Whether you're a vegan, vegetarian, herbivore, carnivore, pizzavore or omnomnomnomnivore.... We can all agree that this dogs condition is UNACCEPTABLE.

Battling malnutrition, tick infestation, anemia and parvo let alone abandonment is enough to kill even the strongest of dogs. So we are doing everything we can proactively to fundraise instead of just sitting back and expecting the public to donate!

๐Ÿต๏ธ LEST WE FORGET๐Ÿต๏ธ

When a black and white collie retriever was born on a farm in Shropshire in the late 1930s, it probably never occurred to his owners that he could become a hero.

Rob spent his early years with the Bayne family of Tetchill, after they bought him for five shillings soon after he was born.

He was their farm dog and pet before they volunteered him as a war dog in 1942 and he was signed up later that year.

Rob saw action in North Africa from September 1943 and became the first war dog to serve with the Special Air Service Regiment (SAS).

He was also on operations in Italy, parachuting in on sabotage missions.

On 3 February 1945, Rob's courage was recognised when he was awarded the Dickin Medal, seen as a Victoria Cross for animals.

The citation read: "For service including 20 parachute jumps while serving with infantry in North Africa and SAS Regiment in Italy."

He was also given the RSPCA Red Collar and Medallion for Valour as well as, according to reports, a lifetime supply of biscuits.

Rob was the only dog to be awarded both the Dickin Medal and the Red Collar, which were auctioned by militaria and medals specialist auctioneers Noonans on Wednesday.

Books were written about him and he even starred in a number of news articles.

He demobilised in November 1945 and, two years later, led the Wembley Parade of 32 war dogs in front of 10,000 spectators.

When Rob received the Dickin Medal, his owner Edward Bayne told the Oban Times how caring he had been as a farm dog.

"He used to help settle the chicks in their houses at night, picking them up in his mouth when they had strayed away โ€“ he had a wonderful mouth โ€“ and tucking them in under their mothers."

Edward's son Basil, who lives in Northern Ireland, learned to walk as a baby by holding onto Rob's tail or clutching his coat.

Basil said: "Following his wartime exploits, Rob was returned to us and settled back into life on the farm, occasionally making public appearances to help raise funds for returning prisoners of war and their families.

"In February 1948 he disappeared for five days with his companion, our other dog, Judy, a spaniel.

"Rob returned in an emaciated condition without his collar - his collar was what we called his everyday collar. It had red white and blue ribbon all around it.

"Several years later a local farm worker out rabbiting with spade found the collar hooked around the root of a tree. Rob had strained and lost weight until he was able to slip the collar over his head.

"This dilapidated collar, now missing all ribbons, is among the items in the auction and the strain on the holes in the collar is obvious!โ€

Rob died in 1952, aged 12.

The Dickin Medal has been awarded on 71 occasions โ€“ 32 times to pigeons, 34 to dogs, four to horses, and one to a cat.

Most of these were for acts of bravery during the Second World War but more recently the medal has gone to arms and explosives search dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’– NEW ARRIVAL ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–

Everyone, meet Sparrow ๐Ÿ’œ

So yesterday, we got a call about a kitten that needed our help. The person couldn't keep him, and we couldn't say no to helping โค๏ธ

Turns out this little boy is approx 7 weeks old, and very needy! He wants human attention alllll the time and he loves sitting on the shoulder! Apart from being a little underweight, he is relatively healthy ๐Ÿ˜

We will get Sparrow onto a good diet, visit the Vet for his vaccination and microchip, then he will be ready to find his furever home ๐Ÿฅฐ

โค๏ธโค๏ธ FOSTER OR FUREVER HOME NEEDED โค๏ธโค๏ธ

Our gorgeous boy George is still needing a foster or furever home!

