🌟MUZZLE MONDAY🌟….on TUESDAY 🤩 because time ran away from me yesterday and everyday should be muzzle Monday! 🤪

Muzzle conditioning can be a game-changer for high-drive working breeds, offering a powerful tool to manage their intense energy and teach them an “off switch.” Whether in high-stress training, public spaces, or after intense work, a properly conditioned muzzle helps these dogs learn to regulate themselves, offering a clear cue to calm down and take a break. It promotes safety, control, and mental balance, ensuring both the dog and handler can navigate demanding situations with ease.

Controlled Environment and Positive experiences: By putting the muzzle on in controlled settings (e.g., during training sessions, walks, or high-energy play), and with a high reward system ( treats, toys or play) the dog starts to associate it with both calm, controlled behaviour and getting rewarded for a positive object. This is useful when you want to ensure that the dog doesn’t escalate to unhealthy levels of excitement or anxiety.

Teaching the “Off Switch”: For high-energy dogs, having a clear “off switch” can be crucial for their mental health and well-being. The muzzle acts as a tool that encourages the dog to stop, take a break, and lower their arousal levels. It’s not a punishment; rather, it’s a cue for the dog to redirect their focus or settle down, much like how you would ask a dog to lie down or go to their place.

Safety and Control: High-intensity dogs can sometimes get overly aroused, which can result in undesirable behaviors like nipping, snapping, or even biting. Muzzle conditioning ensures that even in situations where the dog might be too overstimulated to control themselves, they’re safely contained. This gives the trainer or owner more control over the situation and minimizes risks.

Enabling Calm in Chaos: For working dogs that are often in high-stress or highly stimulating environments, muzzle conditioning can help teach them that even in chaos, it’s okay to settle and remain calm. For example, when transitioning from an intense search and rescue scenario to a calm downtime, a muzzle helps signal to the dog to keep a clear and calm mind.

🌟MUZZLE MONDAY🌟

Being a teenager can be very difficult, especially when we are supposed to go through changes hormonally while also trying to balance our social life, learning and everything else our day to day life throws at us! This can be similar for dogs and sometimes it can be extremely overwhelming. It is up to us to help them navigate this confusing time by understanding how to safely encouraging them work through it. 🤝

Muzzle training can be incredibly beneficial for dogs who are frequently around other dogs and are navigating the complexities of their emotions and hormones. It provides a sense of security, helping them stay calm and focused in high-energy environments. As dogs learn to manage their reactions, a muzzle ensures they can safely explore new social interactions without the risk of impulsive behavior. This training not only promotes positive socialization but also encourages emotional growth, as dogs gain confidence in handling situations without resorting to defensive or protective behaviors.🌈

🌟MUZZLE MONDAY🌟

Boundary frustration in dogs happens when they become agitated or stressed because they can’t access certain areas or interact with things they desire, such as a door, a gate, or even a person or another dog. This frustration often leads to behaviors like barking, whining, jumping, or even aggressive behavior, as the dog struggles to get past the boundary. 🤺🐿️

Muzzle training can be a helpful tool in managing boundary frustration, especially when you’re actively working on longer-term solutions like counter-conditioning, desensitization, or teaching impulse control. A muzzle can help prevent undesirable behaviors (like biting or excessive barking) while giving the dog time to learn how to cope with the frustration in a safe manner.

Here’s how muzzle training can be helpful in the process:

Safety During Training: If your dog becomes frustrated to the point of aggression or biting when encountering boundaries, a muzzle can help ensure that everyone remains safe during training sessions.
Reinforces Calm Behavior: Muzzle training helps to prevent your dog from escalating frustration to undesirable behaviors, such as lunging, snapping, or even biting. You can focus on teaching calm behaviors while using positive reinforcement.
Reduces Stress: Sometimes, the presence of a muzzle can have a calming effect on a dog. It can serve as a signal that it’s time to focus and engage with their handler, rather than fixate on the frustration.
Provides Control: While working on other training methods to address boundary issues, the muzzle gives the handler more control, especially if the dog’s frustration manifests in high-energy behaviors.

Muzzle training should be done gradually and with positive reinforcement. You want the dog to associate the muzzle with something positive, such as treats or playtime. Never use a muzzle as a punishment; it’s a management tool while you work on behavior modification techniques. Over time, as the dog learns to handle frustration in a more controlled way, the need for the muzzle may diminish.

🚫Muzzle Training: The Secret to Stopping Puppy 💩 Eating! 🐾

If you’ve ever caught your puppy munching on something less-than-ideal, like poo, you’re not alone! It’s a common (though gross) behavior many puppy parents face. But don’t worry—muzzle training can help!

✨ Why do puppies eat p**p?

