only for the team I’m working with, but greatly reduces the risk of dogs being surrendered to shelters, or abandoned due to behaviour which may be labelled as ‘antisocial’."
I use science based, positive reinforcement techniques, allowing both person and dog the space to learn how to communicate with each other without the use of force, and allowing their relationship to flourish.
I credit my deepest learning about working with animals to the best teacher any person could have, my dog Snow. I was blessed to study under this sweet, wise and gentle soul for 6 years. She generously and selflessly showed me what possibilities lie in the age-old relationship between humans and dogs. While no longer with me, her wisdom shines with every client I have.
