Aurora Klee Kai Australia

Aurora Klee Kai Australia We are still in long process of importing from the USA, if everything goes to plan we hope to have our first litter by the end of next year (2013). S.

Please note though we had originally hoped to have our first dogs back in July 2012 this was not possible due to unforeseen events and we do not currently have any Klee Kai. Aurora Klee Kai is small home based family breeding program dedicated to breeding the Alaskan Klee kai. Alaskan Klee Kai's are a rare breed of dog, in appearance they are almost identical to the Siberian Husky aside from its s

maller size. At Aurora Klee Kai we are dedicated to breeding healthy purebred dogs. Our aim is to help diversify and promote this wonderful and rare breed while maintaining and improving where possible a healthy and pure bloodline . If you have any questions for us either about the Breed or ourselves please feel free to send us a PM or an email. Klee Kai general Information:

History: The Klee Kai is a fairly new breed of dog first appearing in the 1970's after a lady named Linda. Spurlin noticed the result of an accidental breeding of Siberian Husky and a smaller dog. She then proceeded to develop the breed by crossing the Siberian Husky with two smaller breeds the Schipperke and the American Eskimo dog. The Klee Kai was first recognized by the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) in 1995, followed by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1997. The breed of dog is currently not recognized in Australia therefor all dogs are registered and papers provided by the UKC. Appearance: Although the Alaskan Klee Kai does look remarkably like a small Siberian Husky there are a few notable differences, aside from the obvious one being their size, Klee Kai's have a higher tail set, shorter muzzle and larger ears than their larger companions. They come in three sizes Toy, Miniature, and Standard. There are three color combinations recognized, red and white, grey and white and black and white. Occasionally a full white or full black Klee Kai is born but this is considered to be a disqualification and not recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC). There are two different acceptable types of coat standard and full length, so long as the full length coat is not long enough that it obscures the outline of the dog. Due to their double layered coat they do require regular grooming a couple of times a week and then daily while they are shedding their coat which happens twice a year. They can have Blue or Brown eyes. Temperament: Klee Kai's are highly curious, intelligent and active. They require regular socialization as they can become quite shy and narky around strangers if not trained correctly, this trait means that they would make a much better guard dog than the Siberian Husky who generally simply love everyone no matter who they are. Like many other Arctic breeds of dog they do have a high prey drive so should not be allowed off leash in an unsecured area, this is because they may take off after something that catches their attention and fail to return at your call, as clearly what they are after is far more interesting than getting told off for running away. They are fantastic dogs if raised around other animals such as cats, how ever they may have difficulties learning to get along with them if introduced later in their life, although committed training can always help them to realize these other creatures are friends to play with or to simply to ignore them. The Alaskan Klee Kai is a pack animal therefor needs to firmly but gently be shown its place in the pack as below the other family members, if properly shown their place they will be happy and eager to please and impress you making an ideal companion.

American Eskimo Dog vs. Alaskan Klee Kai – A Comparison of Two Fluffy, Intelligent Breeds

The American Eskimo Dog and Alaskan Klee Kai are both **small, highly intelligent, and energetic breeds with striking, wolf-like or spitz-type appearances. While they share some similarities in their fluffy coats and lively personalities, they were bred for different purposes and have distinct differences in temperament, trainability, and energy needs.

Interestingly, the American Eskimo Dog was one of the breeds used in the development of the Alaskan Klee Kai, contributing to its intelligence, alert nature, and beautiful coat. Let’s dive into the comparison!

Origins & Breed Purpose
🐺 Alaskan Klee Kai – Developed in the 1970s in Alaska, this breed was created to resemble a miniature Husky but be more suitable as a companion dog. The breed was developed using Siberian and Alaskan Huskies, Schipperkes, and American Eskimo Dogs, which contributed to their intelligence, compact size, and lively temperament.

❄️ American Eskimo Dog – Despite its name, the breed originates from Germany, where it was known as the German Spitz before being renamed in the U.S. It was primarily bred as a circus performer and companion dog, making it naturally social, trainable, and eager to please.