He is a beautiful boy who is just misunderstood. He loves children, and is great with other dogs.. although needs to slowly meet them as he gets excited on the lead when they're around.
Unfortunately this was something that developed after George was originally adopted. We don't know what happened during his months away from us, but he returned to us highly strung when on lead :(

His current foster family has been working with him as much as they can, but as their circumstances have changed it's become more and more difficult to find the time for him that he needs ๐Ÿ’• We need to find him a new foster or preferably a furever home ASAP!

If you can help, please message us ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ’œ For Foster Carers: We cover all vet expenses, we have food donations and can supply any training equipment he may need! You will have online access to our Qualified Dog Trainer as well as our experienced handlers ๐Ÿ˜Š

George requires an active home, with 6ft secure fencing and preferably with another well adjusted/trained dog for company โค๏ธ He will need a family who is patient and kind, whilst also willing to set boundaries and continue his training. He will in return provide you with loyalty, love and a babysitter* ๐Ÿคฃ

This boy is your typical, lovable staffy who just wants to please and have fun! He isn't a troublemaker, he is just always happy ๐Ÿ˜Š He is sweet and kind, and an absolute delight to have around. He loves people ๐Ÿฅฐ

We have reduced George's adopt fee to just $29 ๐Ÿพ

If you can foster or adopt George, please send us a message to discuss further ๐Ÿ˜Š you can also find a link to his adoption profile in the comments below ๐Ÿ‘‡

*because a caution must always be shared: please as a rule, do not ever leave young children unattended with dogs

Did you know that there are a number of factors that make a dog hypoallergenic and there is in fact no such thing as a truly non-shedding dog?

Humans with allergies to dogs can result in the likes of asthma and allergic rhinitis and sadly can be the cause of dogs being rehomed...or....the excuse that is used at the time.

There are different ways humans can be allergic to dogs:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Dander - this is the dead flakes of skin dogs shed (and you also shed). Dogs of all breeds shed skin. When a person is allergy tested, dander is generally what they test for an IgE-mediated dog allergy.

๐Ÿ”ฅSaliva - when a dog licks you or their saliva comes in contact with your skin. In a 2013 study[1], they found that most of the people allergic to dander were also allergic to saliva but 20% of people experiencing allergies to dogs who were not allergic to dander were allergic to the saliva.

Some people with allergies report that they are allergic to some dogs' salvia but not others, and this is because the IgE-binding protein profile of saliva differs dog to dog[1].

Whilst dogs can be trained not to lick people, it is a more ingrained behaviour trait in some dogs and may be challenging to eliminate entirely. If you are able to stop a dog from licking you, you may still come in contact with their salvia.

๐Ÿ”ฅHair - people allergic to dogs often buy low-shedding dogs not realising that actual dog hair is rarely the issue. All dogs shed including hairless dogs who are not completely bald, they do have some random body hair.

โš ๏ธ Hypoallergenic dogs - this means a dog that is less likely to cause a reaction, these dogs are often tight curly-coated dogs that can trap the likes of dander as well as being low shedding such as Poodles. People also find an appeal to Poodle crosses without realising that when you cross-breed a dog, that you take away any predictability of their traits aka coat - in one Cavalier x Poodle littler there could be a range of coat types.

Assistance Dogs Australia makes 5 recommendations on its website for their fav breeds [2]

1. Labradoodles - it is important to note that not all Lab x Poodles and dogs referred to as Labradoodles have inherited the hypoallergenic traits from the Poodle. Oodle breeding sadly is linked to a number of negative outcomes such as overbreeding for consumer demand and unethical breeding practices - it is important that you take time to research or just get a Poodle.

2. Schnauzers - these guys come in 3 sizes.

3. Italian Greyhound - watch the temperament of these guys, you do not want a nervous dog that is scared of everything.

4. Maltese

5. Shih Tzu

There are a number of breeds that are considered hypoallergenic that you may have not even heard of such as the Logotto which depending on how it's clipped can look Oodle like (Logotta breeders, don't hate me).

Check out https://hypoallergenicdog.net/ for more inspiration.

