I would like to say a great big, sincere THANK YOU to Tammy Patterson-Ayre!!
She donated a cage to the rattery that I can use for my dwarf program as it grows, and I'm beyond grateful!!
Thank you so much, Tammy for your kindness and generosity, and for being such a great friend and rat parent! πŸ’œ

Why do I wait until 8 weeks or older to adopt out my babies?

Not all breeders will. Some will, some will home them younger.
Here is why I prefer to wait:

Baby rats typically begin to wean around three weeks old, when their eyes and ears open up, and they discover food and the world around them. As they begin to eat more solid food, they nurse from their mother less, however they're not typically fully weaned until about four to five weeks old.

It is important to their emotional and physical development to allow them to nurse until weaning takes place. This allows them to develop a stronger immune system, contributing to their overall health and well-being. Being with their mother longer also helps them develop crucial social skills and behaviours that they will need to effectively become part of their future mischief and get along with other rats. Early separation from their mother and litter mates can cause stress and even health issues, and should, in my opinion, be avoided. Rats should be encouraged to thrive, not just exist, and allowing them to wean properly contributes to this.

Early separation can lead to shyness or even aggression, as it limits their ability to learn social skills at a crucial time in their development. They need this time to learn to interact with other rats and know their place in the social hierarchy that all rat mischiefs employ. Allowing them to stay with their litter mates until 8 weeks also tends to reduce stress when rehoming, therefore it is of utmost importance when adopting young rats that they be homed in pairs or trios, as they MUST have same-aged company for their emotional well-being and social and behavioural development.

I believe it is of great importance to give young rats the best start in life that I can.
Therefore, I do not rehome any rats prior to 8 weeks of age, and sometimes older.

Hey friends!

I've had a good break, and I've been decompressing while learning more about rat breeding from my mentor, Diana.

I've learned some things that will hopefully help me deal with the difficulty I've been having lately with failed rat pregnancies.

I'm also very excited, because my babies from Diana will be old enough to start breeding around August 20th, a week before my birthday! I've had time to get to know the babies, and begin bonding with them and I can tell you, these are some excellent rats!! I'm really impressed and thrilled with their temperament and health/constitution, and how well they have integrated with our other rats, as well as how they interact with humans.

As they're dwarf carriers, my goal with them will be to produce dwarves for breeding and to eventually offer as pets.

As such, I'll be resuming my breeding program by August at the latest! Just wanted to keep you all in the loop!

**OFF TOPIC**

Not entirely off topic, though.

My daughter Lexi has a birthday today!!

In the rattery, Lexi is a huge helper, and she also helps me to do better by asking me questions about the rats and genetics whenever she wants to learn something. We look things up, or ask my mentor questions when we don't know things, and this has helped me continue to grow as a breeder.

Lexi also looks after the boys in the rattery. Our Male mischief lives in her bedroom. She feeds them daily and plays with them, socializing them into sweet, snuggly, kissy little potato cats who adore humans because of her sweet nature and gentleness.

Outside of the rattery, Lexi is one of the kindest, most compassionate people I know, and I could not be more proud to be her mom. She is more patient than anyone I've met, and her quiet calm is grounding and soothing to animals and people alike. She is funny as heck, too.

Please join me in wishing Lexi a happy 16th!!
