It's fascinating to see and hear dogs determining track direction and committing to following a specific person. A similar decision-making process is likely to occur in scent detection and hunting as well. In this study, The deciding phase lasted 3–5s, while the dogs sniffed at 2–5 footprints, before following the track. During the deciding phase, the dogs moved at half the speed and their periods of sniffing lasted three times as long as during the other two phases. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=819612146203213&set=a.549305146567249

This photo shows why tracking handlers want our dogs to start figuring out the scent puzzle right from the scent pad. Like a phone "acquiring signal", scent detection dogs filter and analyze a wealth of data. Where handlers see a bleak landscape, our dogs discriminate in a contaminated environment using their noses.

A fun visual representation of what your dog sees (smells) every day. Look at how noisy it is and how many tracks there are intertwining. The different animals, people, and dogs movement in just one area. The snow lets us humans see the history of this area and what animals and people have passed through. A dog will smell this every day and know who and what animals have passed through. Smellavision!!!!

Dogs are incredible.

Imagine tracking and detection dogs needing to filter out all this noise and track a single scent down. Amazing!

(Note this is a fun representation, not accurate)

Let your dog choose whether to indicate by sitting or lying down, based on how they encounter the odor plume. Similar challenges occur when dogs find blown articles under bleachers, or between a sidewalk curb and a concrete parking lot bumper, on stairs, etc.

Wonder if your dog would be good at Search and Rescue?
Want to train your dog to follow the evidence left on the trail behind a tracklayer for CKC or AKC tracking tests?

All levels of trackers enjoy this class, with acres of field to track on, only 2 km East of Calgary. Your instructor is Carla Simon, a professional sniffer dog trainer with CKC field and urban tracking titles. Her approach is so straightforward and fun that a 4-month-old puppy demonstrates: https://vimeo.com/659900432/bdef3639de.

LEVELS:
This is a mixed-level class.
• Beginner-Intermediate dogs will prepare you for your first CKC/AKC tracking test or Search and Rescue. We’ll start indoors, training your dog to indicate a glove/evidence. Then we’ll do scent pads and motivational tracking outdoors in the fields. We rely on putting rewards in every footstep, e.g., food for most teams (or toys where the dog strongly prefers). We will set your dog up for success instead of correcting them for going off track.
• Advanced dogs will start with an assessment, and then we’ll tailor indication training and tracks to your level.

EQUIPMENT:
Classes will run, rain or shine, so come dressed for the weather. We recommend dog booties and coats. ALL dogs must track on a tracking harness (recommended) or buckle collar. Please bring three cheap gloves, a hungry dog, lots of high-value food rewards, and water. We recommend a 15-40 ft Biothane longline. If you purchase from Wendy Krenzel at [email protected], ask her for my student discount, and she will deliver to Calgary with a lifetime guarantee. If you can’t get one on time, you can borrow one at the first class. I’ll provide 5 flags to get you started.

RULES:
Dog-dog interactions are never allowed. All dogs must be on a leash and under control at all times, so it’s safe for everyone. Do not let your dog approach any other animal. There is zero tolerance for aggression, which may be immediately excused without a refund. Dogs must wait in your car until it’s their turn to track, like real tracking competitions and deployments.

Tracking Beginners Practice starts in 6 days! Join Hunter's Heart to learn how to start tracking in drive, on Sat. Jan. 23 at 3:30 pm.

Tracking is what most dogs would rather be doing, when they sniff their way through a walk, following every "pee-mail" in town. Through their amazing sense of smell, they detect the smells, gender, age, and even health status of people and animals who have walked by. In tracking, we'll show you how to teach your dog to follow a scent YOU choose: the footprints left by a tracklayer. Tracking/mantrailing is a sport most dogs love and can excel at, as long as they like food or a toy.

No previous experience required. With 80 acres at Barrett Dog Sports, there's a lot of space to progress. Classes will run, with masks and social distancing, outdoors, rain or shine, so please come prepared for changing winter weather. Register at: https://www.barrettoffleash.com/classes.