Once you've made your short-list, head to https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/list.asp to find yourself a registered breeder - you won't find non-registered breeds such as Oodles there though.

This is one of the MANY reasons why we do not recommend dog parks.... EVER!

Getting a puppy soon?

Save yourself the heart ache from potential injury, death or your dog becoming fear aggressive from bad experiencesโ€ฆdonโ€™t take your puppy to a dog park.

Having your puppy around strange dogs is not a safe way to socialise your puppy. Rely on friends and family with proven safe dogs.

Sniffaris: The Type of Walk Dogs Love Most ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

Many pet parents tend to think of dog walks as a time for their canine BFF to relieve themselves or get some exercise (which are important, of course). But for dogs, walking is their chance to satisfy the desire to sniff the always-fascinating world outside their home. They explore the world with their noses, so donโ€™t deprive them of their scent-ventures. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿšถ

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Couldn't have written it better myself!
31/08/2022

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
Couldn't have written it better myself!

The meaning of the word "volunteer" seems to have been diluted down into this vague, opaque noun in the animal welfare industry. According to the Oxford dictionary, a volunteer is " A person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise; undertake a task or work for an organisation without being paid." - sounds pretty obvious right?

However it seems, not so obvious anymore.

The model of operation and expenditure expectations between a business and a charity seem to have become blurry in the eyes of the public over the last 5 years.

Our response times and thus customer service output across a plethora of platforms, is expected to be in line with that of a full scale business with a designated, paid, administration board.

Our prices are expected to remain low under the guise that a charity is a resource offering substantially subsidized and supplementary products to those less fortunate. Despite simultaneously battling the same crippling inflation rate as everyone else, we are not allowed to have relevant and reflective adoption fees because then we are seen to be flying too close to the profit sun and not remaining in the animal welfare shadows.

However it is the world " Responsibility" that seems to be the most misunderstood and misguided meaning in rescue.

Responsibility is defined as the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. Responsibility is to be held accountable or to be the blame for something.

Recently we posted about the concept of surrender fees and one of the most common responses was: if we charge a surrender fee, we are directly responsible for an increase in animal dumpings.

This theory should gather dust next to Amber Herds autobiography in the Fiction section.

A rescue organisation is NOT responsible for the decisions or actions of other people.
An animal being dumped on the street is singlehandily the blame of the owner.

We freely take animals.
We freely dedicate our resources to create a safe option for animals.
We freely take on the legal duty of care of an animal, to ensure a safe, stable future.
We freely dedicate our time, health and finance to save as many animals from a premature death.
However we are not RESPONSIBLE for anything.

If a drunk person cannot get in my taxi because it is full and they in turn decide to drive home drunk and kill someone, I am not to blame. It was their actions, their choices and their lack of patience that was the direct causation - Not because I was full.

The same applies to charities. If we are full, we are not to blame for animals being dumped. If we charge a $25 fee and someone does not wish to pay that to ensure their dog gains ethical guardianship, we are not to blame. If we close our doors due to financial hardships and animals are abandoned, we are not to blame.

Quiet and Cuddly ๐Ÿค—

Cashew is a quiet little girl who enjoys spending her time cuddling with her foster mum and her foster cat brother!

Cashews favourite thing to do is snuggle up on a soft blanket and make biscuits ๐Ÿช sheโ€™s probably the worlds best kitty baker by now ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ

These babies had a rough start to life being left in the pound at such a young age ๐Ÿ˜ข so they will need a little time to get used to you but once they do itโ€™s purrs and snuggles galore! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Cashew would prefer a home with an older friendly cat who can show her the ropes and help her out at bath time ๐Ÿ˜‚ (as her cat foster brother always does)

She has grown up in a house hold with 2 other cats, a medium sized dog, a puppy and a guinea pig and loves each and every one of them after some time! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š

Cashew is fully litter trained! Which means no accidents in your home ๐Ÿ

We hope you can find it in your heart to consider this tiny baby in being a part of your family fur ever ๐Ÿ’›
