WonderPaws Dog Training 1:1 Dog Training that's tailored to YOU and YOUR Dog 🐾 The thing about Dogs, is that they have their innate way of instantly getting into your heart.
(16)

Hello and Welcome to WonderPaws Dog Training

If you’re reading this - then you’re serious about training your dog – so thank you for clicking on WonderPaws! They give you those ‘puppy dog eyes’ – you go ‘awww... looook.... soooo cute’ and before you know it, they’re chewing your favourite shoes, running around the house with your bra, or pulling you across the road to meet another dog! If you hav

e a dream of owning a dog that listens 1st time, every time, then I can help you make that dream a reality. Imagine your dog walking nicely on a lead and completely ignoring that other dog. Or your dog doesn’t find your bra or your favourite pair of shoes exciting at all! How nice would that feel? What I can offer, is tailor made training to suit your specific needs. I will come to your home and train your dog. I will provide the equipment you’ll need. I’ll help you understand why dogs do what they do, and give you simple and easy instructions to reach your dream. You’ll be amazed by the difference in the 1st session. Now you know what I can do for you, let me introduce myself......

My name is Jools, and I’m a Nationally Qualified Dog Trainer (NDTF) I grew up in Birmingham (UK), Keir (my husband) is from Manchester (And no! He doesn’t know Liam or Noel Gallagher from Oasis!). We’ve been together since 2003, and we emigrated to Melbourne in 2011. Like most people, I’ve always had dogs in my life, but I’ve naturally developed ‘a knack’ with training them (I‘m known as the Barbara Woodhouse of the family!)
I taught Socks (my Aunts dog) to collect the newspaper from the letterbox and drop it at her feet! With Foster, (the 1st dog I ever owned), I taught him to crawl under a blanket when he let one rip! Paddy (our current dog) knows how to spell the word DOG! Dogs are amazingly, loving animals, and once you’ve developed a concrete gateway of communication with them – they will do pretty much anything! Like us humans, we learn every day. Allow me to help you train your dog so they will do what you ask 1st time, every time.

When training place command always start with small incrememts and gradually build duration and distraction

"Hi Jools, would love to thank you for your time & I have to say I am amazed at how well Daisy is going you won't believe it but she has not barked when we have come through the front door which has been great. Can you tell me where I would get the crate from? Also would love to do the training you mentioned in October if we can, thank you once again!"

MESSAGE FROM TEAM LOKI 🫶
"Hey Jools! I wanted to share some photos of Loki on holidays and say thank you soooo much for helping us get to our goal! He is doing so well here especially being in a new place and I am so proud of him. Thank you so much again!"

If you want to change your dogs behaviour - you need to be committed to the training. Its never an overnight fix. Its never 'lets wave a magic wand and only give the dog cookies for good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour' 🙄

The work - works!

Put in the work and you WILL achieve your goals

Team Loki had 4 sessions with me

They went from strength to strength and I'm ridiculously proud of their achievement to be able to take Loki in the car (and not be a menace) and take him on holiday (and him not be all over the place on walks)

Go Team Loki! Keep up the awesome work 🍾

Every interraction is met with SO.MUCH.ENERGY
ITS.A.100.MILES.AN.HOUR
Even when taking food from the hand - he takes it with gusto!
He REALLY struggles to regulate his emotions which can be dangerous for the humans in his life and the little people in his family who will come to visit
So the first thing we need to do is calm his farm!
This picture was taken after several sessions of place command - he finally managed to stay on place for a good minute or 2 - so this is a good sign we will make progress
Stay tuned as his program kicks off in a few weeks
I have every hope he'll be slowing his thinking down and making better decisions in time to come

STORM REMINDER

important reminder guys!
Tomorrow is forecast for some nasty storms! Please make sure your dogs are secured safely within the home!

If you have a storm fobic dog put them into a confined space, small room, crate or pen where they feel secure ( if you haven’t crate trained yet and have a storm fobic dog, would be an idea to get this training done!), medication can take the edge off, putting on a tv and music.

Remember not to coddle your dog during a storm!
If you have a dog who isn’t afraid of storms it would be the perfect time to make storms even more fun, do some food games, toy play and training! For dogs that will eat give them something like an antler, wood stick, bully stick, bones can be used to but make sure they are age appropriate ( size, type etc)

Ensure your dogs have tags on their collars with contact numbers!

We also use air tags on all of our dogs as a backup for location identification!

