⭐️GROOMING YOUR PUPPY🐾🪒✂️

Cooperate carefully is giving your puppy choice and control, and to be a willing participant.

PLEASE get your puppy used to being groomed the moment you get him home.

⭐️Sit him on your lap, with a pile of treats and feed him while you
gently brush him.
⭐️Play with his feet and toes, check his teeth and ears.
⭐️Do this daily, and he will learn to enjoy being groomed.
⭐️Bath him every 2-4 weeks, so he gets used to it. You can buy a
lick mat that sticks to the bath, smear with peanut butter and he
can lick that. Make it a nice experience.
⭐️Introduce a hair drier slowly, so as not to scare him, and only use
cool or warm air.
⭐️If you plan to use a groomer, then take your puppy at 12-14 weeks,
so they can meet the groomer, and have a quick groom.

If you are keen to do basic grooming yourself, our puppy book has a chapter on grooming with easy to follow instructions and photos.

NOTE Many groomers are refusing to take large dogs as they are so unruly and difficult to groom. If you teach your puppy the basics it will be a much nicer experience for your groomer and puppy. Goldens require regular brushing, and this will reduce their coat getting matted - don’t leave it for the groomer!

Also select your groomer carefully! We often hear of “accidents” from inexperienced groomers, where dogs get hurt. We have a list in our files.

Very good advice. Teach your children to be dog friendly.

TEACH A CHILD TO BE DOG FRIENDLY BEFORE TEACHING A DOG TO BE CHILD FRIENDLY
“How can I make my dog more child friendly?” The question really should be - “How can I make my child more dog friendly?” It makes far more sense to teach children how to behave around dogs before looking at teaching dogs how to behave around children.
Many dog bites could be avoided if children were shown how to treat dogs. Children often treat dogs like one of their toys - jumping on them, pulling them, poking, kissing and hugging or lying on top of them. Children can also be really loud – squealing, shouting or screaming, which often makes a dog feel stressed and anxious and may stimulate a prey drive in some breeds.
Children often like to show dogs love by hugging, kissing or leaning against them - this is a normal, human way of showing affection, but most dogs find this stressful and frightening. This normal human behaviour could easily lead to a dog bite, which is why it’s so important to always supervise young children around dogs. When a dog is feeling stressed or frightened and their attempt to communicate this through their body language is ignored or not understood, they may see no other option to make the scary situation go away than to snap or bite.
Teach children that dogs don’t like being hugged, kissed or sat on. Teach children that dogs like quiet, soft, calm voices and that shouting and screaming scares them. Teach them never to disturb dogs that are sleeping, eating or chewing something. Teach them that dogs are not toys and don’t like to be jumped on, pulled or pushed, chased or teased. Teach them to respect dogs as one sentient being to another
Dogs don’t come with a built-in ability to know how to interact with children and children don’t come with the ability to know how to treat dogs. It’s up to parents to teach their children this. If children were taught from a young age how to interact and respect a dog’s space there would be far fewer incidents of dog bites.
