Blue-green algae time! Great post from Penhorn Animal Hospital. Updates on affected bodies of water can be found on www.novascotia.ca
Blue-green algae information and reports for Nova Scotia. Watch for blue-green algae from May to October. Blue-green algae (also called cyanobacteria) occurs naturally in surface waters like lakes, ponds, rivers and streams.

With the temperatures soaring again today, we wanted to remind you of some essential tips to keep your furry friends safe and comfortable in this heat:
Hydration is Key π§: Make sure your pets have access to plenty of fresh, cool water throughout the day.
Avoid Midday Walks π: The pavement can get extremely hot and burn your petβs paws. Opt for early morning or late evening walks instead.
Never Leave Pets in Cars π: Even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can rise dangerously high within minutes.
Provide Shade π³: Ensure your pets have a shaded area to relax in if they are outside.
Cool Down Techniques βοΈ: Use damp towels, cooling mats, or even a kiddie pool for your pets to splash in.

Dogs pulling on the lead is a common issue faced by many guardians, rooted in a variety of emotional responses such as stress, fear, anxiety, and excitement. It's also often simply because they haven't been taught otherwise.
Addressing this behaviour effectively requires a deep understanding of your dog's underlying motivations and emotional state. Successful and ethical training methods prioritise this understanding, offering solutions that respect the dog's feelings and needs.
By focusing on why dogs act the way they do, we can develop strategies that are not only effective but also strengthen the bond between us and our dogs. Ready to learn more? Get your free loose lead walking webinar today - comment for the link.

In the interest of socialising our puppies we can attempt to saturate their lives with other dogs because that's socialisation right? Meeting 100 different dogs before their 6 month birthday?
(This also applies to attempts to socialise our rescue dogs too).
There is a HUGE fallout in socialising your dog with other dogs TOO MUCH. Generally there's a risk of one of two things:
1. The typical fallout - puppy grows up obsessed with other dogs and develops rude social skills/becomes frustrated if they can't play/becomes over stimulated and reactive on sight of them.
Or 2. The more unconsidered fallout - puppy grows up completely over saturated to the point he wants absolutely nothing to do with dogs and can become reactive/aggressive to their presence/attempted interactions. Generally they've dealt with so much rudeness etc from others they become extremely intolerant to others.
"When he started puppy club he was fine, but after a few months he became snappy with the other puppies" is a story from today.
I so often hear variants of this from dogs who have a history of going to daycare but get "kicked out" eventually for aggressive behaviour. This is more common than we realise. Far more common than we realise because we think there's something wrong with OUR DOG that he's become aggressive so we don't shout about it. Everybody else's dogs cope at daycare don't they?
No, they don't. That's the problem.
OVER SOCIALISATION IS A BIG BIG PROBLEM in our society. Just as much as under socialisation. The problem is there's no figure we can put on it to guide you. We can't just say to you "ok, so make sure they meet 50 dogs by 6 months instead of 100!" because it depends on the interactions. A 2 second meet on the street is not the same as a 2 hour play at daycare with 10 other dogs.
In general it's about BALANCE. Don't look to throw your puppy around other dogs day in day out. Puppies need decompression walks just as adult dogs do, if not MORE THAN! These are walks AWAY FROM others entirely. Not just learning to ignore them at a distance, actually AWAY from them altogether.
It's worth keeping this in mind when we are undertaking the all important socialisation process. Time off from the hard stuff is so important πΎπ
