A rare skin condition in rabbit Bucky.
Bucky was surrendered to Bunny Rescue Bulgaria a few months ago and soon adopted by one of their volunteers.

Bucky suffers from severe incisor malocclusion and secondary elongated cheek teeth, but he also has a rare skin condition: Calcinosis cutis, with secondary bacterial skin infection

His incisors needed to be extracted and his cheek teeth trimmed, so he could eat easily and without pain.
He was also neutered and a skin biopsy was sent to Laboklin Germany, to aid in diagnosing his strange skin condition.
They confirmed that Bucky suffers from a very rare disease: calcinosis cutis. Basically meaning that in many areas of his skin he has calcifications (they can be seen as white spots on the radiograph).
The reason for his condition is not known and further tests must rule out hyperthyroidism and adrenal disease. Two disease that in dogs are the cause for Calcinosis cutis.

The surgical and diagnostics costs for Bucky were covered with the funds raised with Yoga with Bunnies, kindly organized by Tristana - Ashtanga Yoga Sofia.

In the past week I saw 3 different patients ( 1 guinea pig and 2 rabbits) with kidney issues.
Although the 3 cases are different in etiology, all 3 patients benefit from special diets to control or slow down their disease.

Below I'll include some links to specific granules and hay, as well as some supplements. Some of the items have no importer for Bulgaria, but can be readily ordered from abroad/online.

If the rabbit or guinea pig suffers from urinary stones (uroliths/nephroliths), it's advisable to reduce calcium intake. There are special granules and timothy hay are good examples.

Rabbit and rodents suffering from urinary disease should be stimulated to increase their water intake. Offering water in bowls to rabbits is advisable. Water can be made tastier by adding some honey.
Rabbits and rodents can eat fresh vegetables and herbs (low in calcium), e.g. cucumbers, celery, lettuce, dill.
Dark green herbs (parsley, dandelion) should only be fed in small amounts, since they are rich in calcium

Herbal (urinary) teas can be an alternative to water or added as an extra. Of course the herb can also be consumed fresh or in dry form.
Urinary supplements for rabbits and rodents may be given:

Before putting your rabbit or guinea pig on a diet or start a supplement always discuss this with you vet first. Rabbits and rodents have high need of calcium and feeding special diets if not indicated can have detrimental effects on your pets health.

Diagnosis of renal (kidney) disease in rabbits and rodents is mostly done by a combination of diagnostics tools: Radiography, ultrasonography, blood-tests and urine exam.
Many rabbits with renal disease are positive for E.cuniculi.

Once diagnosed, regular check-ups are advisable, since in many cases it's progressive and signs of worsening in rabbit and rodents often are subtle.

Central Veterinary Clinic

Hi,

After graduating from Vienna’s Veterinary University in 2009, with a major in Conservation Medicine, I became part of the veterinary team of Central Veterinary Clinic in Sofia, Bulgaria. The clinic is equipped with modern technologies (e.g. radiography, ultra-sonography, endoscopy, CT) commonly used in veterinary medicine. My colleagues with each their own specialty (ophthalmology, cardiology, orthopedics) offer me support and share their knowledge so I am able to find the right treatment for my furry, feathered or scaly patients.

To keep up with the latest knowledge in the field of exotic veterinary medicine I regularly visit international conferences and participate in workshops, seminars and online education events. I am a member of both the AEMV (Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians) and the AAZV (American Association of Zoo Veterinarians).

In addition to my daily job in the clinic, I am a consulting veterinarian for Sofia Zoo and I have assisted the WPT (World Parrot Trust) with the medical care of illegally trafficked African grey parrots, seized by the Bulgarian authorities.
