They are not able to digest or metabolise many human foods and as a result they can cause illness in your furry friend.

Following on from yesterday’s post about the dangers of ill fitting harnesses, here’s a good illustration of how the dachshund skeleton looks when striding out.

You will see how far the reach forward is and therefore the importance of having free shoulder movement.

If you are using a harness make sure the straps do not hinder this motion.

Dachshunds have lungs that are large for a small dog and they have a barrel-like chest. Because of these things, Dachshunds have a loud, deep bark that sounds as though it comes from a much larger dog.

They needed strong lungs and a deep barrel chest so that they could breathe more easily when burrowing underground. This of course is what they were bred for, to flush out badgers, rabbits, rats or other small creatures from underground tunnels and burrows.

This capacity to be particularly vocal is what enables them to be such good hunting dogs, so if you ever wondered why your dachshund doesn’t have a sharp yap like some other small dogs, this will explain it.

Facebook groups are littered with reports of mouldy Meals For Mutts at the moment so if you feed this dry food, I recommend that you have a really good look inside the bag and make sure you're not feeding your dog dangerous mould that can make your dog very sick immediately or over a period of time - empty the entire bag.

Apparently, there is a recall on a batch number according to consumer comments but I can’t find that info on their website.

When we choose to feed commercial diets to our dogs, there is a risk associated with that whether that be in processing, transport or storage - these things happen and as long as they don't keep happening as consumers we can often forgive and move on - M4M are using a new manufacturer and this could be some teething issues, who knows but right now, this is about dogs health so please check the entire contents of your bag.

IVDD is covered for illness only and she said can be age related, if IVDD is started from an accident (what's an accident. Falling down stairs, jumping off the bed? Erin advised that accident or illness will be determined by the vet report) then it won't be covered.

Did you know?
1. The gestation period for dogs is usually 63 days or 9 weeks.
2. Some dogs can suffer from morning sickness and will vomit in the early stages of pregnancy
3. Other symptoms of pregnancy are increased tiredness and more affectionate behaviour
4. An ultrasound scan can be done at 3 weeks to confirm pregnancy
5. An x ray can be taken about a week before the birth which will give a more accurate indication of how many puppies to expect
6. The expectant mother will start "nesting" a few days before the birth
7. Miniature dachshunds will have on average 3 or 4 puppies whilst Standard dachshunds can have much bigger litters, sometimes 8 or 9 puppies

A Dachshund Warranty?

Dear Customer,
Congratulations on acquiring your dachshund. Although your dachshund comes fully assembled, due to particular issues during production, we do occasionally have issues with components such as screws. They invariably are either loose or missing altogether.

Please find the instructions for your particular model listed below:

Mode 1: This is the sleep mode, activated for the majority of the day as the dachshund ages. This is normal and you should not worry about it, just accept the peace and quiet while you can.

Mode 2: Anarchy. Although we have tried to ease the effect of anarchy mode, it’s not always possible. There are inherent issues with the timer settings of anarchy mode in regards to there being none. Should your dachshund suddenly go from comatose to running around the walls, we cannot stop this feature.

Sunlight: Do not allow your dachshund to stay in the sun too long. They can burn if left unattended but they also recharge. Too much of a charge and mode 2 can be activated without warning.

Energy consumption: This has been an ongoing issue as their energy consumption is too direct. We have tried to put baffles, non return valves and diversions in place but none seem to work adequately. Safe to say what goes in comes out, in both solids and gas. The gas, although noxious, can only inhibit breathing of the owner for up to ten minutes.

Naming: Your dachshund comes untitled as we feel owners should use names of their own. If you are unsure, we have listed below a few names our owners like to use:

Software: Your dachshund is pre-installed with the highest software and hardware. This includes the loyalty chip, the love every one chip, fun chip and, of course, the highly popular mayhem chip. They are all running on the Whatthehell operating system 12.2. Although this has been in circulation for many years, we have found it simply cannot be improved upon.

Puppy update: Over the weekend Missi left our home to join her new family the Stevens & has gone to live happily ever after with sister Evi & Dusti dog too.

Thank you so much to the Stevens family for making the trip up & bringing Evi as well as Dusti & the kids along to. It was wonderful catching up with you all & to see how Evi has grown & developed. You have an amazing job raising her & we are delighted in knowing Missi will have a wonderful life with her sister.

If you’ve had a puppy then you’ve gone through the teething stage. Lots of chewing from those sharp little baby teeth! It’s always good when their adult teeth come through and they have a full set of healthy teeth.

Make sure to maintain dental hygiene by giving them raw bones once or twice a week to chew on, or even dentalstix. All these should be given under supervision so your pup doesn’t choke.

Teeth cleaning can be done by your vet but it requires a general anesthetic and is expensive. Pet stores do sell doggy toothpaste and little finger brushes you can use to clean your dogs teeth with. If you start them off young they will soon get used to it.
