🎓✨ We’re proud to share that Elien is now officially FES Certified in Equine Chiropractic!

After two years of intensive training with Focus on the Equine Spine (FES), she has deepened her expertise in the equine axial skeleton, spinal biomechanics and manual treatment techniques.

This certification adds a valuable dimension to her clinical assessments — allowing for even more precise diagnosis and targeted treatment of back-related performance issues. 🐎💡

Elien now integrates chiropractic techniques alongside her daily work as an equine veterinarian, offering a more complete approach to equine health and performance.

🐴 Welkom, Manon! 🩺✨

De komende maanden verwelkomen we met veel enthousiasme dierenarts Manon Asselberghs in ons team! Zij zal tijdelijk inspringen tijdens het zwangerschapsverlof van onze collega Mounia.

Manon is een spontane en gepassioneerde dierenarts met een groot hart voor paarden. Met de nodige expertise, zorg én liefde zal ze jullie viervoeters omringen alsof het de hare zijn. 💕🐎

📌 Knie-luxatie met ruptuur van de mediale collateraalband
Bij dit paard werd een volledige luxatie van het kniegewricht vastgesteld, gepaard met een ruptuur van de mediale collateraalband. Deze band speelt een essentiële rol in de stabiliteit van het kniegewricht.

Dergelijke letsels zijn zeldzaam, maar hebben doorgaans een zeer slechte prognose, zeker bij volwassen paarden.

📌 Luxation du grasset avec rupture du ligament collatéral médial
Chez ce cheval, une luxation complète de l'articulation du genou a été diagnostiquée, accompagnée d'une rupture du ligament collatéral médial. Ce ligament joue un rôle essentiel dans la stabilité de l'articulation du genou.
De telles lésions sont rares, mais présentent généralement un très mauvais pronostic, surtout chez les chevaux adultes.

📌 Stifle luxation with rupture of the medial collateral ligament
In this horse, a complete luxation of the stifle joint was diagnosed, accompanied by a rupture of the medial collateral ligament. This ligament plays a crucial role in maintaining stifle joint stability.
Such injuries are rare but generally carry a very poor prognosis, especially in adult horses.

📍 Diagnose: subchondrale botcyste in de mediale femurcondyl (binnenzijde van de knie).⠀
Dit is "een holte" in het bot net onder het kraakbeenoppervlak, vaak ontstaan tijdens de ontwikkeling van het gewricht (denk aan osteochondrose) of door een vroeg letsel.
⠀
🔬 Zo’n cyste veroorzaakt pijn door druk op het omliggende bot of door ontsteking in het gewricht.
⠀
💡 Afhankelijk van de grootte en locatie van de cyste kiezen we voor gerichte therapie: medicatie, inspuitingen of soms chirurgie.

📍 Diagnosis: subchondral bone cyst in the medial femoral condyle (inside part of the stifle joint).
This is "a cavity" in the bone just beneath the cartilage surface, often due to developmental issues (like osteochondrosis) or early trauma.

🔬 The cyst can cause pain by increasing pressure in the bone or triggering joint inflammation.

📍 Diagnostic : kyste osseux sous-chondral dans le condyle fémoral médial (face interne du grasset).

Il s’agit d’une "cavité" dans l’os juste sous le cartilage, souvent liée à un trouble du développement (comme l’ostéochondrose).

🔬 Ce type de kyste peut provoquer de la douleur à cause de la pression osseuse ou d’une inflammation articulaire.
⠀
💡 Selon sa taille et sa localisation, le traitement peut aller du repos aux injections articulaires, voire à une chirurgie.

🔎 OCD van de laterale femurkam bij het paard
Een ontwikkelingsstoornis die we regelmatig zien bij jonge paarden — vaak met grotere gevolgen dan op het eerste gezicht lijkt.

📍 Wat is het?
Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is een verstoring in de omzetting van kraakbeen naar bot. In de knie kan dit leiden tot losse fragmenten of kraakbeenflappen.

🧠 Symptomen?
Soms is het een toevallige bevinding bij een RX-screening. Maar in veel gevallen zijn er al duidelijke signalen bij het veulen:
🔸 zwelling ter hoogte van het kniegewricht
🔸 Kreupelheid

🚨 Vroege detectie is cruciaal!
Hoe groter het fragment, hoe minder gunstig de prognose voor een succesvolle sportcarrière. Het is vaak ook aangewezen de kniegewrichten van veulens vroeger te screenen. Extreem grote fragmenten kunnen zelfs blijvende gewrichtsschade veroorzaken.

👀 Opletten dus bij veulens: gewrichtszwelling en manken zijn nooit ‘normaal in de groei’.

🔎 OCD of the lateral femoral ridge in horses
A developmental disorder we regularly see in young horses — often with more impact than it may seem at first.

📍 What is it?
Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is a disturbance in the conversion of cartilage to bone. In the stifle joint, this can lead to loose fragments or cartilage flaps.

🧠 Symptoms?
Sometimes it’s an incidental finding during X-ray screening. But often, there are already clear signs in foals:
🔸 swelling around the stifle joint
🔸 lameness

🚨 Early detection is key!
The larger the fragment, the less favorable the prognosis for a successful athletic career. That’s why early screening of the stifle joints in foals is often recommended.
Extremely large fragments can even lead to permanent joint damage.

👀 Pay close attention: joint swelling and lameness in foals are never “just part of growing up.”
