Our team thought this was such a profound statement, we had to reach out to Karen in what was an enriching and informative discussion about Pet loss and grief counselling.

We wondered if there was a common thread in her sessions… Karen says that many of her clients struggle with a “light at the end of the tunnel” and often wondered “If they would ever feel the same again”. The short answer is, No and here is why.

Loving and caring for a pet changes the very person you are, and the shared experiences create a unique connection. Karen says, “Your pet see’s you as you truly are, there are no masks when it comes to your pet”. This level of openness and acceptance creates an incredibly strong bond with our fur family.

When the bond is broken it can create an equally overwhelming feeling of grief and loss.

There are many layers of grief and after trauma and shock, there is often unnecessary guilt as well as remorse if pet owners have had to euthanise. Considering there are also different types of loss including surrendering or re-homing a pet due to a change in circumstance or move to aged care, a pet that gets lost as well as accidents resulting in death of a pet can all attribute to an owner’s unique grief experience.

Karen points out that it is also the profound “loss of a future”. The loss of ongoing companionship, routine, plans you may have made and the ongoing companionship that heavily impacts pet owners.

Karen is one of only a few Counsellors in Australia that is certified in Pet Loss and Bereavement with APLB (Assoc. of Pet Loss and Bereavement – USA) and offers advice and counselling to pet lovers from across the globe who have lost or anticipate losing their beloved pet.

It was an honour to assist Bec & Jay recently as we remember "Erin" with a very special story below. Thank you Bec & Jay for choosing modUrn Pet for your most beloved family members, it means everything to us ❤️

"We were lucky enough to be adopted by Erin when she was 12 months old.
At first we didn’t know what we had got ourselves into… A boisterous young Border Collie requires a lot of time, exercise and attention.
Luckily we were a young couple with lots of energy and she had us trained and wrapped around her fingers in no time.
Not without a few hiccups a long the way, like the time we caught her on top of the fence about to jump on the neighbours roof or when she ever so delicately and proudly, removed every single plant from our newly established garden.
A fiercely loyal, hardworking and caring companion and always in the middle of the action (usually with one of her trusty toys in tow).
She loved nothing more than heading out to the park with her Dad rain, hail or shine and thought every visitor to our home was there purely just to visit her.

Erin has been with us through the good times and bad, our constant little shadow and comfort for all of the family.
From celebrating our engagement, wedding, first homes and life’s daily joys to comforting us through unsuccessful pregnancies, terminal illness and life after losing someone.
There are too many stories to share but the constant theme is that she bought a smile to everyone with her big beautiful fan like tail flying high and her little ear tufts.

Sadly just shy of her 15th birthday we had to make the incredibly tough decision to say goodbye.
Having her still at home with us, sitting with my husband at his desk, where she would usually be gives us comfort.
I am so happy to have found ModUrns which we have used not only for Erin but for my Mum as well.
It is so nice to have our loved ones still part of the family and not hidden out of sight, in such a stylish modern way.
