Living with a senior dog with incontinence - introducing Barry’s new playpen set up. Our 13 yo (foster) dog Barry is struggling with holding his pee. He is on heart medication that drains fluids and also has increased water intake. He also has a tiny bladder. All in all that means he will toilet a lot, very frequently. We use pee pads near the back door that allow him to toilet on the pads if he needs to go and we aren’t there to open the door. Doggy door is not an option mainly because we are renting. Barry sleeps in a crate at night but the accidents inside the crate increased. I also tried diapers/belly bands but the amount of pee just leaves them absolutely soaked for the night. I now changed the set up of his crate and added a toilet area. Bazza likes his crate, and leaving it in the spot where it usually is was important. I created more space by turning it sideways, moving the furniture around a little to fit the play pen panels. Play pen panels are attached with cable ties to the crate. A rubber mat is in there to protect the flooring and (reusable) a pee pad cover the toileting area outside the pen. We have more vet visits ahead to see if this is as good as it gets for him. His heart meds are pretty strong and while they keep the fluid out of his lungs, they also drain it from the rest of his body. We often get asked what play is ok and what’s not. The answer is ‘it depends’. Things we look for: 👍 is the play mutual 👍 is the play even in strength and energy 👍 are both dogs enjoying the play 👍 are there stops and gos and are both parties happy to re-engage 👍 is the play safe 👍 is there a time limit before it overheats Here is Suvee playing with our former @fetchingdogs foster Wattle. Wattle showed fear aggression towards other dogs when she was a puppy. Something we never saw but the rescued told us that it was quite severe. We saw fear behaviour but not aggression but that was also because we never put her in a situation where she felt the need to react aggressively. Now she is 3 years old and has a wonderful human dad. But over the years she became reactive to other dogs. Not surprising for us trainers and behaviourists. The behaviour was so deep seeded at such a young age, it would have been more surprising for it to not come out. When we fostered her, I almost adopted her but knowing the predictions of such behaviours at such young age, I decided the odds were too risky for what I needed in my next dog. Suvee and wattle play in the most beautiful way. They trust each other. Suvee can be full on at play when she finds the right partner… and Wattle plays along the lines. She offers her neck, submits, runs and chases. These two agreed on their roles in play. Wattle feels safe playing with Suvee. She knows she won’t get hurt, she also knows it stops when needed and both know that there are people who will step in if needed. Seeing dogs play is something wonderful and so beneficial for most dogs. The value of good play for anxious dogs is invaluable. So happy how far Bazza has come. I remember the days I would cry to my friends because things weren’t moving as fast as I wanted to. @canine.compass and @takealead you remember when you met Bazza first at our place and he would not settle for hours and hours upon arrival of visitors. Barking and being stressed. Putting him away he would bark, crating him he would bark, having him with us he would bark… he just could not deal with strangers in our house. I remember one night having my friend Alyssa stay over, and me being almost in tears not knowing what to do when Barry was just beside himself for hours. And my friend Alyssa from @canine.compass said, there is nothing you can do right now. You got to ride this through. No we have a maintenance person checking the AC. This video makes us extra happy. What doesn’t look much for some is huge for Archie. Archie was petrified of the tunnel. And generally, Agility didn’t hit his vibe in the first course. His mom persevered and they are now repeating the course. And Archie is getting the hang of it. Why bother you might think? Like pretty much most dog sports, they are something you do with your dog as a team. They challenge the team and they push limits for each team member. Challenges make you grow. Make the relationship grow. Archie is a rescue dog that didn’t have much of a relationship with people anyway before he got adopted by his now family. To say I am over the moon and super released is an understatement. This videos are from the @agilitydogclubnsw trial last Saturday. After over a month of injury rehab for Suvee (meniscus) and Benji (shoulder) this is our first run back. We had no training but lots of rehab and conditioning. Suvee ran beautifully. She qualified in JDX and came first. She is a very stable and consistent dog. With every run she gives her best. Second video is Benji’s JDM run. Currently he struggles with spread jumps. Something to work on but his form and jumping style otherwise was amazing. We didn’t qualify but I was over the moon that he is back to trialling again. I planned for our warm up to the Agility Nationals to be series of trials and lots of training but because of injuries that didn’t happen.
