- It is ILLEGAL for our hospital to dispense medications for a pet that hasnโ€™t been to us in the last 6 months for the condition requiring the medication you have run out of. If you run out of your petโ€™s medications and you are unable to contact your vet to dispense more, we can definitely help but your pet must come in for a consultation FIRST. We can assure you this a LEGAL requirement

- We operate on a โ€˜triage-based systemโ€™ and therefore whilst your pet is waiting to be seen by a vet, another pet could rush in ahead of you. We appreciate your understanding if this occurs

- We are unable to take in uninjured stray animals as we simply donโ€™t have the room and capacity to do so. We are happy to scan a pet for a microchip if youโ€™ve found one roaming but if the pet is not microchipped/details on the chip arenโ€™t up to date/we are unable to contact an owner, we will be unable to keep the animal and you will need to take it with you and call council to request a ranger collect it from you directly

๐Ÿ‡ Christmas advice #2 - No grapes, sultanas or raisins1

Even a small amount can be lethal to dogs as it can cause acute kidney failure.

While they donโ€™t know what the toxic substance in grapes is, veterinarians do agree that it is both the flesh and the skin that can be toxic to dogs.

Because we don't know the exact mechanism that causes a dog to react to grapes/raisins/sultanas, we also don't know why some dogs can tolerate them while others end up in kidney failure. We do however know that dogs can develop a toxicity to grapes/raisins/sultanas over time, so just because they have eaten them before, doesn't mean they will continue to be unaffected.

We recommend playing it safe at Christmas and sticking with store bought doggy treats for your beloved.

Too often we see dogs coming into our hospital after they were left unattended and opened a wrapped box of chocolates from under a Christmas tree.

A typical dog's nose is around 1000 times stronger than a human - this is why dogs are trained to sniff things out of hidden places. That being said, a bit of wrapping paper, plastic and cardboard is definitely not enough to keep a dog out so remember if it's an an edible gift that you're giving to someone you care for this Christmas, keep it well out of reach of your pooches ๐Ÿ˜€

Due to the rise in cases of parvovirus across Australia, the AVA is reminding owners to make sure their dogs are up-to-date with their vaccinations to protect them from the highly contagious and potentially fatal disease.

All puppies from six weeks of age should be vaccinated against parvovirus and other canine diseases. Follow-up vaccinations are also required, and your local veterinarians can advise on the best type of protection for your area.

If you are unsure of your petโ€™s vaccination status you should contact your veterinarian for advice.

Avaโ€™s family became concerned when in late September/early October this year, 6yr old Ava started coughing out of the blue. At first Avaโ€™s family thought she may have kennel cough which is very common amongst dogs and highly contagious however after a few days of this she not only didnโ€™t improve but she began to get worse. Ava started to vomit after every meal and became very lethargic like she had been medicated with sedatives. It was at this time that Ava was taken to her local vet clinic, North Nowra Vet Hospital.

Avaโ€™s primary care team were also wondering what was going on with her and questioned whether she could have potentially been bitten by a snake, some type of blockage caused by foreign material stuck in her intestines, or even horrifically they thought she may have been poisoned. Ava underwent several blood tests which all came back NORMAL which further confused everyone caring for her and her family. Ava went home for a couple of days but after no improvement, Ava went back to North Nowra Vet Hospital who did some extensive research and came to the conclusion that they suspected that Ava was suffering from a very rare condition known as myasthenia gravis.

When Avaโ€™s family heard of this disease they started doing some reading of their own and many of the symptoms made sense; the muscles in her face had slowly become paralysed making it difficult for Ava to blink which is extremely rare and because of this the muscles in her face began to waste away which often led to her eyes rolling and appearing to โ€˜sinkโ€™ into her head which her owners say was very scary indeed. Another symptom of the condition is megaesophagus which causes the esophagus to enlarge and lose its ability to move food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach and therefore anything ingested is regurgitated/vomited straight back up.

The treatment for myasthenia gravis is in fact a medicine prescribed to humans and isnโ€™t usually stocked at pharmacies so had to be ordered in for Ava. Due to the delay in being able to obtain the medications, Ava was on a tight time frame to start her treatment and as her regular vet clinic isnโ€™t open 24/7, thatโ€™s where our hospital stepped in. Avaโ€™s family called our hospital on a Saturday afternoon and told us that they had purchased the required medications and that they needed Ava admitted into 24/7 care to start the treatment trial. Luckily, Avaโ€™s family were able to contact someone at North Nowra Vet Hospital out of ours and their amazing team sent through all of Avaโ€™s notes to us ready for her arrival and so we could follow the treatment plan required.

Ava stayed in our hospital for 48 hours to begin her medication trial and even though there was some improvement, many of Avaโ€™s symptoms remained and managing them wasnโ€™t easy. Ava went home and continued her medications but unfortunately despite trying everything recommended to them, the megaesophagus symptoms were very persistent meaning that Ava simply wasnโ€™t getting the nutrients from the food she was eating or keeping water down which would keep her hydrated.

Avaโ€™s family are heartbroken but have decided to make the difficult decision to have Ava euthanased to end her continued deterioration and she will grow her wings this week.

Avaโ€™s family are happy for us to share her story in the hope that it may help another pet owner that finds their dog unwell and unsure what may be causing the illness. Our team wish Avaโ€™s family our warm regards, we know she is a very loved girl and will be dearly missed by all ๐Ÿ’Ÿ

We shared this post below 2 MONTHS but the message isnโ€™t getting across to EVERYONE.

