Just posted videos of Stella and Moss (11 months old now) working on inside flanks. While they are both working out in the field, sometimes it makes sense to head back to the round pen so we can focus on the “one thing”. This was the first time Stella has offered an inside flank on the come bye side. Pleased with how relaxes they both are with the process.

What started as a couple of men making a bet in a pub in Wales in the 1800s has become an international sport with everyone of all ages competing on many levels with their dogs.

My guest today, Lisa Wright, is a retired professional dog trainer. These days, Lisa and her dogs are multi-USBCHA Open trial winners, Canadian Championship double lift finalists, Calgary Stampede finalists and Meeker semi-finalists.

Lisa is the President of the Canadian Border Collie Association, past vice president of the APdT and, my favourite thing, she’s Griffin’s breeder.

These days, she is focused on trialling and has no current breeding plans. Lisa lives on her farm in Athabasca, Alberta, with her dogs, her husband Travis, and their sheep and livestock guardian dogs.

In this episode, Lisa explains what a sheepdog trial is, and we dive into one of my favourite topics: border collies!

Lisa sat down to chat right off of her win at the Hurricane Hills trial with her dog Star, who is Griffin’s mom.

Looking for a new partner in crime? Rocky is out of a daughter of my Star (and a sister to Kate) by my Jake. Well bred, and well raised. He'll make an excellent sheep or cow dog, or a great addition to an active family. He is the same way bred as Maverick who I have in for training. There is video of Maverick, Jake, Star and Kate on this page if you are wondering about working style.

Maverick has been here for approximately 6 weeks. While there is still plenty of work left to do, he is looking quite nice for a 9 month old. The barbs he is working are not “puppy sheep”, and I find this helps a dog learn from their actions.

Maverick, a son of Jake out of a daughter of Star (Abby who is a sister to Kate). Just turning 9 months and 2 1/2 weeks of training. Let him work these undogged yearlings for the first time today and let him feel them out for himself without command. Very pleased with how sensible this young dog is. Maverick is owned by Chelcii Bruyere. She has same way bred pups on the ground, with one still looking for work. Message me if you would like more info.

Haven't posted about Jake lately - too busy with the girls! I REALLY like this dog. The girls and I have one more trial in a couple of weeks, and then I'll be able to focus on him with consistent work. Having said that, he picks things up quickly, and really wants to please.

Home from our latest adventure! I finally got up the nerve to enter Meeker and was hoping not to embarrass myself too badly. lol As it happened, the girls really stepped up and both got sheep to my feet (most dogs didn’t), and Star had an exceptionally good run - I got to hold the rope! We won the Maureen Scott Robinson memorial crook, and the Shining Star award. It was a fantastic experience, and we all learned a lot! Looking forward to next year…🙂

I'm mulling over whether to breed Star or not. She's do in sometime in the next few weeks. Working homes would have priority, and if I bred her this would be her last litter. I don't know who I'd breed her to yet - haven't got that far in the mulling department. If you are interested, send me a Pm. Will help with the mulling.
