“I can’t seem to get him to soften, bend, or give to the bit at all.”
Well, yeah! We can clearly see these big hooks, and who knows what’s going on with the molars??
Your horse’s jaw is supposed to move in a smooth figure-eight motion. Hooks like this disrupt that motion, interfering with your horse’s natural chewing pattern, and causing TMJ discomfort. This makes it difficult to impossible for your horse to soften his jaw to the bit and bend or flex correctly through the poll.
I find these hooks in a surprisingly high number of horses that “see the dentist regularly.” You can easily do a visual check your horse’s incisors and test how freely the jaw slides by performing a GENTLE slide test. If you have any concerns about your horse, ask your vet to look into it for you or schedule an appointment with a veterinary dentist.
The jaw affects the poll—that part is relatively easy to understand. But both the jaw and poll also influence how the rest of the horse moves.
Once the teeth have been addressed and natural jaw motion is restored, a full-body massage with MFR will help relieve tension and soreness caused by old muscle patterns and new muscle use. This helps promote the return of healthy, free movement and effective muscle use throughout the body.
