Meet Remi. This sweet girl loves to chase anything with wheels. Together with her family we are working through a behaviour management plan starting with helping Remi to relax.
Like many working dogs Remi is raring to go and has a strong working instinct, herding in her case. But she struggles to settle.
We started “place” training where Remi is encouraged to relax on her bed.
The latest update is that Remi is enjoying relaxation time on her bed next to her family every night and they can even walk away out of sight briefly and Remi remains on her bed. This is great progress in little over a week.
Sometimes to improve a specific behaviour we need to work on other skills first.

Crate training practice with River. This was last night when we were getting ready for bed. River chose to go into her crate and fell asleep with the door wide open.
The crate should be a safe, comfortable and relaxing place for a dog and somewhere they choose to go for rest. As River is a timid dog she is looking for safety and the crate appeals to her. I have fed her in the crate a couple of times and that has been enough for her to seek it out.
When crate training, I always recommend you build up a calm and relaxed association with the crate first before you progress to overnight.

Day one with our new foster puppy River. I picked her up last night and she was the perfect passenger during our drive home. We kept the introduction to our two dogs brief to save it for the morning.
It was love at first sight for Jett and Benny is stoked to have another dog to play around with.
River is a very timid and weary puppy so we kept her on a 10 metre long line for the first half of the day as we were unable to get close to her and it’s a great way to manage a puppy.
She really started to come out of her shell on our dog walk and we watched as her confidence grew throughout the day. By the afternoon the three dogs were gallivanting around the property, running together and exploring.

I just realised I haven’t officially introduced Benny!
We started fostering Benny back in March and it was a total foster fail from the very beginning. He fit so seamlessly into our family and quickly became best friends with Jett.
He is quirky, playful, cheeky and so adorable. He makes us laugh and keeps us on our toes. He is also pretty chill and gives Jett space when he needs it and doesn’t take Jett’s big brother attitude too seriously.
Now we are settled, his training will be kicking up a notch so you will no doubt be seeing more of him and his training progress in the future 😊

Our new home came with 4 alpacas which are animals that our city dogs have not seen before.
We have been exposing the dogs to the alpacas (and vice versa) regularly and at distance either while walking or stopping to watch. We are aiming for neutrality where the dogs can observe without action. I do not want the dogs to approach the alpacas or bark at them.
Jett is not phased much by the alpacas but Benny is as curious about them as they are of him!

Training tip: how to start structured rest time for your dog.
Dogs need structured down time every day to rest, relax and recharge. I find particularly with puppies, working dog breeds, high energy or anxious dogs that they don’t get the structured rest they need. These dogs often only lay down for very short periods, pace, lack focus, ignore commands and in the case of puppies, bite and mouth with more voracity.
Structured rest time can be done in a number of ways and if your dog struggles with this, start by having them lay on their dog beds right next to you and reward them for staying on the bed. Be calm and quiet and reflect this to your dog.

After searching for nearly a year, selling our Perth home and basing ourselves in the South West for the last few months we finally have our new home!

We have 15 acres just outside of Nannup with plans for a purpose built dog training facility.
In the meantime, I will be splitting my time between Nannup and Perth providing 1:1 private dog training and behaviour modification and continuing my work in dog rescue.

We are so excited for our future plans and can’t wait to show you around and get the dog training facility up and running!

We have spent quite a bit of time recently in Northcliffe WA taking some time out. Our favourite dog walking track is at the Northcliffe Forest Park and highly recommend for anyone heading down that way.
There are several pathways to take and we love the one that crosses the river. Jett loves the water but Benny was hesitant at first but has built up his courage!

Training tip: practice at home first.

If your dog is not able to manage the behaviour or activity at home, they are unlikely to be able to manage when outside surrounded by a world full of distractions.

Whether it’s walking skills, focus, recall or basic manners, training the activity or behaviour in the home first, then start to practice outside.

What a difference 9 months make! This is Bear at 13 weeks when I first met him and again now at 12 months.
Bear is past the puppy stage and has entered adolescence. His family have done a wonderful job of teaching him the foundational skills of life while navigating the trials of puppyhood.
Bear has made dog friends, learned how to sit for things he wants and how to be respectful of his family members. The focus is now on mastering the recall so he can have time safely off lead.

I’m still taking bookings for private dog training sessions AND I work weekends.

All of my private training packages start with a 90-minute session to understand the issues and formulate a training and management plan. Your personalised plan is documented so you always have access to each step by step aspect of the training plan. I also provide unlimited follow up support via phone and email to answer any questions as you work through the plan.

For many issues like reactivity, anxiety and resource guarding more than one in person session is required and additional 60 minute sessions are available as needed.

If you are interested please PM me or book directly through my website https://leaderofthepack.com.au

Should you let your dog on your bed (or couch)?

My professional opinion is that this is fine if it’s what you want as long as you set appropriate boundaries AND as long as your dog does not display resource guarding behaviour.

It’s also ok if you DON’T want your dog on the bed or furniture. Teach them that they are not allowed to get up on the furniture and where they can go instead.

I’m visiting my sister for a few days and one of my favourite activities is going on walks with her dog Kea 🥰
A part of her normal walking routine is some long lead time at the local park. Kea loves to sniff the trees and bushes and stalk the local bird life if she can get away with it!
Although Kea has a very good recall, the park is open and surrounded by some busy roads and the long lead provides that extra bit of safety and security.

I’m back!!!
Here is an update of what we have been up to lately and a promise that I’ll once again be sharing dog training tips, tricks and help after my long hiatus from social media.
The last 12 months have been particularly challenging for our family BUT we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and have some very exciting news and updates to share shortly! 🎉
In the meantime, I am still offering private dog training sessions around Perth like normal though group obedience classes are on hold.
We have spent the last few months taking some time off, exploring the wonderful South West region in our caravan with our dogs Benny and Jett. It has been a an amazing experience and I’ve included just a few pics of our dogs enjoying
