Tick and flea control!

January and February are typically very wet months which comes with an increase in tick and flea populations. The best way to keep your pets and your home safe from these menacing insects is by being consistent with flea and tick prevention. Prevention is the best defense!

Why is prevention important?
Flea and tick infestations can cause the animal to suffer from quite a lot of distress. Flea bites are quite painful and itchy. Some pets have increased sensitivity to flea saliva which can cause an allergic reaction called Flea allergy dermatitis. Fleas also transmit tapeworms which can then be transmitted from pets to people.

Ticks on the other hand transmit tick borne diseases (Tick bite fever) which can quite badly impact the health of your pet and can be fatal if not managed on time.

Methods of prevention
The best way to determine which flea and tick prevention option is right for your pet is to consult your Vet. Options available include dipping, flea and tick shampoos, flea and tick sprays, flea and tick powder, flea and tick collars, spot on treatments and chewable tablets. It is also important to treat the pet’s environment as well. Trim grass and keep your property free from organic waist where fleas can hide and breed. Vacuum often and wash your pets bedding in hot water to kill fleas, eggs, and larva present
