🎃Halloween Dog Training🎃 Expecting trick or treaters? Practice training your dog(s) to hold a sit/stay while welcoming someone at your door. If you aren’t up to this level, make sure to put your dog in a safe spot in your home so they don’t scare your trick or treaters away with naughty behaviour! #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogtrainingtips #halloween #rewardbaseddogtraining #shutupandtrain

One of my favourite exercises to teach in Week 1 of puppy class @cammeray_vet is the tie up exercise. The Tie Up exercise is designed to teach the puppies to love and associate being tethered with a leash to their owners chair with going to sleep. We save it for the end of class after a lot of learning because we know the puppies will be ready for a nap. One of the best aspects of teaching your puppy to not mind being tethered? It’s a great way to manage your puppy’s behaviour at home. For example, tethering them close by to you while you are cooking in the kitchen keeps them from getting underfoot or trying to jump up for food from countertops.

👀Engagement/Eye Contact/Check In Training👀
This is the foundation skill required to train a super good walking on a lead behaviour. A dog that’s trained to “Check in” or engage with their owner despite what’s going on around them is a well trained dog.
This is not a cued behaviour. I’m not asking the dog to “Watch” or “Look”. This is an offered behaviour that’s been reinforced by the delivery of a reward. This means the dog doesn’t wait to be cued to check in. The dog will check in constantly in hopes of potentially getting rewarded.
As always, start to train this new skill in a quiet, distraction-free part of your home (this video was shot in my closet!) for 5 minute sessions. Aim for 10 successes in a row before moving to the next level of difficulty. Once all of the levels are completed in that room, change your training location to somewhere with a few more distractions such as a busy room in the house or backyard.

Hard to believe it’s been 1 year since we welcomed Peanut to our home. She’s come a long way!
Retrieval skills like the one I’m practicing with Pickle in this reel sometimes don’t start out looking like a retrieval at all. In this video I’m focusing on getting him to place the object (in this case his own bag of food treats) into my hands rather than in front of me. All of the initial work starts with the treats close to my hands. Overtime I’ll shape it out so he has to travel longer distances away carrying the object to successfully place it in my hands. This type of training is also called backward chaining - I’m training the final behaviour of a sequence first.
Go to your Mat training with Peanut ❤️
Did you know learning new skills is exhausting? The brain uses a huge amount of energy (glucose) compared to other organs in the body. The more mental tasks we set out to do with our puppies, the more they will need to rest and sleep to recover. Even a 5 min session to teach them how to sit or stay will set them for a great period of rest. So if you are trying to wear out an excitable and energetic puppy, skip the long walk and do some training instead. .....#puppytraining #puppyschool #puppytrainingtips #puppy #sleepypuppy #sleepingdog #cavoode #cavoodles #cavoodlepuppy #cavoodlegram #cavoodlesofsydney #puppyclass #puppyschool #braintraining #braintrainingfordogs
Eye Contact! It might not seem like much of a training video, but I was thrilled when Pickle held his eye contact in heel position as a dog ran right in front of us ❤️
🥜Peanut Update🥜
“She’s a different dog”
I’m so thrilled.
I learned today that peas in the pod are super high value on the reward scale for Peanut!
Day 6 of my Fitness challenge raising money for Biyani house
For anyone following my fundraiser for a Sydney women’s shelter, this was Day 3’s attempt with Goose the schnauzer.
Yesterday was day 2 of my fitness challenge to raise $ for Biyani House which is a women’s shelter in Sydney. Click this link for more info and to donate https://www.givenow.com.au/cr/pyfactivechallenge
Goose schnauzer and I completed a 20 min stair run challenge. She wasn’t happy about going up and down the same long set of steps so many times in a row and was a bit confused, so I tethered her half the way up and she happily stayed there while I did the rest.
