Why is ✨inner work✨ required for a compassionate, connected horse-human relationship?
When you see this, you really can’t unsee it:
How you treat your horse is how you treat yourself.
Picture rugged cowboy who’s way of life is hard work, grit, and suppressed emotions.
He rides across the plains on a broken tailbone.
He swings a leg over a horse he knows wants to throw him off, refusing to feel afraid of the cold hard ground possibly awaiting his aching joints.
He’s as hard on himself as his father once was.
How do you think he treats horses?🐎
He pushes them. Hard.
He rides them when they’re sore, floods them with scary objects till they’re broke (dissociated), works them till they’re lathered with sweat.
There’s a job to be done, after all.
His psyche is as calloused as his hands.
Now picture a deeply sensitive, perfectionistic, shame-ridden woman, who’s gotten through life by people pleasing. She’s tough on herself before anybody else can be—before another parental figure crushes her spirit and hope of love & approval.
She steps into the arena with no idea that she’s longing for the connection she never had as a child.
And at the same time, she desperately needs success and results to feel safe.
She oscillates between shame for not getting extravagant results to earn the admiration of others ➡️ to anger toward the horse for not cooperating/making her feel physically threatened ➡️ to guilt for her harshness.
She’s inconsistent with her horse, who’s flighty and anxious, never knowing which person will step into the pasture that day.
What do these two people have in common?
They treat their horses the way they treat themselves.
It’s unavoidable for any of us: if you don’t have compassion for yourself, you won’t have compassion for your horse.
If you don’t have self awareness, your blind spots will be projected onto the animal.
This is an invitation to journal on the way you treat yourself; how you operate… and how that’s reflected in your horsemanship.
What do you see? 👁️
