One of the communities we work with in Northern Quebec is being evacuated due to the wildfires, leaving many dogs (including strays) displaced and in need of emergency intake. They are estimating 25-30 dogs of varying sizes, ages, temperaments, etc. that need a safe place to land.

Does your dog have any unique traits you have noticed, whether in personality or physically: Her ears! She has really good hearing. And her ears go up! So cute and she has the softest fur!

In a short paragraph please provide any other details or a brief overview of your foster dog: Her nickname is “Lena Beana“! Lena is just amazing. She’s been the best foster we’ve ever had. She’s very loving and affectionate. She can play by herself, with other pups or with people. She loves to play fetch with any toy, stick or pinecone. She loves to explore on walks. We’ve enjoyed walks in town, at the Terrace, and alone on crown land. She’ll be a great camping dog.

She’s a slow eater and will stop eating when she’s full. She’s treat motivated! She loves her treats, they make a great reward when teaching her new tricks.

She loves to run. She loves playing with the kids outside, she gets very energetic with them, but not overwhelming. My kids are 6 and 8 and are both still sensitive to jumping and nipping, but Lena doesn’t do that. She’s with them but not on them. She’s a great dog for a family with young kids.

Right now with brushing, she thinks it’s a game and tries to eat the brush. She’s good in the bath. Clipping her nails is a two person job, she doesn’t like that very much. She’s a really good listener. She knows her name.

Is your dog good with other dogs: yes, playful with her brother, barks at other dogs and approaches them with caution and tail wagging.

Is your dog good with kids: yes, learning not to jump up.

Current size: puppy size

Estimated adult size: large

Is your dog house trained: Lena is doing well but has had a very occasional accident. She picked up the training early and we take her out regularly when at home. She has a routine in the am before going in the crate and is fine for about 5 hours then we let her out and will p*e/poop outside.

Is your dog crate trained: yes, doing very well. Responds well to treats hidden in toys to get her in and she settles.

Does your dog have any special needs or medical conditions? None that I am aware of.

Does your dog have any or display any aggression (toys, food, people, leash reactivity): if her brother goes near her food when she’s eating she quickly tells him to ‘go away’.

Is your dog playful: very, loves to play with her brother, runs around in the yard with him and plays with our kids as well.

Describe the dogs energy level: Lena is actually quite calm after she has had her exercise. She’s quick to settle once in the house or lay down and chew on her stuffie.

Does your dog like to snuggle: she loves attention and cuddles.

Does your dog know basic commands: Yes- sit, off, come, no chew. Training treats on hand to reward her for good listening is effective. Learning ‘wait’ as well.

Does your dog know any special tricks: no

Describe the dogs level of training: basic. No formal training done, just what we are teaching her

Does your dog like to go on walks: loves walks and loves going outside in general.

Does your dog have any fears: larger dogs with deep barking, large vehicles. She’s ‘ok’ in the car, will whine a little.

Does your dog have any unique traits you have noticed whether in personality or physically: Lena is very smart, a quick learner and loves praise. She will be a very loyal dog. She does like to bark at people walking by or other dogs and loves approaching people and kids when out for a walk.

What are the 3 first words that come to mind when you think of your dog: loving, smart, calm

Provide a description of your foster dog and the ideal home for them: Lena loves to play with kids or her brother but will settle once inside. She sleeps through the night from 10pm until we get up at 5am. On the weekend she sleeps until 7. She is a very smart puppy and has a lot of potential if taken to obedience training/classes. She would be great with a family who has kids or just with adults as she doesn’t need constant playtime. She’s used to going for walks and walks pretty good on leash-likes to hike up onto the snowbank and look around as well as play in the yard.

In honour of Betty White! ❤️🐶🐱🐹🐰

January 17th is Betty White’s 101st birthday. It is also an opportunity for us to remember and honour a woman who dedicated her life to helping animals while entertaining their humans. Betty White was outspoken about her love of animals, the importance of spaying and neutering pets, microchipping, and supporting rescue organizations.

Last year on January 17th, we were overwhelmed by the support of our community in Betty’s honour. This year, we want to encourage folks to think of Betty, and show their support to their favourite rescue or animal welfare organizations. 2022 was a tough year for those in the rescue world, so your generosity is greatly appreciated.
