Don’t set the bar so high for your new puppy ;) Read this!

“Our old dog NEVER did that!”

This is a phrase frequently heard in home consultations, typically from owners of a pup that is hitting adolescence and testing boundaries. Often the dog before you is the physical reincarnation of the much-loved, greatly-missed pooch in the portrait on the wall.
However, to our rose-tinted memory, Fido the First never did anything wrong, while Fido the Second still has remnants of the decimated rosebush tangled in his coat.

There are 2 key factors at play here, generally working in tandem. The first is that no two dogs are alike – you are instantly doomed to failure trying to recreate the magic of the past. The other (and this is key) is the human brain is wired to minimise hardship when happy memories can take its place. This is why I start planning my next tattoo on the way home from my last and why younger siblings are able to exist. This is why we focus on training with positive reinforcement, rather than punishment: the positive memories last longer and sit forthright in our mind.

No puppy is without their difficulties. When you have raised a few puppies, as we have, you become better prepared for what is coming your way and more able to write off the challenges as simple steps in the journey. Ari (our Aussie pictured here) made Taylor (spaniel pictured here) feel like the devil reincarnated. But in hindsight, both dogs had their challenges during puppyhood and adolescence and both ended up as dogs we had only dreamed of having join us on this crazy life ride.

SOMETHING I WISH ALL DOG OWNERS WOULD DO.

Read your dog’s facial expressions and posture!

Every single day I see people putting their dogs in places where they clearly don’t want to be. My young daughters smile and wave at most dogs that pass us by when we’re out on walks. I am constantly astounded by how many of those dogs are then dragged over to us by their owners, despite it being clear (to me) that they are petrified of children.

There are obvious displays that everyone recognises, but here are a couple of more subtle things you should look for that are your dog saying “I’m not comfortable”:

- Sudden closing of the mouth and/or licking of the lips.
- Yawning (when they clearly shouldn’t be tired).
- Quickly looking for an exit route.
- Stiffening their overall body posture.

If you see your dog do any of these things when you’re trying to introduce them to a person or another dog PLEASE give them space or abandon the introduction all together.

This is such important info for all dog lovers. Give the muzzles space people! I don’t care how much you love dogs. They don’t necessarily love you back 😉

Why is Nelly in a muzzle? 😷

If you pay close attention to our social media you might recognise sweet Nelly from our walk&train program as well as the recent graduation pics from our group manners class.

Now, you may ask yourself - how is it that a dog who looked so stoked in her group manner class graduation pictures now needs to wear a muzzle???

Well basically - it’s not Nelly, it’s you 😅😂

Nelly is an absolutely gorgeous dog who just needs a little extra personal space when out walking. She has progressed so much that her trainer Abbey is now able to walk her in busy environments like Manly!

BUT - unfortunately much of the general population still think it’s ok to:
🙅‍♀️ Try to pat dogs they don’t know without asking the handler and then the dog.
🚫 Let their dog go up to any random dog in public spaces without asking.
🤦🏻 Walk their dog off leash in on leash areas.

So, for these reasons when walking Nelly in a busy area like Manly Beach we make sure to protect her personal space, feelings of safety and MAJOR training progress by utilising a muzzle, a give me space vest and a bright colour harness&leash set so you really can’t miss this dear girl and she projects LEAVE ME BE from every angle.

Remember that public spaces are there for everyone to use and enjoy 🥰 From the most confident to the extra cautious canines and everyone in between.

I just love this dog so much ❤️ Thank you for capturing us so beautifully.

Great advice from the RSPCA on keeping dogs safe and calm tonight during the fireworks.

Great advice from the RSPCA on keeping dogs safe and calm tonight during the fireworks.

It is important to keep our pets in mind when making plans for New Year’s Eve as many animals, especially dogs, can be startled by fireworks displays 😖

Dogs have very sensitive ears – they hear 10 times better than humans, so fireworks can be terrifyingly loud and stressful for them 👂

Ahead of any fireworks, make sure you have spent the time making sure your dog has had good exercise and enrichment. Take your dog out for a walk and give them a long-lasting chew to enjoy. A dog that has had opportunities to decompress may be less anxious during the night 😌

It's important to create a safe, calm environment for them during these stressful times. This will prevent them from hurting themselves or becoming lost in panic.

To ensure your furry friends stay safe this New Years Eve 👇

💫 Remove any objects at home that could cause injury to a panicking animal.
💫 Ensure your pet is microchipped and wearing an ID tag, so they can be easily returned if they escape.
💫 If you can, stay home to be with your pet and try to keep them secured indoors.
💫 Let your pet be with you – provide comfort but also remain calm and perform your normal activities.
💫 Leave on the TV or radio to mask the sound of the fireworks.
💫 If your dog has significant fear and anxiety associated with fireworks, speak to your veterinarian for assistance.

Please contact your local council for assistance if you come across a wandering pet, or if your own pet happens to go missing, it may be at their local animal care facility.

3 Sessions with this bird obsessed Cocker Spaniel has done wonders for his training! Woody spent most of his days chasing birds away from his backyard. He become too difficult to walk on leash and had no recall due to his obsession with birds. He also ignored the humans in his life when the opportunity to hunt birds was there making training him difficult. On our first session we trained him inside the house and locked the dog door as the temptation to run outside to check for birds was too distracting. We worked hard on rewarding him for learning basic engagement, loose lead walking and recall skills. By his third session we were able to work with him in the backyard and get some amazing focus and progress out of him. His owners can now walk him around the community without it feeling like it’s a chore and we are continuing to build a reliable recall from bird sounds and toy birds at home.
