We've unpacked a beautiful shipment of red clover this week, ready to incorporate into our blend for moody mares, Serene Queen, and our blood & lymphatic tonic, Etherlite.
Red clover is traditionally revered as a women's tonic and blood purifier. It can help to eliminate excessive levels of circulating hormones - making your mare more comfortable, and less irritable. Plus, with its rich array of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, it can help to improve your best girl's overall health and wellness.
Red clover is also a traditional cardiovascular tonic, immune system booster, anti-inflammatory agent, and bone-builder - safe to say, it packs a nutritional punch!

Has your horse become laminitic following a stressful event?
When horses experience mental or emotional stress โ a change of home or pasture mates, a frightening event, sudden heavy work, or travel โ the adrenal gland goes into overdrive producing cortisol, aldosterone and epinephrine (aka adrenaline). These all serve to support the fight-or-flight response and keep your horse safe.
Unfortunately, for some horses it can become just the right chemical storm to set off a laminitic event within the hoof, which can have devastating and even deadly consequences for your beloved equine companion.
Read our SOS guide for horses experiencing stress-induced laminitis:

New research from Switzerland has confirmed one way in which the immune system relies on magnesium to help you (& your horse) overcome infection and disease.
The research, conducted by Lotscher et al (2022), was working on understanding the role of magnesium in the bonding, or docking, of T cells, to infected and cancerous cells in the body.
T Cells โ Seeking and Destroying
These immune system cells are initially made in the bone marrow, then migrate to the thymus to mature (hence the name T cells). Once mature, they enter circulation, where they are responsible for โseeking and destroyingโ unwanted cells in the body (a process called apoptosis).
In a healthy body, this is how damaged, cancerous and tumorous cells are dealt with, before they can become a problem.
Itโs also one way that your body overcomes infection. The T cells dock or attach themselves to the undesired cells, and then set off a chain reaction of biochemical events, ending in the death of the unwanted cell, before it can further replicate or cause harm.
To make that attachment, they rely on the integrin LFA-1, and LFA-1 relies on, you guessed it, magnesium.
LFA-1 and The Magnesium Factor
LFA-1, or lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1, is like a helper-arm, attached to the outside of a mature T cell. When it isnโt in use, it is folded over, in its โinactive formationโ. When the arm is required, it is sent signals to extend itself into an active formation, so that it can connect to a pathogenic cell and destroy it.
Research over the years has demonstrated the vital importance of LFA-1 in combatting various types of tumours, cancers, viruses, and bacteria, and has concurred that magnesium-deficient subjects tend to struggle much more with overcoming infection and cancerous disease, although they were unsure exactly why.
Now, Lotscher et al have given us a clear insight into the relationship of LFA-1 and magnesium, known as the magnesium-LFA-1 axis.
They demonstrated that if the extracellular fluid (the fluid floating around outside of the cells) is low in magnesium, the arms arenโt properly stimulated to outstretch. They hang out in a semi-erect formation at best, where they can weakly attach to some pathogenic cells, but not well, and not all.
The Takeaway
Effectively, this means that one huge part of your horseโs immune system is only working at a fraction of its true ability, meaning that your horse is going to have a much harder time overcoming an infection.
If your horse is experiencing any kind of immune system challenge, be it a persistent or recurring viral or bacterial infection, tumour, or cancer, it makes sense to ensure that your horseโs dietary magnesium supply is at an optimum level.
Similarly, if you are planning to travel your horse and therefore present new immune system challenges, it would also be pertinent to take pre-emptive action, and make the most of a magnesium-rich immune system.

For some horses, even the slightest changes in diet, environment or training schedule can instigate gastrointestinal distress. A little off feeling can quickly snowball into something more serious, and as every horse owner well knows, colic in horses is no light matter. Thankfully, there are a number of botanical heroes who can help to soothe an upset tummy, relieve trapped gas, and normalise intestinal flow. We've blended a few of our favourites, and created Menthazan. It's a 100% natural botanical blend, in an easy-to-administer, fast-acting liquid preparation, which will keep on the feed room shelf for up two years. Although hopefully you'll never need it, it is comforting to know that you have the option available to you, if and when the need arises.
Some of our people like to use Menthazan when they are away from home with their horses, especially if they know that their horse is prone to digestive upsets when their routine and surroundings are a little different.
Menthazan offers a delicious, sweet minty flavour that horses love, and a thick consistency, making it easy to administer orally, and an absolute pleasure for your horse, at a time when they can do with some positive vibes โค๏ธ๐ฟ๐ด
We are excited to announce that we now have chaste berries available for purchase in our online store!
What are chaste berries?
Chaste berries are the fruit of the chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus). It is a large shrub or small tree, growing anywhere from 1-6m tall, depending on soil quality and structure, with mass spikes of tiny, lilac to pink flowers in spring, followed by the peppercorn-like berries, which are used as medicine. It is native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia, where it has featured prominently in traditional medical systems for at least 1500 years; predominantly as a hormone-balancer.
Traditional indications included, for bringing in milk and cleansing the uterus after birthing, for reducing uterine inflammation and menstrual pain, for relieving some types of headaches, and for treating epilepsy and other disorders of the brain. Modern use around the world still echoes these sentiments, and chaste is widely used for a variety of female conditions, as well as being employed as a calmative herb. Chaste berry is a progesterone agonist, so in cases of low progesterone, it is used to improve fertility and protect against miscarriage.
For horses, chaste berry is most commonly used to provide support for mares who experience strong hormonal swings throughout their cycle, which can lead to behavioural issues, or just general discomfort for the mare.
According to the European Union herbal monograph, chaste berry is thought to influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, possibly masking the effects of prolactin, which may explain its usefulness in the management of Equine Cushingโs Disease.
Chaste berry is readily palatable to most horses, so it can be fed mixed directly into your horseโs daily hard feed. We offer chaste berry as a finely-ground meal of the whole, dried berry, which we grind freshly on-site and package into airtight, lightproof bags. This keeps the berries as fresh as possible until they get to you, for maximum retention of the beneficial constituents, while the small particle size makes them readily digestible by your horse once they enter the feed bucket, for optimal nutrient uptake. We also offer whole berries, in case you would like to grind your own. We recommend that you use your ground berries within six months of opening the bag, although the fresher the better, so if you are only feeding to a very small horse, it would be best to choose the smaller bag size.
Chaste berries are typically given at a rate of 2g/100kg bodyweight daily, or 10g daily for a 500kg horse.
We also offer chaste berries as a part of our tailored blend for โmoody maresโ โ Serene Queen.
If you're unsure which type of chaste berry is best for your horse, please feel welcome to get in touch; we love to help.

Chad, my #1 product tester since Medicine Tree's earliest days, wholeheartedly approves of the Autumn Blend.
One thing I hear consistently from horse trainers is how much their horses love their Medicine Tree supplements. So much so that where horses would once see a medicine or vitamin syringe coming and head to the far corner of their stable, they now hang over the stable door in eager anticipation.
All with no artificial flavourings, sweeteners, or refined sugar.
Medicine Tree supplements are made from real food ingredients, including herbs that horses would naturally seek out in a wild situation, to keep themselves feeling their best; and are formulated with care to make your daily feeding routine as simple and fuss-free as possible, with blends for all types of horses and conditions.
