'No animal should have to serve or entertain until they are deemed unworthy'
To Gypsy~who continues to be a friend, and a teacher. To the horse who helped me down the path of becoming an Equine massage therapist. ~
It's nearly seven years since you've been in my care and eleven years since the day I met you.
Your back is getting a slight sway, and your weight is getting harder to keep.
Your energy and strength has decreased, and your soft, gentle eyes are now reflecting your years more than ever.
The vet bills and feed costs are becoming more frequent, and it's possible that you could lose sight in your right eye.
Our rides together will be shortened
and in time... will come to an end.
We can no longer go through mountain passes together or race down the trail.
There will be no more moonlight rides up to Allenby pass or week long backcountry trips together.
The inevitable is getting closer with every passing day, and so I reflect on our time together, and I look forward to our coming years we still have.
Even though you are showing your age, and lack the energy and strength you once had,
you are still worth your weight in gold...and more.
You deserve to be loved and cared for until you are ready to leave this earth.
Because in the end...
you did not choose this life...
You did not choose to be passed around, mistreated or misunderstood.
You did not choose to get a sore back, be lame or get eye problems.
However, you did choose to forgive.
You chose to be trustworthy, honest and gentle.
You are a friend- and a teacher.
You have thrown challenges my way, and pushed me out of my comfort zone.
You have shown me what patience, respect, trust and kindness can accomplish.
You were never dangerous.
You were never 'just a horse'.
So even though times have changed, and we can no longer do the things we used to, I promise to give you the love and care you deserve...until the end.
But until then... every day spent with you is a blessing ๐
Treat every horse with respect and kindness.
