The Wild Wolves of Ellesmere Island.

Thought I'd share one of my favourite Arctic poems with you today, by Canadian John Moss in his beautiful book, Enduring Dreams:

The Arctic air is filled with light,
It is important to know this
not diurnal day, the sun quotidian,
but seasons, trembling azure,
in winter shimmering silk,
against the sempiternal night.

The Inuit were north
of nowhere
on the boundary of nothing
until they were discovered there
The ironies are absolute. I write this
as an outsider, native only to geography;
a visitor, for a while less remote.

Arctic landscape
enfolds the consciousness
in light.
The light is spatial, seasonal,
the light is air and ice and stone,
not the measure of our daily spin between polariities
(rolling clockwise, east from west
as we pursue our way about the sun).

We isolate ourselves
on the surface of a sphere
locate ourselves with mathmatical
exactitude, the metaphysics of geography.
But maps are not the same as memories;
the erotics of space
are not, at best, a dream.

Walk carefully through Arctic landscape; one footprint in the tundra could last a hundred years; on the spring ice, eternity.

Sundog Sits was happy to be back at work in Newboro on the weekend, with Mitzi and Andy. Unlike Calgary George, Andy isn’t much of a conversationalist, but invites company frog hunting by sitting at the porch door watching me and politely refusing to come in.

A man’s best friend.
See you again Folsom, our four-legged family member. .
You helped us raise three boys,
you ran hundreds of miles with us,
you understood Ojibwe,
you helped me on-camera in a TV news item and stole the show,
you stole food from our plates and slurped coffee from our cups when we looked away,
you licked our tears when we cried,
you ran away and came home in a cab,
you snuck meat from the back door of a restaurant and were chased home by the owner,
you saved a stranger’s life,
you ate a landfill’s worth of garbage,
you survived being run over,
you fought off a bear for my dad,
you devoured a giant novelty Toblerone and lived to tell the tale even though chocolate is supposed to be poison for dogs,
you fought,
you barked,
you hu**ed
and through it all you steadfastly refused to retrieve anything your entire life, even though your mom and dad were champion retrievers.
Folsom, you helped me grieve my late father, the end of an era in my life and your brother Caravaggio.
Your final act of service was waiting until after we finished celebrating our youngest’s birthday before making your journey. You put our happiness ahead of your own suffering. What a good puppy. .
Of all the dogs I came across in life, TV, movies and traditional legends nothing prepared me for a dog as epic as you were Folsom.
Now you are with your parents, your brother and my old man in the happy hunting grounds.
The old ones tell us that Nenaboozhoo had to part ways with his brother the wolf in order to be able to walk this earth.
May the creator bless us with this heartache for many years so that when we see you again our reunion will be that much sweeter.

A pretty Mother’s Day posy from Tiggs this morning

Here is Simon, in the guitar case ( all the cats love it!), and his buddy Finnegan in the string section. I arrived at this house to find Simon ill with what turned out to be pancreatic cancer. We taxied to the vet that very first day. Under the care of his doctor, there followed a bittersweet 6 weeks of keeping him pain-free and comfortable until his owners' return. He was a gentle sweet cat ♡

Celebrating Poetry Month, SunDog Sits shares a
long-cherished gift from a friend ♡

The Visitor

Alone in a wood ( or so I thought )
I pondered the turn my life had taken
and fretted on decisions soon to be made,
when suddenly came sprightly steps toward me.
And peering through leafy branches
a yellow dog appeared,
who smiled and danced about,
in gladness greeting me.
A touch of my hand upon her head
and she stepped the more lively.
How small my troubles shrank then,
and my golden friend chased them
up into the tallest tree,
circled twice and galloped,
barking,
back to from whence she had come.
