Wood ducks are always a favorite of mine. This beautiful bird is now sitting on a mantel in Texas

Just wanted to say good luck to all the hunters out there this weekend. Remember proper field care is a vital part of quality taxidermy. I share this picture every year. It is an excellent guide to follow. Please call if you have any questions.

Here’s some info I feel the need to share, so consider this a PSA on field care. I get phone calls every day asking what someone’s supposed to do with their duck after the hunt. Proper field care is one of the most important steps in ensuring a quality mount and it’s all on you, the hunter. First, let’s start with what not to do. No panty hose, no news paper and no paper bags. I’ve heard this more times than I can count. These do nothing to protect your bird and will cause it to freezer burn. The next two things people have a hard time with. Keep it out of your dog’s mouth. I know that’s the whole point of having a retriever but they can be hard on a bird. If you know you want save one pick it up yourself. Second is duck totes. I love the hero shot as much as anybody but don’t hang the bird by the neck on a tote. In fact don’t mess with neck at all. Especially do not ring the neck. It shows and I can’t fix it. Carry the bird by and use the tote on the feet only. I recommend you carry a few Walmart sacks in your shell bag. Put your bird in one to protect it until you get home. Once you’re home fold the ducks head onto it’s back and wrap the bird up tight in a few more sacks or a trash bag and tape it up. This will help prevent freezer burn and will keep for a while. As always, good luck and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to call.

As a boy, my dad took me hunting and taught me the ways of an outdoorsman. Today, I get to continue the tradition and ensure that the love of the outdoors is passed on from generation to generation.
There is no better way to relive the memory of your child's first buck than to have him help mount it.

A few things that children can learn from hunting:
Stewardship and respect. A good hunter learns respect for the animals, the land, and to accept stewardship over both.
Skills to help provide. Youth learn about resources in the world they can hunt and harvest. They develop skills that help them provide for themselves and their families.
Patience, control, and confidence. Hunting is a sport that requires diligence, discipline, and courage—all attributes that help youth gain self-confidence.

"Train a child up in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

To everyone hitting the woods tomorrow, please be safe and I wish you the best of luck. I post this picture every year because it is an excellent diagram for caping out a deer. I don’t care who you use, but do your taxidermist a favor and skin your deer out right. We can only work with what you bring us. The most important thing is to stay out of the neck and brisket. Again, be safe and good luck. I hope the one you’re after shows up. We’re out in the national forest this weekend but feel free to call or message. If I don’t answer I’ll get back with you as soon as possible.

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to post for awhile. The form is a semi upright wall pedestal which is the perfect choice for the flag wrap backing. This particular deer had been around the block as well. His ears were split in several places, absolutely covered in scars and if you notice, blind in his right eye. Guys, come see me. You won’t be disappointed. Over 13+ years experience specializing in whitetails and waterfowl.

Here’s a neat pair of deer taken by a husband and wife. They started as clients and the husband has since become a good friend of mine. You might notice one of them from my last post. She took 1st in her county and second in the ladies division at the Big Buck Classic. Not only that, I’ve got another one of hers sitting in my shop you’ll see later on this year. The other deer was killed in November and still carrying dried velvet. Not something you see every day.

Put these deer out awhile ago and thought it was a neat example of the variation in whitetail capes. Have one very light colored deer, a what I would say average medium color, and one more on the dark side. Even with all the deer that come through my shop, and that I’ve worked on over the years, I still appreciate the fact that that is someone’s trophy. It may be a little girl’s first buck or a some veteran hunters 100th. I love hearing the story and am thankful that I was picked to be a part of it!

Hey guys, I’ve posted this before and I’ll post it again. This is a great example of the correct way to cape a deer for a shoulder mount. Wether you use me or not, make your taxidermist happy and help make your deer look the best you can.
Good luck and have a great season. Any questions, don’t hesitate to call.

Folks, just another reminder, in order to prevent the results on the right, please refer to the diagram when caping your deer. I strive to give you the absolute best of my ability but there’s not a whole lot you can do about this. Proper field care is paramount and can make often make it or break it when it comes to your mount.

It’s that time of year again. The 2019 duck season is here. I hope you’ve found birds and have plenty of water. I’d just like to wish everyone a safe and successful opening weekend and season. Please, if you’re going to be in a boat, WEAR YOUR LIFEJACKET! Don’t forget the kill switch either.
Couple of tips in case you get a bird you’d like to mount. Keep a few plastic grocery bags in your blind bag. Use the bags for transport in order to keep the bird in as best shape as possible. If you freeze your bird put it in several more bags or a good black trash bag. Avoid carrying the bird by its neck. Use the feet or cradle the body. Also, never ring it’s neck. If you use a tote, hook the feet not the head. These simple steps will go a long ways in ensuring a quality mount.
As always call or text if you have any questions.

To all the hunters hitting the woods this weekend, have a safe and successful hunt. Let’s be thankful that we live in such a great country where we are blessed to be able to experience God’s creation. Enjoy spending time with family and friends as well.

Remember: If you are fortunate enough to kill your trophy, field care is one of the most important factors to a quality mount.
1. Refer to the caping photo attached.
2. Keep your cape dry and clean.
3. Place your cape and meat on ice or in the freezer ASAP.

Have a safe hunt this weekend! Good luck out there.
