Today our beautiful boy Henry was returned to Nicole and his family; human and fur. The fur children knew he was back and came to pay respects. The rescue made sure Henry was treated with love, respect and dignity in his death as he was in his life. We love and miss you Henry!

Rescue can have its highs and lows. The highs of finding perfect homes and the lows when they are sick or we need to love them while in palliative care. Christmas is coming so more dogs will be surrendered. Foster carers are always welcomed and supported. If you cannot foster then anyone can help in some little way and make a difference in a dog’s life.

UPDATE: We have had some fantastic applications for Molly. As much as each application is deserving of adopting her, there is only one Molly. We are carefully going through all the applications. Sadly, people will miss out. Other dogs will be posted soon.

We have another pup, Molly, who came into care due to no fault of her own. There was health issues involved which resulted in them no longer being able to keep her. She is a puppy so does all the crazy puppy things. If you are interested in Molly, read her bio by clicking on the link below 👇 in the comments.

A Celebration of Life~A Tribute to Henry. This is his story.

On the 24 August 2024, Henry and his brother Winston was surrendered to our rescue for rehoming. These two boys had spent the second half of their life relegated to the backyard once the children were born.

On arrival into care we quickly saw what a sensitive soul Henry was. He spent the first 3 days looking towards the gate, waiting for his family to come back. His carers showed him they cared. Although he would come for a pat, he was happy to receive this and walk away. Both Henry and Winston started to relax into their new temporary home while the rescue got their vet work done and find their forever family.

Nicole and her family (the boys foster carer) said they were always happy to see them. They just had to say their name and their tails would wag.

Winston, we knew, needed a number of lumps removed. 10 days after joining his foster family, he was taken for his surgery. In the meantime, at home, Henry was not himself. He was flat and going to hide under a bench in the garden. Nicole recognised something was not right and he was booked in to see the vet that afternoon at the same time Winston was picked up.

Dr Ed at Brookfield Veterinary Surgery realised almost immediately that there was a serious problem. Henry was admitted to their hospital and put on a drip. His blood work and ultrasounds showed he was bleeding internally and was a very sick boy. As a rescue we were gutted. We all cried that this should not be how it ends for Henry. It was not fair! His happy furever was suppose to be starting, not ending. We had to make a decision on what we were going to do. We knew he was in good hands with our rescue vets. It was too late in the afternoon to operate so he was put on a drip with medication to clot his blood.

The next morning Dr Ed got to the surgery early to check on our special boy. Henry wagged his tail and we decided we needed to give him a chance. So the operation went ahead. His spleen was removed along with some spots on his liver. We had to wait now to see what the results were on his spots.

Henry came home and we were all so positive for a happy outcome for him. He had recovered from the surgery beautifully and we were seeing him be so happy and playful. His true personality was emerging.

We found out that Henry loved going on walks. He liked to bark at some of the other dogs on his way to the dog park. He loved the park and enjoyed a recall game. He would run to one end of the park only to be called to go back to the other end for a tasty treat. Yep, he loved his treats.

His carer discovered he was interested in the possums that lived in the local trees. He had a keen eye and nose and would see them long before anyone else did. He was an observer.

Henry loved the luxuries of life. Despite not being allowed to, he would jump up on the couch. His carer let him do it. After all he had just had a big operation and deserved to be spoilt.

A week after his operation we got the news we did not want to hear. He had some aggressive cancer spots on his liver. It had not spread but the prognosis was not good. He was given a month to 6 weeks to live. Henry was oblivious and just enjoying his life. He played with Winston and his beagle foster brothers.

Our goal for him was to give him all he needed to enjoy the remainder of his life.

So, for Henry he went to the beach. Saw some cows and was prepared to go and say hello to these ‘huge dog.’

He went to Lure Course with his brother and foster brothers. Winston was a keen participant while Henry was prepared to sniff and enjoy these new smells.

He went to our Beagle Christmas party and loved spending time in the park.

