Is anyone able to help Oscar and his wonderful rescue out? They’ve just done a big rescue and need help.
All we can say is WOW! Yesterday was a huge day and a mammoth rescue effort from not only my amazing team but the neighbourhood surrounding the rescue site!
Earlier in the week we were alerted to a growing situation in the Moreton Bay Region by a concerned local Real Estate who had received multiple complaints about Guinea Pigs frequenting their tenants yards and wreaking havoc on their plants and disrupting their own animals.
So of course we formulated a plan and sprung into action. What we were met with was nothing short of awful. There were Guinea pigs everywhere and not all of them were living. Every second Guinea Pig we found was deceased. There were skeletons and corpses throughout the bushy area they were frequenting.
It didn’t take us long to find the source of the turmoil. A backyard in which the piggies were allowed free roam in and out, males and females intermingling and we know what that means… YEP! You guessed it, a whole slew of heavily pregnant females of varying ages and sizes amongst the males of varying ages and sizes.
For those who are not aware, Guinea Pigs can breed from as young as 4 weeks old and therefore males should be separated from their mothers and sisters from around 3 weeks to prevent interbreeding.
It didn’t take us long to catch our first piggy, a heavily pregnant female, and we then proceeded to catch a further 18 Guinea’s, making the total save 19 with many more yet to catch.
Unfortunately we were losing daylight fast and have had to leave some behind for the next few days due to work commitments but the wonderful neighbourhood is keeping a close eye on the situation and reporting back accordingly. We are hoping to return early next week to capture as many of the remaining piggies as possible.
Unfortunately however, with 12 of the piggies rescued being pregnant females, the numbers within this intake alone are likely to just about triple as the mamas progressively give birth to their babies. While we love all things Guinea Pig, unnecessary overbreeding is a real problem and this rescue is going to cause a large financial strain on our rescue.
These sweet pigs are not in good condition. They may appear chunky, but it’s all baby. You can feel their bones. They’re malnourished, some have ringworm, some have overgrown teeth and nails and they are all generally going to need a fair amount of time and TLC to get them to an adoptable standard post birthing.
Simply put, we’re going to need help. Our adoption fee of only $25 per pig would be lucky to cover one Guinea Pigs food for a week, let alone mite and lice treatments, worming treatments and any additional medications and cares they may need.
That’s where you guys come in. We need your help. They need your help. Any support you can offer financially would mean the world to us in our current situation! Please consider donating even just a few dollars. Every single dollar makes a difference!
