Why Does Matting Occur in Dog Coats?
I’m glad you asked because I have the perfect demonstration!
This picture shows my hair mixed with Spitz undercoat. With just a little moisture (or sometimes even without it), this combination could easily turn into a tangled mess.
The soft, fluffy dead undercoat is no longer attached to a follicle, which makes it highly mobile. As you can see, it has intertwined itself with my hair—which mimics a dog’s guard hairs. How does this happen? The culprit is wind! In my example, it was the air from a dryer, but for dogs, it’s typically just natural wind.
Friction further worsens this issue, tightening the tangled undercoat around the guard hairs. The result? A stronger, more stubborn mat that’s much harder to separate.
Notice how my hair (or the guard hairs) generally aligns in one direction, while the undercoat tangles across it diagonally, like threads being woven on a loom.
So, how can you avoid matting? The key is to keep all the fibers running in the same direction. Regular brushing is essential to prevent these tangles and keep your furry friend’s coat healthy and mat-free!
