Never forget your feline friend too!
They’re also needing their nails attended to.
If not trimmed or filed down, these nails can keep growing to a point where they are uncomfortable for the cat or may even curl back into their toe or paw pad. In some cases, long nails may get torn out and cause bleeding or other problems for the cat.
Never do this unless you are confident in doing so.

🐌 Dangerous parasite found in Queensland gardens 🐌

12 week old Byron had a lucky escape from rat lung worm recently.

He was first seen by our emergency team after he suddenly developed loss of function and pain in his back legs. He was also dribbling urine.

Byron was transferred to our internal medicine team who performed a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tap to collect a small sample of the fluid that surrounds ByronΒ΄s brain and spinal cord. From this we were able to determine that Byron had a parasitic infection, specifically Angiostrongylus cantonensis. This is commonly known as rat lung worm.

Rat lung worm is carried by molluscs and the next host in the life cycle is a rat. However, if a different species ingests the mollusc host, such as a dog or human, the parasite often migrates to the central nervous system causing damage and inflammation, resulting in neurological disease.

Byron was treated with pain relief and an ongoing course of ant-inflammatory medication. At his most recent check up he was doing very well and his neurological signs have almost entirely resolved.

This little parasite is one of the reasons we need to wash our fruit and veggies properly, especially our lettuce. Dogs (and children) can also ingest slugs, snails or their mucous while playing in the backyard. Keeping vegetable gardens sectioned off and dog bowls regularly cleaned is important. Early detection is key, so it’s important to be on the look-out for the following symptoms:
🐌 Pain, swelling or inflammation of the spinal cord which may lead to hypersensitivity
🐌 Inability to move or stand up
🐌 Disinterest in food and water
🐌 Raised temperature

An important message from our beautiful mascot Dora!!

We have seen a dramatic increase in heat related illness over the last week, ranging from heatstroke (which can be fatal), to gastro, respiratory distress and an increase in infectious disease illness.

With February set to be a hot and humid month, please take plenty of precautions with your pets, and do not put them at unnecessary risk of heat stress.

Ensure your pets have plenty of access to fresh, cool water; shade and protection from the elements; do NOT exercise them in the middle of the day, and take precautions for any shallow pools or water sources that may heat up if left out in the sun (ie shell pools and water sources). This is also a good chance to make sure your pets are up to date with their preventatives, especially worm, tick and Heartworm prevention, parasites which thrive in humid and hot conditions.

Stay cool like our gorgeous Dora, and enjoy sun and heat safe activity while keeping your pets happy and safe in this Brisbane Summer β˜€οΈ

As a professional pet groomer, I have seen and heard it all. Please read and share this, as we all know someone who has a pet that gets groomed. Sometimes people are not aware of what we deal with.

1. RESPECT YOUR PET GROOMERS PROFESSION

We do a physically demanding, and sometimes disgusting job. You bring your pets to us because you can not or do not want to groom them. Many of us have degrees. We CHOSE this job. We did not get stuck with it. DO NOT look down on us for our career choice.

2. Getting bit is NOT part of our job!

If your pet bites, TELL US! It hurts, it can cause loss of income, and it can end our career. Yes, you read correctly: one bad bite in the wrong place can END OUR CAREER!!! If we find out that you knew your pet bit, and you did not tell us, you are liable to get fired and we will warn surrounding groomers of your pet to protect them from injury.

3. DO NOT ASK FOR A DISCOUNT

This is our salary. Our paycheck. Our livelihood. How we put food on our table for our FAMILIES AND CHILDREN/FUR-CHILDREN. How we pay our bills. You would not want to be paid less at your job because someone did not want to pay what your work is worth. It is YOUR choice to bring Fluffy in every two weeks NOT OURS. It is YOUR choice to have more than one pet, NOT OURS. We are still doing the same amount of work. We should NOT have to take a pay cut for these reasons. (If we offer you a discount, it is for a good reason. DO NOT tell all your friends and family)

4. Call to cancel your appointment. DO NOT NO SHOW!!

If you do not show up, we DO NOT get paid, yet we still have to pay employees that do not have any pets to work on. Be RESPECTFUL of our time and give us the courtesy of a call or text so we can fill the appointment slot. Smartphones all have calendars with reminders AND alarms on them. You don’t forget doctor appointments, please do not forget your pet appointment.

5. DO NOT call or text us after hours

We have families and social lives too. You wouldn’t want your boss to text you at 11pm or 6:30am about work. Neither do we.

6. TRUST your groomer

If you do not trust your groomer, find one you do. We care about your pets and come to love them like our own. RESERACH YOUR GROOMER!

7. DO NOT ask us to de matt your pet.

If you do not brush your pet, we are not going to put them through the unnecessary pain of de matting them so you can keep them long. We are not in the business of harming animals. Humanity over vanity.

8. DO NOT SHOW UP EARLY FOR PICKUP

We may still be working on your pet. If you show up early with out calling or texting us, we may not be able to safely complete your pet. We work with extremely sharp tools and that combined with an over excited pet, can lead to an accident.

9. DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT A PRICE INCREASE

Everyone deserves a raise. EVERYONE. We are no exception. This is how we get a raise. We spend thousands of dollars on tools, equipment, and educational seminars. Hundreds of hours educating ourselves. Our time and knowledge is valuable. DO NOT undermine that by complaining about our prices. You would not like it if someone said your knowledge and skill was not worth it.

APPRECIATE AND RESPECT YOUR PET GROOMER. We deal with a lot physically, emotionally, and mentally doing what we LOVE. DO NOT make it harder by being that client that is a repeat offender of any of the above!

This message has been approved by groomers around the world! 🐢❀️🐱

While rawhide dog chews are usually used for dogs who love to chew or as a distraction for an anxious or overstimulated dog, there are fortunately many safer dog chew options you can give your dog without the potential risks.

Rawhides are meant to be long-lasting chews that break down into tiny, soft pieces over time. However, strong chewers are typically able to break off large chunks that can pose a major choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage, and both are life-threatening events.

Most rawhide products are not easily digested as rawhide is made from dried animal skin, essentially the byproduct of leather. Many use chemicals and dyes when processing these chews.

If you are going to give your dog raw hide, it should be under close supervision, chewers tend to get large pieces all soft and gooey then swallow it, this is where the problems can start.

Best not to give rawhide period.

If you are interested in safe choices of chew toys, here is a link to the Veterinary Oral Health Council... look to left once on link and you will get option for dog or cat safe products.

Space Pet Care and many others encourages pet owners to please establish a relationship with your local veterinarian. Building a relationship helps both your pet and you, incase of an emergency.

LET ME BE β€œNOSEY”
Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through beautiful scenery, after you have been cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged along at a quick pace. I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop and sniff the environment. Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information and make sense of the world. Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk is not in their best interests and as much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.
Studies have shown that allowing dogs to spend time sniffing provides so many benefits – promoting calmness, lowering stress and anxiety levels, lowering pulse rates, preventing cognitive decline and providing mental stimulation and enrichment are just some examples.
Make time for a slow β€œsniffing walk”, where your dog is allowed to decide which direction to go and allowed to simply be β€œnosey” and follow wherever their nose leads them. It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it.