He went to the cricket to watch his human foster brother play.

He was walked every morning and evening. He never wanted to miss out.

He snuggled with his foster family on the couch.

He kept all the locals in order while they walked down the side lane.

The tent put in the backyard was a great place to relax in during the day.

He would go out ‘ possum spotting’ at night when he was supposed to be going to the toilet. After all, he needed to bark at them and tell them they had to leave his yard. His foster family laughed about having to try and grab him to bring him inside to keep the possums safe and to stop barking while he demonstrated his side stepping skills.

He did not want to miss out on the family’s Christmas photo and plonked himself in the front.

In the last month, Henry realised his foster family were his people. He loved them deeply and he now sought them out for cuddles. His tail would wag with joy whenever he saw them or they said his name. He decided this place WAS his home.

In the last 3 weeks, Henry had 2 incidents of internal bleeding. His family treated him and made sure he was not in pain. Each time he would come out if it and acted like nothing had happened. While he continued to enjoy a quality of life, we allowed him to continue on. We had him checked with the vets and they assured us he still had some life in him. We knew the signs and the treatment to administer to make sure he was ok. Henry was a fighter! Always bouncing back bigger and better when we thought it was time.

On 28 November Henry went out in the morning for his normal walk. He was the leader of the pack for the day and having a ball. At about 7pm, he approached his foster mum and was looking for comfort. She gave him his meds and laid with him as she had done before, stroking his soft velvety ears. This time he was not going to bounce back. Instead he passed away peacefully and surrounded by a love he had never known.

We want to honour your life Henry. Your life mattered and we all loved you. Now join all our loved dog and cats who have passed on. They are waiting for you sweet boy.

Thank you to all who donated to give Henry his chance of life and all of you wishing him well. You became a part of his journey.

Finally, thank you to Nicole and her family for all you did for him. You are Henry’s heros.

On Saturday we put up a post saying we had a case of the blues as nobody seemed to want to adopt Toast and Honey. That post created so much interest and we were all blown away by the number of people who applied. When we told Toast he was amazed too!

The next part is always, the hardest as we now have to select the best family for our dear married couple.

All the people who have applied are more than worthy. We read your applications carefully. We then need to pick who we believe are the perfect match for Toast and Honey. We have conversations with their carer and the committee. We select one lucky family to call to have a further chat. We know some people will be disappointed but we make a decision on what we think is right based on what we know about them. And, although people are disappointed, we have no doubt you will be happy for Toast and Honey. After all, it’s all about the dogs right?! 💕🐾🐶

Do you ever get a case of weekend blues? We are feeling a little down. Our poor bonded pair Toast and Honey are still with us and nobody is interested in them. We had 5 expressions of interest. 2 people ghosted us. And others pulled out or it was not the right situation for these two. We are not being fussy. We just want them to have a happy loving home where they are treated as part of the family. They are beautiful easy going and healthy dogs. Surely someone wants these gorgeous souls? Let’s find their perfect home for Christmas 🎄 They deserve this.

Once again, we received food from ARC and supporting companies. We tell you time and time again what a difference this makes for our small rescue. We try hard to ensure our carers have limited or no financial impact when they foster one of our Beagles. Of late we have had lots of older dogs with health issues and younger ones with the need for formal training. This creates a strain on finances. We want to be able to help as many as our resources allows us to do. So this food donation means we can continue on with our mission of:

NO HOUND LEFT BEHIND 🐾🐶💕

Update: With advise from the dog behaviourist, we have placed Bruno with a person who we all believe could be the perfect fit for this busy boy.

Hi all beagle lovers. Bruno has been advertised a couple of times now but we have yet been able to find the perfect home for him. He really is a good boy who needs the right home. After much consideration we have decided to do a foster to adopt situation to avoid him being moved around.

Please read his bio and consider if you would like to adopt him or foster to adopt. His bio has been updated and you can read it by clicking the link below. ⬇️
