The Animal Referral Hospital Wollongong recently came to the aid of a very unique and precious patient from Symbio Wildlife Park in Helensburgh. "Moderna" the Little Penguin had been battling a fungal respiratory infection for several months and was thankfully making a slow but steady recovery under the guidance of her veterinary team. However, “Moderna” needed the "all-clear" that her infection had resolved before she was placed back with her colony. The Australian little penguin Eudyptula novaehollandiae, one of 18 penguin species in the world, is the only Penguin native to Australia and can be found on islands and some mainland areas around the coastline from Perth around the southern end of Australia and up to Coffs Harbour.

Little penguins are very social birds and rely heavily on behavioural interactions amongst each other for their mental and physical wellbeing, so it was crucial to “Moderna's” welfare to be able to assimilate her back with the group as quickly as possible. And that's where the ARH Wollongong stepped in to help! Veterinarian Dr Ashley Sykes and Veterinary Nurse Aimee Fuller performed a CT on an anaesthetised “Moderna” using state-of-the art equipment at the Animal Referral Hospital in Wollongong. The delicate procedure went extremely well, and the results indicated that “Moderna” had no active infection and was safe to go back with her colony, where she is now happily thriving with all her fellow penguins.

Whilst many of our team members love snakes, we have already seen several pets come into our clinic in the last few weeks after being bitten by a venomous snake including red bellied black snakes and even a tiger snake!

One such patient is Arlow a handsome 11 year old tabby cat. Arlow's mum called our hospital late one night a few weeks ago after returning home to find 2 small holes surrounded by blood on one of Arlow's legs' and the leg was already starting to swell. Arlow had been outside for about 6hrs and whilst his Mum thought it may have been a dog bite, our staff actually clued onto the fact that Arlow may have been bitten by a snake. As it turns out, Arlow lives right near a creek (snakes are often found near a water source as they need to drink water) and his Mum has seen a red bellied black snake in the area before.

Arlow's Mum brought him straight into the hospital at the thought of a potential snake bite and whilst Arlow was still quite bright, an initial blood test for CK (creatine kinase) levels showed that these were quite elevated which is in fact a pretty telling sign that Arlow had in fact been bitten by a snake.

Arlow was admitted into hospital where he received snake antivenom, fluid therapy, pain relief, and ongoing care. Arlow is one of the lucky ones and after 5 days with us, he was able to go home much to the relief of his family.

☀️𝐖𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝☀️

Our hospital will be open all the way through to 8am Tuesday 7/10/25 for all of your pet emergency needs.

As an emergency hospital, we don’t take appointments so you can come down at any time but we would appreciate a phone call to let us know ahead of your arrival on 0242838432

- It is ILLEGAL for our hospital to dispense medications for a pet that hasn’t been to us in the last 6 months for the condition requiring the medication you have run out of. If you run out of your pet’s medications and you are unable to contact your vet to dispense more, we can definitely help but your pet must come in for a consultation FIRST. We can assure you this a LEGAL requirement

- We operate on a ‘triage-based system’ and therefore whilst your pet is waiting to be seen by a vet, another pet could rush in ahead of you. We appreciate your understanding if this occurs

- We are unable to take in uninjured stray animals as we simply don’t have the room and capacity to do so. We are happy to scan a pet for a microchip if you’ve found one roaming but if the pet is not microchipped/details on the chip aren’t up to date/we are unable to contact an owner, we will be unable to keep the animal and you will need to take it with you and call council to request a ranger collect it from you directly

Last week we saw all 3 of the dogs mentioned above in our clinic after hours as they had all gotten into a bathroom bin at home and eaten one of their owners' used tampons!

At our hospital we honestly see this so often and in fact this can lead to a life threatening situation if they don't come in and vomit up the offending item. Tampons are designed to absorb as much fluid as possible and swell in size just like a sponge. Tampons won't break down with stomach acid and once they pass from the stomach into the intestines they are guaranteed to become stuck due to their swollen size which means the only way to remove them is invasive surgery into their abdomen. Not only that but they can cause a toxuc reaction from the bacteria in a used tampon.

Our pets don't think of the consequences when they do things and will happily ingest tampons, sanitary pads, condoms, and nappies/diapers.

It is important to remember to have a lockable bin in your bathroom if you have indoor pets as they won't think twice about eating things that they shouldn't and getting themselves into a spot of bother and don't forget to call us immediately if you've found that your fur babies have eaten anything naughty 🤓

*Featured are two of the naughty doggos we saw last week and always shared with the owner's permission*
