Preparing Your Dog for Thunderstorms

It’s rainy season and at this time of year it’s not just hurricanes that bother our furry friends. Thunderstorms can be stressful for dogs, but with a little preparation, you can help yours stay calm and safe. Here are some tips:

🌩️ Stay Informed: Regularly check the weather forecast. If bad weather is coming, plan to stay home with your dog.

🚶‍♂️ Postpone Walks: Some dogs can sense approaching storms and may become anxious. A microchip is one way to identify your pet in case he/she gets lost. .

🏠 Create a Safe Space: Prepare a cozy, enclosed area with their favourite toys, blankets, and an item of your clothing to make them feel secure.

🔊 Provide Background Noise: Turn on the TV or radio or a white noise machine. This can help muffle the sounds of the storm.

🔒 Secure Your Home: Close blinds and curtains to limit lightning flashes and check for potential escape routes.

😌 Stay Calm: Your dog looks to you for cues. Stay calm and act normally. Never shout at your dog if they become destructive; this only increases their stress.

💊 Talk Meds: Speak to your vet about specific medication to help keep them calm: your vets at Central vet can prescribe a combination of medications that will help your pet(s) stay calm and safe during bad weather or a storm.

By taking these steps, you can help your dog weather the storm with a little more ease. 🐾❤️