Curiosity: Puppies explore the world with their mouths, and sometimes p**p is part of that exploration. 🤔
Nutrient Deficiency: They might instinctively be seeking missing nutrients or enzymes from their diet. 🍽️
Boredom or Anxiety: Puppies may engage in this behavior as a way to cope with stress, boredom, or lack of stimulation. 🧸
Learned Behavior: Sometimes they learn it from their environment (like older dogs) or even just because it’s a quick way to clean up! 🧼
💡 How muzzle training helps: Muzzle training helps prevent access to poo and teaches your pup to redirect their attention to more appropriate behaviors. When done correctly, a muzzle can be a safe, comfortable tool to stop the habit, while giving you peace of mind when they’re outside exploring. 🌳

🔑 Pro Tips:

Always introduce the muzzle positively with treats and patience!
Make sure it fits correctly and is comfortable for your pup.
Combine muzzle training with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and mental stimulation to address the root cause of the behavior! 🐕💖
Say goodbye to puppy poo eating and hello to healthier, happier playtime! 🌟

Finn has been doing so good on his walks lately so I thought I would share a little bit of his journey of his time with us, with you!
dog.house and I have been walking and working with Finn’s Reactivity for almost a year now and it has definitely been a journey! We are really good at sharing and communicating honestly about the ups and downs of how it has been with Finn! It felt like for a long time we would move 2 steps forward and 5 steps back, over and over again!

This is why we always encourage owners to never give up on their dogs, we have found with Finn in the past month that less is so much more for him! He is consistently able to walk in a pack and we are now able to pass dogs without it always being a HUGE scream fest! Though it will never been perfect, we are definitely more consistently on the better side of things and thats honestly such a successful and rewarding feeling for both Jenna and I!

Moral of the story is that every reactivity case is different and may need a different approach! Reactivity is not black and white and one dog may respond to a certain method completely differently than the next dog! Patience and consistency is so important and once you apply a method and give it a fair chance to make a difference you should notice a positive change in behaviour.

✨INTRODUCING MUZZLE MONDAY✨

🌟Every Monday🌟 we will be featuring a new reason why muzzle conditioning can be extremely beneficial to your canine companion! Muzzled dogs are good dogs too and I think it’s important we recognize responsible ownership by breaking the stigma that surrounds muzzle use! 🐶

Meeting new people can be intimidating and uncomfortable. Imagine smelling the scent of something you are unfamiliar with in the safety of your own home, or being on a walk you do every day but something seems off this time as you see a stranger approaching you while starring directly at you?

Trust issues are not just something humans possess, for whatever the reason may be for each individual, there are dogs out there that lack trust and they should not just be brushed to the side and/or shut down for having these valid feelings. Instead they should be worked on in a positive and understanding manner. Understanding the physical signs of uneasiness can be extremely beneficial in helping your dog before they move into that fight or flight mode. Muzzle conditioning helps a handler feel more confident which in turn travels through the leash giving your dog the ability to feed off your positive energy rather than your sketchy/unsure energy when a stranger approaches.

In turn a muzzle is a way of advocating for your dog non verbally, as advocating for your dog’s personal space and boundaries is one of the most important ways to build your relationship with them!!

4 hours on the phone a day and walking together whenever we can - Codependence 😂 👯‍♀️

Everyone needs a partner in crime in this industry because we already spend every other second talking to dogs like they understand our full rants🤷‍♀️

To all my lovely owners,

I love your dogs as if they were my own. Which means that when things are going amazing with Training, Daycare, Walks, Boarding etc it feels like I am on cloud nine! However, that also means that when there are not so good days with Training etc I take that as I have failed them. Though I know training is not linear and every day can look slightly different based on something as simple as how we wake up in the morning or change of routine or environment!

I do my very best to keep all my owners as up to date on their day to day as possible and capture everything that I can for myself and you as we both love watching your pups grow! However I am not going to lie keeping up with Social Media, Administrative work (invoices, emails, website, text and Phone) on top of giving all the dogs in my care everything I possibly have is exhausting! I WOULD NOT CHANGE IT FOR THE WORLD AS I GENUINELY LOVE WHAT I DO! I just ask for patience when it comes to responding and scheduling as again it is just me doing all of this and growing up I always knew my passion and journey in life was with animals but I never knew I would run a whole small business on my own! I am so beyond proud of how far we have come, but I definitely am far from perfect and will be the first to admit my mistakes!

I guess what I am trying to say is that I love your furr babies with everything I have and I am doing the absolute best I can for them and you! I understand there is always room for improvement and I appreciate all your trust and encouragement!

Cheers to the good days and learning from the not so good ones!

Love,

Your TNT Family 🤍