Size & Appearance
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Comes in three size variations (Toy, Miniature, and Standard), ranging from 4.5–10 kg (10–22 lbs) and 33–43 cm (13–17 inches) tall. They have a sleek, athletic build, a distinct face mask, and a curled tail, resembling a small Husky.

🔸 American Eskimo Dog – Comes in three size variations (Toy, Miniature, and Standard), ranging from 2.5–16 kg (6–35 lbs) and 23–48 cm (9–19 inches) tall. They have a thicker, fluffier coat, a lion-like mane, and a pure white or cream coat with dark eyes and a confident expression.

Temperament & Personality
🐕 Alaskan Klee Kai – Intelligent, reserved with strangers, and strongly bonded to their owners. They tend to be aloof and require early socialization to prevent shyness. They are often vocal and prone to separation anxiety if left alone too long.

🎭 American Eskimo Dog – Highly intelligent, outgoing, and friendly. They thrive on human interaction and love to perform tricks, thanks to their circus dog ancestry. Unlike the Klee Kai, they are naturally sociable and welcoming to new people.

Trainability & Intelligence
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Highly intelligent but stubborn. They need firm, consistent training and positive reinforcement. They excel in agility and obedience but can be escape artists, requiring secure fencing.

🔸 American Eskimo Dog – Extremely eager to please and highly trainable, making them easier for first-time owners. They excel in trick training and obedience, and they love to engage in interactive play.

Energy & Exercise Needs
🏃‍♂️ Alaskan Klee Kai – High-energy and needs a lot of exercise. Daily walks, playtime, and mental stimulation are essential to keep them from becoming bored and destructive.

🎾 American Eskimo Dog – Also high-energy but slightly more adaptable. They enjoy exercise but can tolerate a mix of active play and relaxed indoor time, making them slightly easier to manage.

Grooming & Shedding
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Double-coated with seasonal shedding. They require regular brushing (especially during shedding season) but are generally clean dogs.

🔸 American Eskimo Dog – Heavy shedders year-round with a thick coat that requires frequent brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Their white fur stains easily, so they need more maintenance than the Klee Kai.

Suitability for Families & Other Pets
🏡 Alaskan Klee Kai – Best suited for active owners or small families** who understand Husky-like independence. They are **not as naturally social** as the Eskie and may take time to warm up to new people.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦American Eskimo Dog – A great family pet, naturally friendly and playful with kids. They do well in homes with other pets and are much more socially adaptable than the Klee Kai.

Which Breed is Right for You?
✅ Choose the Alaskan Klee Kai if…
- You want a mini-Husky with a striking appearance.
- You’re comfortable with an intelligent but independent dog.
- You have time for socialization and training.

✅ Choose the American Eskimo Dog if…
- You want a **friendly, affectionate companion.
- You prefer a dog that’s easier to train.
- You don’t mind **frequent grooming** and shedding.

Both breeds are stunning, intelligent, and high-energy, but their personalities and social needs differ significantly!

Alaskan Klee Kai vs. Schipperke – A Comparison of Two Small, Intelligent Breeds
The Alaskan Klee Kai and Schipperke are both compact, energetic breeds known for their intelligence and strong personalities. While they share some similarities in size and energy levels, they have distinct differences in temperament, trainability, and ideal living situations.

Origins & Breed Purpose
🐺 Alaskan Klee Kai – Developed in the U.S. as a companion-sized Husky, this breed was designed for family life rather than work. Despite their size, they retain Husky-like traits, including high energy and a strong prey drive.

🦊 Schipperke – Originating in Belgium, the Schipperke was bred as a watchdog and ratter on boats and farms. They are bold, fearless, and always on alert, making them excellent little guardians.

Size & Appearance
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Slender and athletic, Klee Kais come in three size variations (toy, miniature, and standard), ranging from 4.5-10 kg and 33-43 cm tall. They have a sharp, Husky-like face with a distinct mask and fluffy tail.

🔸 Schipperke – More compact and sturdy, Schipperkes typically weigh 4-9 kg and stand 25-33 cm tall. They have a solid black coat, a mischievous fox-like face, and often lack a tail (due to historical docking traditions).

Temperament & Personality
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Intelligent, affectionate, but reserved with strangers. They form strong bonds with their owners but can be shy and aloof in new situations. Known for their Husky-like howls and talkative nature.

