Miracle Marilyn the Shetland Sheepdog is on her way to becoming an assistance dog after an incredible fight for her life…
When Marilyn was 4 years old, her owner Caroline noticed Marilyn wasn’t keeping up with her siblings & was struggling during their walks. After a few vet visits, over a couple of months, and being told that there was nothing wrong, Caroline trusted her gut instinct, researched & found a specialist who did an MRI & discovered Marilyn had a tumour on her spinal cord. A biopsy determined it was a spinal meningioma. In December 2021, Marilyn had surgery to remove the tumour. While recovering from the surgery, Marilyn had hydrotherapy and physiotherapy twice weekly for a month, to ensure she regained normal movement of her back legs. In January 2022, Marilyn started her chemotherapy and radiation treatments, 5 days a week for four weeks. Caroline’s unwavering love & dedication paid off. A year & half on, Marilyn is cancer free, back to her long walks, running on the beach & chasing balls; and she recently passed her 6 month assessment to become an assistance dog.

What not to feed your dog at Christmas.
Cooked bones – they can shatter and splinter causing puncturing or blockages of internal organs;
Fat Trimmings – excessive amounts of fat at one time can cause pancreatitis;
Onions – are highly poisonous to dogs and cause the destruction of red blood cells, leading to weakness, vomiting, blood in urine and breathlessness. Particularly dangerous when raw;
Corn on the cob – can lodge in the small intestine requiring surgical removal;
Plum Pudding, grapes and raisins – can contain a toxin created by a fungus that can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure;
Macadamia nuts – can cause uncomfortable symptoms in dogs including weakness, drunken gait and joint swelling;
Chocolate and sweets – small amounts can cause vomiting & diarrhoea; large quantities can induce tremors, hyperactivity, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest;
Alcohol – can make dogs extremely ill and can be life threatening;
Caffeine – a moderate amount can cause damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and central nervous system and trigger hyperactivity, vomiting, staggering gait, muscle tremors and convulsions.

Run free Kody 💖 Thank you for the love & joy you brought. Forever in my heart.
For Sally, so sorry for your loss:
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill, Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still. Where the friends of man and woman do run, When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next, Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest. On this golden land, they wait and they play, Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness, For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness. Their limbs are restored, their health renewed, Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care, Until one day they start, and sniff at the air. All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back, Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met; Together again, both person and pet. So they run to each other, these friends from long past, The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart, Has turned into joy once more in each heart. They embrace with a love that will last forever, And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Heat exhaustion and dehydration can be deadly to dogs!
Dogs are made up of 80% water (humans are 60%). In the heat of summer, your dog requires more water, more often. A general rule of thumb: a dog needs 70mls of water per kilogram of body weight, so a 4.5kg dog needs 2 bowls a day, and a 35kg dog needs 10!
Tips for summer: walk & exercise your dog early morning & late afternoon. Carry a portable water bottle/dish to provide them water often. Remember, they can feel the heat & burn their paws on sand, concrete & bitumen. At home, ensure your dog has access to shade all day; let them dig to lie in cool soil/sand; & provide a clam shell pool with shallow water as a great way for your dog to cool down!

Has your dog trained you? 😄
Many of the unwanted behaviours in dogs, have been unintentionally reinforced by their owners. Dogs are always learning… good behaviors and the undesirable ones too! The good news is that no matter what their age, you can change a dog’s behaviour & their owner’s too 😉
