What if I told you growling is good? For some dogs it is. Playing tug is fun! Playing tug with dogs who understand the rules of the game is more fun! Many dogs growl or bark when playing. What’s important is that you know the difference between unacceptable behavior and proper engagement and create structure around play time.
There are preferences and personalities at work here too. Demand barking maybe on your “never” list. You can see it’s not on mine. I like each dog to fully develop its personality. You can see Edie is not short on it! Edie learned the play rules as an adult. Some dogs enjoy tugging, some retrieving, others possessing, some all three.

If you watched the first video you’ll see I start building off the dog’s name by making going away from me a game.
“Go!” Is done easily enough by throwing food and having the dog chase it and eat it! Calling the dog back and rewarding when he gets to you builds engagement, speed, and is the basis of a reliable recall.

All dogs like to eat. Be a part of their mealtime by building a relationship and structure around food.

Frequently is key because building a behavior takes repetition, correct repetition.
When the beginning stage is solid for your kitchen obedience then you can make it increasingly more challenging.

Even before I train anything remotely fancy I get the dog interested in me and in its name. I bet you can guess his name. 😏 Most often I do this in place of a boring solo meal time. Missed training opportunity alert!! 🚨 I do food reward and see where the dog is at, what they’re offering, and go from there. I use meal time as training time indefinitely, like for the whole dogs life - why not?! I work for food too!
