DID YOU KNOW!
Your dogs and cats have a**l glands?!
A**l glands are two sacs located on the just below their a**s (inside the body). Weird, I know. But they’re not useless! The most common theory as to why domesticated animals still have them is that it helps to lubricate f***s and make defecation easier, and to help mark their territory.
They can fill up and become hard or uncomfortable often making it hard for them to defecate, can cause infections, or even burst!
How do you know if they’re too full? I’m sure we aren’t all going to want to give our babies a full re**al exam every time you think they might be having troubles, but here’s a few (non-contact) things you can watch out for:
- bum scooting or rubbing on floors
- excessively licking or trying to get at the area
- straining to p**p
- blood or pus in the stool or on the a**s
If you’re noticing signs of potentially full a**l glands that need to be released/expressed, give me a shout and let me help your baby’s bum! I can also discuss ways to help avoid this problem in the future!