🔸 Schipperke – Bold, confident, and independent. Schipperkes are natural watchdogs with a big-dog attitude in a small package. They are curious, mischievous, and love being the center of attention.

Trainability & Intelligence
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Highly intelligent but stubborn, requiring firm and positive reinforcement training. They excel in agility and obedience but may have a strong independent streak.

🔸 Schipperke – Also highly intelligent but with a mind of their own. They are quick learners but can be stubborn and strong-willed, requiring patient and consistent training.

Exercise & Energy Levels
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – High-energy, loves running and outdoor activities. Requires daily exercise, mental stimulation, and secure fencing due to their escape artist tendencies.

🔸 Schipperke – Also high-energy but thrives on mental challenges as much as physical activity. Loves exploring, problem-solving, and staying engaged with their environment.

Grooming & Shedding
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Double-coated with seasonal shedding (prepare for fur storms). Requires regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons.

🔸 Schipperke – Dense double coat but lower shedding compared to the Klee Kai. Regular brushing keeps their coat looking sleek, and they’re naturally clean dogs.

Suitability for Families & Other Pets
🔹 Alaskan Klee Kai – Great for active families but can be reserved with children and strangers. May be prone to separation anxiety if left alone too long.

🔸 Schipperke – Confident and lively, often good with children but can be territorial. Can be bossy with other pets, so early socialization is key.

Which Breed is Right for You?
🏡 Pick the Alaskan Klee Kai if… You want an active, affectionate dog that thrives on companionship and structured activities but can be a bit shy with strangers.

🛡 Pick the Schipperke if… You want a fearless, independent watchdog with a big personality, one who’s always on alert and ready for adventure.

Both breeds are small but mighty—so which one would you choose? Drop a ❤️ for Alaskan Klee Kai or 👍 for Schipperke in the comments!

Shiba Inu vs Alaskan Klee Kai – A Comparison of Two Compact, Intelligent Breeds

The Shiba Inu and Alaskan Klee Kai are both small, fox-like breeds known for their intelligence, independence, and striking appearances. While they may share some physical similarities, they differ significantly in temperament, training difficulty, and suitability as companion dogs.

Origins & Breed Purpose
The Shiba Inu hails from Japan, where it was originally bred for hunting small game. It’s one of Japan’s oldest native breeds and has a reputation for being alert, confident, and highly independent.
The Alaskan Klee Kai, developed in the United States, was bred to resemble a miniature Husky while being better suited to family life. Unlike the Shiba, it was designed as a companion dog rather than a working breed.

Size & Appearance
Shiba Inu: Compact and muscular, Shibas typically weigh 8-11 kg and stand 35-43 cm tall. They have a curled tail, dense double coat, and fox-like face with an expressive, bold gaze.
Alaskan Klee Kai: Slightly smaller, Klee Kais come in three size variations (toy, miniature, and standard), ranging from 4.5-10 kg and 33-43 cm in height. They resemble a miniature Husky, with a more slender frame, sharp facial markings, and an expressive mask.

Temperament & Personality
Shiba Inu: Known for being independent, stubborn, and aloof, the Shiba Inu is a breed that enjoys affection on its own terms. They are confident dogs that don’t always seek validation from their owners, making them more cat-like in temperament.
Alaskan Klee Kai: More affectionate and loyal, Klee Kais are often reserved with strangers but form strong bonds with their families. They can be more vocal than Shibas, displaying Husky-like chatter and howls, and they require plenty of mental stimulation to stay engaged.

Trainability & Intelligence
Shiba Inu: Highly intelligent but not easily trainable, as they tend to be strong-willed and independent thinkers. They require firm, consistent training from an experienced owner and can be challenging for first-time dog owners.
Alaskan Klee Kai: Also intelligent but more eager to please, making them slightly easier to train. However, they can still be stubborn and mischievous, requiring firm guidance and positive reinforcement.

Exercise & Energy Levels
Shiba Inu: Moderate energy levels, needing daily walks and mental stimulation. They enjoy playtime and exploration but don’t require the same intensity of exercise as Huskies or working breeds.
Alaskan Klee Kai: Higher energy levels, requiring more exercise than a Shiba. They thrive on running, agility training, and interactive play, making them better suited to active households.

