1. There are 10,000 species of bird.
There are around 10,000 different species of bird.

They range from big to small, and are lots of different colours!

How many different birds can you spot?

2. All birds lay eggs.
All female birds lay eggs.
Their baby birds then hatch out of the shells when they are ready.

If you look up into the trees, you might be able to see a nest.

Birds make these so that they have a safe and warm place to keep their eggs.

3. Birds migrate to other countries.
A lot of birds migrate which means, depending on the season, they fly elsewhere.

If their food is running low, they need to find it somewhere else to live!

Around 4,000 birds migrate.

4. All birds have feathers!
All birds have feathers and they are very useful for lots of different reasons.

Feathers help birds to fly. They help to control the wind when flying through the air.

They also keep birds warm in the winter!

Did you know that birds also use their feathers to show off?

A peac**k does exactly this! A peac**k will show all of his feathers to attract a mate.

5. Birds don’t have teeth.
Birds don’t have teeth which means they have to swallow food whole.

They have an organ called a gizzard which grinds up their food.

This then helps them to digest it properly.

6. Birds are great communicators.
Birds chirp and sing.

They do this for lots of different reasons.

One of the reasons is to attract a mate.

Another reason is to warn other birds of danger.

They also do it to scare off predators!

7. A group of birds is called a flock.
A flock of birds is a large group of birds from the same species.

They stay very close together.

It is believed they do this as they are safer from predators when they are in a group.

When they are in a flock they are usually travelling together or looking for food.

Crows and ravens can also do it… although wild ones haven’t had much practice.

9. Ostriches have the largest eyes in any mammal on land.
As well as their large eyes… they also lay the largest eggs.

…AND they are the largest bird!

10. The smallest bird is a Bee Hummingbird.

It can grow from 5 to 6.1 centimeters.

Have a look on your ruler to see how small that is!

About Birds
Birds are vertebrate animals adapted for flight.

Many can also run, jump, swim, and dive. Some, like penguins, have lost the ability to fly but retained their wings. Birds are found worldwide and in all habitats. The largest is the nine-foot-tall ostrich. The smallest is the two-inch-long bee hummingbird.

Everything about the anatomy of a bird reflects its ability to fly. The wings, for example, are shaped to create lift. The leading edge is thicker than the back edge, and they are covered in feathers that narrow to a point. Airplane wings are modeled after bird wings.

The bones and muscles of the wing are also highly specialized. The main bone, the humerus, which is similar to the upper arm of a mammal, is hollow instead of solid. It also connects to the bird’s air sac system, which, in turn, connects to its lungs. The powerful flight muscles of the shoulder attach to the keel, a special ridge of bone that runs down the center of the wide sternum, or breastbone. The tail feathers are used for steering.

Birds have a unique digestive system that allows them to eat when they can—usually on the fly—and digest later. They use their beaks to grab and swallow food. Even the way a bird reproduces is related to flight. Instead of carrying the extra weight of developing young inside their bodies, they lay eggs and incubate them in a nest.

The fossil record shows that birds evolved alongside the dinosaurs during the Jurassic period 160 million years ago. The best known fossil is archaeopteryx, which was about the size of a crow.

Pictured below are the nine different species within the genus of Agapornis. These nine species are classified into three groups;

• Sexually dimorphic group (differences in the appearance of the c**k’s and hen’s plumage):
-> Canus
-> Taranta
-> Pullarius

• Transitional group (no apparent difference between male and female):
-> Swindernianus
-> Roseicollis (roseicollis is the most popular lovebird and this species also has the highest number of mutations)

• Personatus group (all members of this group have the typical white eye ring. In this group there is also no apparent difference between c**k and hen):
-> Personatus
-> Fischeri
-> Nigrigenis
-> Lilianae
