Friends, I need to thank you SINCERELY.

Recently, the TKR following has grown to nearly 900 people, and I am just BEYOND grateful for such overwhelming support. It's humbling, and I always want to do my best to make all of you proud for taking the time to follow my journey. It makes me emotional, too. I'm trying not to cry, lol.

I can't express what it means to me, that you like my photos and videos, and engage with me, I'm really just a crazy little rat lady.

These two boys from Umbrella Rattery will be joining TKR soon!
I've met Ren already, as he is a much beloved member of the family there, and I'm SO grateful to be bringing him here!
I'm informed they are BOTH the sweetest gentlemen, and I'm ecstatic to meet them!!
I am sure they'll do great things here!

I'm not quite ready to retire Peach, so she and Ren will be paired eventually for her second litter.

When TKR Sub Zero is of an appropriate age and maturity to breed, she and Avalanche will be paired to see if we can get our Russian Blue line going!

Now the weather just needs to cooperate so I can get to Umbrella Rattery and bring these cutie pies home!! 💜💜💜

You can surrender your lone rats back to me, if you do not wish to adopt more.
All rats I have bred are welcome back home, no matter what.

What should you do when you're left with 1 rat from a group?

Well, first of all, you should do everything to avoid ever being in the situation where you are left with just one rat from a group. I have a whole article about rolling rat groups on my website that covers this in detail, but today we're going to look at what your options are if you do end up with a single rat for whatever reason.

1. The most obvious solution is to get more rats. If you have a rat who is alone, your priority needs to be to get them company ASAP. Rats do not need time to grieve and the longer they are alone the more detrimental it is to their well-being. If you are in this situation, then by all means contact reputable breeders, but the chance of them having rats both at the right age to go to new homes and without a waiting list is extremely slim. Instead, you should focus on getting rescues that are ready immediately; check out rescue centres near you and Rat Rescue Network UK. You do not need to get rats the same age as your rat, and especially if your rat is an old rat, make sure you get a younger pair so that you don't end up in the same situation in the near future.

2. The second option, if you don't want to continue owning rats, is to rehome your rat to someone that can offer them company. Again, this needs to be done ASAP, so post on the rats wanted thread on the group linked above, or make a post in Rat Care UK. Make sure you vet the owner so that you know that their care is going to be up to your standards, and also that they are going to ensure your rat has company for the rest of their life (e.g., if your rat is 18 months and they have a lone 26 month old, unless they are getting other rats too your rat is going to be alone again pretty sure).

3. The final option that I see people talking about is loaning or fostering rats, particularly from breeders. I think this is so rarely an option that's it's not worth mentioning, but I am doing so purely because it is talk about so often. Essentially the idea behind this is that someone else lends you their rats for your rat to integrate in to. You look after their rats and yours until yours passes away and then you give the group back. While lovely in theory (you don't need to adopt more rats permanently and you get to be with your rat until the end), in reality, this is only really an option in rare circumstances where a breeder not only has a rat group that they don't need for breeding purposes, but also that they feel happy enough to lend to you for a period of time. I have only known this to be an option where the owner with a lone rat is one of their owners that they have known for a long time and have a good relationship with. I doubt any reputable breeder would loan out their much loved pets to someone they didn't know - I know I wouldn't!

Het Emotioneel Leed Dat Dieren Fokken Heet.

Dieren fokken klinkt geweldig, want wie houdt er nou niet van babydiertjes?
Meer dan eens heb ik hier klanten over de vloer die uit enthousiasme uitroepen "oh dat zou ik ook wel willen doen!!"

2025 is net begonnen en ik heb de nodige emotionele klappen al te pakken. Typ dit nu ook wederom met de tranen in mijn ogen door zojuist het plotse verlies van een nieuw vriendje.

2025 is net begonnen, en ik ben mijn geliefde Nanook met nestje en al verloren. Zij is helaas vlak na mijn vertrek naar bed savonds overleden, en de kleintjes zo jong en kwetsbaar als dat ze waren hebben uit man en macht met de oogjes nog dicht gezocht naar melk en warmte... en die helaas allemaal stuk voor stuk deze nacht door het gebrek aan moederliefde niet overleefd hebben.