I was gifted flowers and lamb chops from my clients who own Winston 🫶
Now. You're probably wondering why Lamb Chops??🤣...
Let me explain....
One evening, I was wrapping up their session (setting their homework) while sat in their kitchen & having a giggle with my clients
All I could smell was the lamb shank cooking in the slow cooker 🤤
Maaaaaan I LUUURVE lamb. Its my favourite meat 🤩 So I made it VERY clear how much I love lamb and, how I was jealous they're having lamb shank for dinner & I joked I should stay for dinner 🤣🤣
Anyhoo.... at their final session last night I was presented with the beautiful bouquet of flowers.... followed by 2 x lamb chops 🩵🤣
I laughed so hard! I LOVED Team Winston! We had such a giggle in each session!
Moral of this post..... if you like to take the P and like to laugh at yourself, or have a giggle then we'll be a good match 👌🏻

Happy Hump Day or should I say Happy Lamb Chop Day 🤣🤣🤣

• If you think your dog has Separation Anxiety? I can help you identify if that is the case.
• If you need extra help but are time poor for a 2hr face-to-face session
• You are getting a puppy and need advice on home setup, crate or no crate, toilet pads or no toilet pads.
• You already have a puppy and want advice on toilet training & all kinds of puppy behavior.
• You have rescued a dog and need professional advice on the issues you are facing.
• Your location is further afield for you and me, or you are in another State or Country
• We can chat from the comfort of our own homes!
• I could go on, because the options are endless and that is why online consults are beneficial.

Whatever you need advice on, I am waiting to help you at the other end of the internet 😊

When a dog is anxious about something they behave in a way that works for them - in Brumby's case he sniffs the ground intensely trying hard to switch off from the busy road
So we got to work with building food drive, reward marker, games & some basic obedience skills inside the home like place command and sit
Brumby's owner has been phenomenal since day 1 of their Initial Session and session 1 of their Program
They've been SO committed with patience, consistency, and mindset that they've achieved the results you see in the last part of this video
We still have a way to go with Brumby but we're definitely on the right track
Stay tuned for more updates

Lets talk about recall training 🐾
Most people take their dog to the oval, unclip the leash and hope for the best..... 'hope' is not a good strategy when it comes to dogs.... if your dog runs off to something more interesting (Dogs. People. Kids. Etc) then they're less likely to come back to if you shout COME or FLUFFY; GET BACK HERE NOW!
To reach a good recall, we must practice LOTS and help our dogs associate the word we choose for a recall. In Katys video, her recall word is 'Here' (Tip.... you can choose any word you like! But be consistent)
She's doing an incredible job here, so we're now adding low level distractions (I am the distraction)
As she approaches me - her owner recalls (shouts HERE) and Katy turns on her heels to rush back 🌸
The other addition to a recall is making sure your dog is rewarded when they get back. They can be rewarded with a game (like Katy!) Or a few pieces of food, or a toy, or some attention, or ask for obedience AND you can mix it up and do all of these - the options are endless

What an incredible post 💪🏻

Its articulated in an incredible way👌🏻

My dog (Paddy) is the most docile dog you could wish to meet.

Those who have met him, have seen how d***y he can be.

He'll lean on you. Or anything in reach. Sometimes, he'll lean on a human and an object, at the same time 🙈

However, I will ALWAYS be aware that he has the potential to bite if he was pushed!

So I manage his interactions & I advocate for him when necessary!

Know your dog!
Learn their body language to identify stress signals!
Advocate for them, so they don't need to use their teeth!

There is nothing specific about any breed of dog that makes them ‘safe’ around children.

When I make videos breaking down the body language of dogs around kids, a lot of commenters have some very choice words for me.

Often commenters state the breed in the video is a ‘dangerous breed’ (though they don’t usually put it that nicely), or others will accuse me of demonising them, because ‘this’ breed is special, and they know this because they:
‘grew up with them’, ‘own one’, ‘have owned dozens’, ‘breed them’, or, ‘can speak with them telepathically’… you name it.

When it comes to breed specific behaviour & temperament there are of course some differences. Some breeds tend to be more aloof, others more social; some breeds can be prone to nipping if overly-excited, or have a higher potential for animal aggression, while others have soft mouths and are more chill and lazy.

Breed characteristics usually reflect selective breeding for purpose - whether for work, sport or as lap dogs. But no breed has been selectively bred to be human aggressive.

❗️Now here’s the important part…

No breed has been bred to ‘not feel emotion’, no breed has been bred to ‘never feel stress’, no breed has been bred to ‘use completely different body language to other dogs’…

No breed has been bred to ‘not be a dog’ and ALL dogs have the potential to bite.

Individual differences ‘within’ a breed can be huge. ALL dogs can develop aggression issues, either through weak genetics or from bad experiences. But not all aggression stems from a behavioral issue.

A DOG DOES NOT NEED TO HAVE A BEHAVIOR ISSUE TO BITE.

A dog may bite due to pain, fear, defense etc.

