To rug or not to rug. 🤔
Ik heb al verschillende discussies zien passeren, dus heb ik beslist om mijn aanpak hier even neer te zetten en daar is dan de kous mee af. 💁🏼♀️ Deze post is dan ook alles wat ik er dit jaar over te zeggen heb.
Gebruik ik dekens? Ja.
Hebben mijn paarden nu al een deken op? Ja, ‘s nachts. Drie van de vier tenminste. En twee daarvan gaan overdag gewoon nog lekker af.
Waarom? Ik heb mijn paarden graag comfortabel (en mijn geschoren Hummer graag een beetje NIET modderig 🙄). Mijn paarden hebben geen overgewicht, en aan de opstaande vacht te zien vanmorgen, hadden ze het toch een beetje frisjes.
Comfort. Want dat is wat ik mijn paarden wil geven. En op dit moment is dat onder de vorm van een dekentje zonder vulling.
Zij zijn er blij mee. En ik ook. Klaar, dus. 🤷🏼♀️

If you want to rug your horse, and you aren’t putting a 300g rug on in 15 degrees, then rug your horse. You are not being “cruel” if your horse occasionally gets a bit warm for a few hours in a rug, because it was cold when you turned him out.
Occasionally, my horses are in the wrong rugs, and, shock horror, even come in a bit sweaty. I take the rug off, apologise to them (this part is essential), and they forgive me whilst they cool off again. They don’t die. Likewise, sometimes I put them out in fly rugs, and whilst I’m at work, it chucks down and they get a bit chilly. Repeat the above, but replace with warmer rug. Don’t forget the apology.
I love rugs. Mine are in rugs pretty much all year round, apart from fatty Hattie (the NF pony). I don’t like rain scald. I don’t like to think of my horses standing out in the rain, getting soaking wet for hours. That doesn’t make me a cruel or bad owner.
If you want to rug your fat cob, because you don’t want him getting wet, then do it. As long as he’s not standing there in 20 degrees, dripping in sweat, then you’re not cruel.
If Sandra from Skegness tells you that it’s cruel to rug your horse, because “how do they survive in the wild”, then smile and nod.
Alfred, who forgives me for the fact he occasionally gets hot under his rugs.