Grooming & Shedding
Shiba Inu: Heavy seasonal shedders, requiring regular brushing but low-maintenance overall. They are naturally clean and often groom themselves like cats.
Alaskan Klee Kai: Also double-coated with significant shedding, but with longer and softer fur, requiring more frequent brushing to prevent matting.

Suitability for Families & Other Pets
Shiba Inu: Best suited for experienced owners who appreciate a confident, independent dog. Can be aloof with children and strangers but forms strong bonds with its owner.
Alaskan Klee Kai: More family-friendly, forming strong attachments with their owners. However, they can be reserved with strangers and may be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long periods.

Which Breed is Right for You?
If you want a strong-willed, independent companion that requires minimal pampering and enjoys their own space, the Shiba Inu might be your best match.
If you prefer a more affectionate, high-energy dog that thrives on companionship and structured activity, the Alaskan Klee Kai is a better fit.

Both breeds are intelligent and stunning, but they require owners who understand their unique temperaments. If you're after a dog that respects you but doesn’t need constant attention, the Shiba Inu is the way to go. If you prefer an active, loyal companion that thrives in an interactive home, the Alaskan Klee Kai is the better choice.

Pomskies and Alaskan Klee Kais are both small, energetic, and intelligent dogs with striking Husky-like features, but they come from different backgrounds and have distinct traits.

A **Pomsky** is a **designer breed**, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. Because of this mix, their size, coat, and temperament can vary quite a bit, depending on genetics. Generally, Pomskies are playful, affectionate, and social, but they can also inherit the Pomeranian’s stubborn streak. They tend to be **more companion-oriented**, often forming strong bonds with their owners and thriving in engaged, interactive households.

On the other hand, the **Alaskan Klee Kai** is a **purebred miniature Husky**, selectively bred to retain the Husky’s intelligence and agility in a smaller package. Unlike Pomskies, Klee Kais have **consistent breed standards**, including three size variations (toy, miniature, and standard). They’re known for their **aloof nature**, often wary of strangers, making them excellent watchdogs. They’re highly intelligent, active, and independent, requiring both **mental and physical stimulation** to stay happy.

In short, if you’re after a **playful, affectionate, and social** dog with a bit of unpredictability in size and looks, a **Pomsky** might be the way to go. If you prefer a **smart, agile, and loyal** yet **more reserved** dog with a **predictable** size and temperament, the **Alaskan Klee Kai** could be a better fit. Either way, both breeds require committed owners who can keep up with their energy and intelligence!

Preventing Shyness & Anxiety

🚨 Is your Alaskan Klee Kai a little too "aloof" with strangers? 🚨
Don’t worry—this is normal for the breed, but early socialization is key to preventing fear and anxiety! 🐾

✅ Expose your pup to different sounds, places, and people.
✅ Use treats & praise to reward calm behavior.
✅ Organize playdates with friendly dogs.
✅ Never force interactions—let them approach at their own pace.

🔍 PRO TIP: Puppy socialization classes can work wonders!

The first week Sheila joined our family, we decided to take her to Melbourne Docklands Beach (our closest beach).

It was a beautiful evening, and we hoped the beach would help her settle in. Sheila has the softest fur, which is perfect for cuddling, but you can see from the photo how unsure she was after her journey across the world.

She seemed to relax a bit as we were walking. But then, a car alarm went off. In a panic, Sheila managed to slip out of her harness and took off across the beach. I found myself chasing after her, in the dark, my heart racing as I called her name.

Thankfully, I caught up with her, but we've tried a few harnesses since then and she is a little escape artist! Whether she is harnessed in the back seat on a drive or once when we tried to get her into the vet, her soft fur is like butter and she's gotten out of them all!

A few harnesses later I came across the one we've stuck with, she's chewed her way out of one of them, on the long drive from Adelaide to Melbourne. But that's because it hangs loose when not under tension then tightens up when she pulls on the lead, so I don't have to worry when we're out for a walk.

If you have a little escape artist give this harness a go:
