I've always said I would be very transparent with everyone following us and our program.
Today, I can't help but feel like the most horrible dog mom ever, even though I know these things can happen SO quickly, and most times, without us noticing anything.
Last year, when Daisy was around 30 days pregnant, she managed to sneak out during the night and eat a smelly kitchen cloth from our counters (when pregnant, she would eat ANYTHING.. we learned that the hard way). Of course, it got stuck in her intestines and needed an emergency surgery.
Yesterday, we had to bring her AGAIN to the emergency vet, as she was showing signs very very similar to last year, and this time, I was even able to feel something hard in her stomach. I knew something got stuck in there and she needed another surgery.
When we got there, they quickly took x-rays to see what was going on. The vet came out and asked "have you guys had corn lately, because it kind of looks like corn texture on the xray?". I told him "no, it's been at LEAST 3-4 weeks since we had corn last". So we concluded that it was probably another piece of fabric... a weird pregnancy craving again 🙄.
Well, to my surprise, once she came out of surgery last night, they called me to say that yes, it was in fact a piece of 🌽 (our son Isaac's corn, to be exact, as it was cut smaller 😂). I was SHOCKED that it had been sitting in her stomach for about 3-4 weeks before it decided to go down and cause a blockage. The vet said it's very very common. Sometimes they retrieve toys or other things that have been there for 6+ months before causing issues (he said the longest was a toy that was eaten 10 months prior!!!!).
This doesn't surprise me one bit though, as Daisy is a FOOD LOVER!! She would do backflips for food if she could (our food, not hers lol), and it most likely happened when we weren't looking for 2.4 seconds.
The good news with all of that is that they were able to tell me that Daisy was very likely pregnant. They saw sacs on the ultrasound, but at 21 days pregnant, it was still too early to see heartbeats just yet (we can usually see heartbeats at 25+ days).
I will do an ultrasound next week, and if the sacs grew and I can see little fetuses, it means we will be welcoming F1 Bernedoodles around August 1st.
The team at "Moncton Veterinary Walk-In and Urgent Care" was absolutely phenomenal from start to finish 👏 They used the safest meds in pregnancy, and since we've been through it before, my mind is a bit more at ease knowing that last time, even with our bad luck, she still welcomed 7 healthy pups who turned 1 year old yesterday and are living their absolute best life 💗
I'm not sure if Daisy will ever learn (wishful thinking.. I know she won't), but I sure hope this doesn't happen again! I don't know if we'll ever eat corn again either 😂
She is doing really well. She doesn't seem in pain at all even though we can't give her strong meds (not safe for pregnancy), so i'm really happy to see her like that this morning!
We shall see on the ultrasound next week if those little puppies are growing 🤞❤️