A DOG MAY ALSO BITE WHEN THEIR SUBTLE REQUESTS FOR SPACE HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY IGNORED.

And this often happens because people don’t recognize more subtle stress cues OR they think their breed/their dog ‘would never’ & misinterpret these communications as something else.

Some dogs may never escalate, but NO INDIVIDUAL DOG will ever ‘not’ escalate because of their breed alone.

What kind of dog owner are you? Are you a dumba$$?Do you ignore the rules?Whether that be signs on fences and reserves.....
02/08/2024

What kind of dog owner are you? Are you a dumba$$?

Do you ignore the rules?

Whether that be signs on fences and reserves..... or by seeing bandana's/ harnesses/ jackets on dogs?

I see far too many dogs that have developed reactivity, or become anxious because they were rushed-on by other dogs.

All due to selfish owners having their uncontrolled dog off-leash in an on-leash area!

Or, allowing their dog to approach another who is wearing some kind of bandana saying 'no dogs'

Or. Ignoring owners when they say:
'Please recall your dog'
'Don't let your dog approach'
'No. Your dog cannot say hi'

So if you're a sensible owner & respect other owners requests, or you follow the rules of signs - keep on being an incredible human 💪🏻

If you're not, you're a dumba$$

The world doesn't revolve around you 🙄

02/08/2024

If you and your dog aren't having fun training - something is going wrong

Now. Let me be clear. Sometimes its not all roses and rainbows.

Sometimes dogs will feel a little stress through training but it should be minimal to help them build resilience & come out the other side. And during that process they're not having fun. Sometimes, it takes them a while to recover. As long as the recovery time is getting quicker then things are going well.

But when they come out the other side of feeling stressed - the party starts!

Overall. Training SHOULD be Fun. Fun. Fun.

If your dog is being trained using surpression. Or is always being forced to do stuff. Things need to change!

As a Trainer, I never eliminate sniffing on a walk.... because thats not fair on the dog!

Afterall, a dog LOVES to sniff 😃

I build sniffing into the walk

Then its a win-win 💪🏻👌🏻

What you see in the video was achieved by some basic introduction to a structured walk inside the house for a few minutes

Then we moved outside to the drive way....

Then we gradually go further and further

With lots of sniffing in between 🤗

If you're told 'you don't need corrections to train a dog because you can train lions using force free or positive only methods'

Stop and REALLY think about it

The environments are completely different!

Read this post - its incredibly articulate 👌🏻

EDUCATION
EDUCATION
EDUCATION

is what trains dogs

Not brainwashing rubbish from 'others' that live in an idealogical world

I always find it bizarre it’s not obvious how illogical this is when the more extreme Force Free trainers use this as an argument against any type of aversive training method…

“If you can train Lions, Tigers (insert any dangerous wild animal you choose) to give blood, or do a multitude of behaviours with Positive Reinforcement alone, then we can do the same with our dogs”.

The thing about comparing training methods across different groups, is that it’s not just the training method & target behaviour that need to be the same, but the conditions the training takes place in also.
Otherwise, you can’t claim it’s only the training method that’s effective, because you haven’t controlled for numerous other variables that may be contributing to the effect.

Let’s list some of those confounding variables, shall we?:

- Captive wild animals live in a sterile environment with significantly less environmental enrichment than in the wild so the animals are likely to crave stimulation via training more.

- The trainer has complete control over the training environment, which in dog training we try to do also, but at some point we do need to train in real world environments where we have less control and there are more competing motivators (like prey animals to chase).

- Captive animals are ‘captive’. Trainers have bars/glass blocking the animal from them. No need to handle them. If they do need to directly access or handle them, guess what method they use? A dart gun. Not really a positive reinforcement method now is that.

There are numerous other factors that make this argument fall flat, but only so many characters on social media.

No one with any genuine love of animals wants to cause their dog unnecessary discomfort or stress, but, there are some scenarios where long term quality of life for a dog AND their owner may mean a short term aversive could mean higher quality of overall welfare (veterinary procedures aren’t all force free are they 🤷🏼‍♀️).

Dog Trainer

Hello and Welcome to WonderPaws Dog Training.

If you’re reading this - then you’re serious about training your dog – so thank you for clicking on WonderPaws!

The thing about Dogs, is that they have their innate way of instantly getting into your heart. They give you those ‘puppy dog eyes’ – you go ‘awww... looook.... soooo cute’ and before you know it, they’re chewing your favourite shoes, running around the house with your bra, or pulling you across the road to meet another dog!

If you have a dream of owning a dog that listens 1st time, every time, then I can help you make that dream a reality. Imagine your dog walking nicely on a lead and completely ignoring that other dog. Or your dog doesn’t find your bra or your favourite pair of shoes exciting at all! How nice would that feel?