We are seeing MULTIPLE tick cases in our hospital every single week because pets are not on tick prevention and we are devastated to say that they havenโ€™t all made it ๐Ÿ˜”

Itโ€™s simple; if you have an outdoor dog or cat, they MUST be on tick prevention and that includes pets that donโ€™t even leave your backyard. Ticks travel on our wildlife into backyards too and itโ€™s a common misconception that pets that never leave the property are safe.

Oreo the rabbit had been visiting his regular vet clinic who determined that he had some very large bladder stones that required surgical removal. Unfortunately for Oreo he became very unwell and lethargic the night before he was booked in for his surgery so his family rushed him straight down.

Oreo was admitted into our hospital under the care of Dr Joe who ascertained that Oreo needed some urgent relief for a very full bladder which was blocked due to the stones. The procedure was performed under sedation and upon waking up, Oreo was immediately back to his normal self!

Oreo's family has since sent us a lovely update which we would love to share with you;

3yr old Alby was referred to our hospital by his regular vet clinic recently after he got himself into a very precarious and dangerous situation.

Alby had been chewing on a bone and swallowed a piece that was too big and too sharp to actually go all the way down to his stomach. The piece of bone got stuck in Alby's oesophagus just above the cardia/lower oesophageal sphincter. Alby knew something was very wrong and the normally energetic bull terrier took himself to his owners and sat quietly in front of them. As they had seen this strange reaction whilst he'd been eating the bone they instinctively suspected the worst and rushed him to their local vet clinic where x-rays were performed which confirmed the lodgment of the bone and the difficult area that it had become stuck.

As Alby's vet didn't have the specialised equipment required to remove the bone from this very unusual location, they called our hospital and arrangements were made for Alby to immediately come over and have an endoscope performed as the safest way to try and remove the piece of bone.

In a turn of luck for Alby, the bone came out quite easily during the endoscope procedure without leaving too much damage to his oesophagus so he was discharged a couple of hours after the procedure with some medications to protect the area while it heals. Alby was one very grateful boy and a delight to share some cuddles with ๐Ÿงก

9 week old Oaka presented to us on a Tuesday evening after her mum noticed an egg-size swelling on the right hand side of her neck just under her jaw. When our team opened her mouth we could see some type of discharge from the area so Oaka was admitted into the hospital for sedation and a thorough examination of the area. There was a small hole found at the back of Oaka's mouth and some foreign material was removed by the vet which turned out to be some tree-fern that Oaka had been chewing on the day before. Oaka was sent home with some anti-inflammatories and antibiotics and told to behave herself.

Less than 24hrs later and little Oaka was back but this time it was a very different matter. Oaka had sneakily eaten a piece of bone the day before that was given to another of her canine friends and when she vomited on the Wednesday morning her Mum knew that the bone had likely caused an issue and took her immediately into her regular vet clinic. It was agreed that Oaka required surgery and low and behold, her regular vet removed a sharp piece of bone from her stomach that hadn't broken down and had the potential to cause some serious issues when trying to pass through her intestines. Oaka recovered well from her surgery but it was agreed that she should return to our hospital in the afternoon after her surgery so she could be hospitalised overnight and monitored for 24hrs before going home.

Oaka is one cheeky pup who loves nothing more than chewing things she shouldn't and cuddles with anyone who will give them to her. Hopefully this little girl keeps her nose out of trouble from now on ๐Ÿฉถ

Young Winnie came into us after her Mum found that she had a stick lodged in the roof of her mouth. Winnieโ€™s Mum mentioned that sheโ€™d noticed she had smelly breath for the last couple of days and had been eating less and tonight had happened to see a stick lodged where it shouldnโ€™t be so brought Winnie straight into our hospital.

Luckily for Winnie, our team was able to remove the stick without sedation and she proceeded to take treats from one of our nurses immediately afterwards. Winnie went home with some antibiotics and anti inflammatories as the stick did leave an open wound in her mouth but she should be back to her normal self in no time!

During spring it is natural for all animals to be more active in their hunt to find a 'mate'. Many of our native animals are a lot more active between dusk and dawn and with no road sense, they don't think twice before crossing a busy road to find a partner to reproduce.

Animals such as the kangaroo, wallaby, koala, wombat, possum, and echidna are naturally more active between dusk and dawn but sightings are a lot more common close to main roads during this time. Unfortunately most don't stand a chance against vehicles particularly those travelling at 100km p/hr so it's up to us to be mindful of our wildlife and keep a keen eye when driving during these hours.

If you do accidentally hit something, it is a legal requirement to stop at the scene of an accident. If there is anyway that you can transport injured wildlife to us, we are happy to accept them. Simply call 02 4283 8432 if you have injured wildlife in your car and our staff will assist you with directions to our clinic. Alternatively, if you are unable to move the animal yourself please call WIRES on 1300 094 737 (please remember that WIRES is a volunteer based organisation and whilst they will make every effort to assist you there is no guarantee that they are able to have someone attend to you immediately)

Whilst we do love learning about our unusual and quirky native wildlife, we'd much rather see them from fit and healthy from a distance in the wild than injured in our clinic๐Ÿจ๐Ÿฆ”

10 month old Lola was brought into our hospital on a Sunday night after her Mum found that she had eaten 400mg of ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs and can cause kidney damage and even anaemia from bleeding stomach ulcers!

Luckily for little Lola, she had a vomit in our clinic and was able to go home after a cuddle with Dr Joe.

If ever your pet ingests ibuprofen, give us a call and head straight down ๐Ÿ’Š
