According to Guide Dogs UK, there are three breeds that are most commonly used in their programme. These are Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles.
Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are newly bred to be guide dogs, so it only makes sense that they do fantastic work in the entire service dog world. 🐾

How Wolf Became Dog 🐾
With over 400 recognized breeds, the variety of dogs is mind-boggling. But genetic studies tell us that all dogs trace back to an extinct wolf species shared with the gray wolf, Canis lupus.
The dog, Canis familiaris, is a direct descendent of the gray wolf, Canis lupus: In other words, dogs as we know them are domesticated wolves. Not only their behavior changed; domestic dogs are different in form from wolves, mainly smaller and with shorter muzzles and smaller teeth.
For years, wolves and dogs were considered separate species: canis familiaris and canis lupus. However, more recently, scientists generally agree they are both a sub-species of canis lupus. Unlike dogs and foxes, wolves and dogs can reproduce, creating the controversial wolf-dog.
Genetic studies suggest a domestication process commencing over 25,000 YBP, in one or several wolf populations in either Europe, the high Arctic, or eastern Asia. There is clear evidence that dogs were derived from grey wolves during the initial phases of domestication.

Dog breeds are indeed powerful evidence for parts of evolutionary theory, the power of natural variation and selection over thousands of years. There are, of course, many other lines of evidence for evolution.
Pinpointing the exact first domesticated dog breed is challenging due to the ancient nature of dog domestication. However, archaeological evidence suggests that the first domesticated dogs were likely ancestors of modern breeds like the Anatolian Shepherd, Basenji, and Saluki.
There are seven major dog groups: Working, Herding, Toy, Hound, Sporting, Non-Sporting, and Terrier. The Working Group features breeds that perform certain practical tasks, while the Hound Group features breeds that hunt.
The Shih Tzu shares more DNA with wolves than most other breeds. The only breed group with more shared wolf DNA is the Nordic spitz group (Huskies, Samoyeds, and Malamutes). The breed almost went extinct in the early 1900s.
The Molossian Hound was an ancient Greek dog and "pawhaps" the most famous extinct breed in history.