Deze maand is ook Toby heel plots overleden, een jong mannetje wat uit mijn eigen foklijnen hierheen kwam voor aanvulling en versterking van de lijn. Toby trof ik vorige week heel slap en non-responsive aan in zijn verblijf. Ik heb hem opgepakt en bij me gehouden en hij is binnen 5 minuten ingeslapen.

En vanavond met de check-ronde vond ik Mystery. Als eerste direct suiker en vocht gegeven. Hier leek hij iets van op te knappen en hij kroop dicht tegen me aan voor warmte. Na wat te hebben nagekeken en gevoeld ontdekte ik een harde massa in zijn buik, en heb hierop besloten hem pijnstillers te geven en bij me te nemen zoals hij aangaf qua behoefte.
Als ik maar 1x mijn hand weg bewoog van hem schuifelde hij in paniek terug naar mijn vertrouwde warmte en geur. Mystery is zojuist op mijn borst rustig in slaap gevallen en zal nooit meer wakker worden.

3 dierbare beestjes die ook gewoon mijn geliefde huisdiertjes zijn.
Waar ik stuk voor stuk om geef.
Rust in vrede liefjes 🌟❤️

Vandaag met controle in de pensioenbak werd ik ook weer voorbereid op de keiharde waarheid dat leven niet voor eeuwig is en dat ik zeer hoogstwaarschijnlijk binnenkort afscheid zal gaan moeten nemen van 3 dametjes die mij zoveel dierbaars hebben gegeven en zelf zo dierbaar zijn voor mij.

Met de check ronde ontdekken dat 3 dames niet drachtig willen raken, de oneindige herhaling van keuzes moeten maken. Nog een keer proberen? Stoppen? Ander mannetje?
En als ik stop, wat dan? Hoe ga ik dat g*t opvullen in de fokplannen?

En ik doe het met liefde, ookal stromen de tranen zoals momenten als vandaag over mijn wangen en breek ik elke keer opnieuw in 200 stukjes. Want het mooie van de natuur en wat ik doe is dat ik Toby kan herinneren aan zijn 2 prachtige nestjes mini-me's die hij me nalaat.

"Fokken is toch makkelijk? Je zet "gewoon" 2 muizen samen".
Als dagen op dit ben ik jaloers op de naïviteit, want hoe gelukzalig is het om het besef niet te hebben dat de natuur genadeloos is.
En ik gun het iedereen om daar niet continue piinlijk bewust van te worden gemaakt.

Fokken is tegelijk het mooiste, maar ook het zwaarste waar ik elke dag mee opsta en weer mee naar bed ga.
Het is tranen van verdriet en tranen van vreugde. 1 nestje dat wordt geboren en een uur later weer met 1 van je muisjes op schoot te zitten en hem/haar in liefde zijn/haar laatste adem uit laten blazen.

Ik gun het iedereen om de warmte te voelen, maar besef altijd dat de natuur zijn eigen balans heeft en geen donder geeft om onze emoties. 200 dromen en doelen, maar uiteindelijk heb je niks in te brengen als moeder natuur beslist zoals alleen zij dat kan.

Oggie was a pretty good girl to start, but now that (I'm relatively certain) she's pregnant, she has been significantly mellowing and becoming just that much sweeter.
I didn't think I could love her more, but here we are!

Friends!

It's come to my attention there could be some confusion regarding my practices, due to my rattery name being similar to another.

To clarify;

I do NOT practice band castration of my rats.

I have never, and will never.

I believe this to be highly unethical, as I am of the opinion it is exceptionally and unnecessarily painful to the rat. Rats are NOT livestock, and they should NOT be managed as such. I will NEVER stand behind such a practice.

Should you wish to castrate/neuter a male rat, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! do so by contacting an exotic veterinarian who specializes in treating rodents/rats.

It is SO important this procedure is performed by someone competent and knowledgeable, as complications may arise from doing it incorrectly (or with what is essentially an elastic band), and pain management is also of utmost importance.
