Steffi used to be a ‘difficult’ dog. We struggled to cope with Steffi’s behaviours in the first 3 years of Steffi’s life. Chasing wildlife, pulling on lead, jumping on people, difficulty getting her attention around distractions, attention seeking behaviours at home 🤯

In the first pic Steffi was just over 3 years old - same age as many pandemic puppies now. We were just turning the corner of our relationship ☺️

The second photo was taken 6 months earlier. This was the lowest point of our relationship - when I felt like I was failing her, and felt desperately alone in our struggles 😢

Hope came for us when I found teachers who helped me understand her behaviours and how to foster a cooperative relationship with Steffi 🙏

Now? I can’t imagine our life without her. She brings us joy every day 💖

There can be hope too for you and your ‘difficult’ dog. You don’t have to go it alone.

New Year’s Eve is almost here 🎆 …you can help your pets by providing them a safe space in preparation for fireworks ❤️‍🩹

A safe space helps your dog find relief from triggers ➡️ helping them bounce back from ‘a scary night’ 😌

Tips to help your dog (and cats):

1️⃣ Meet your dog’s needs (exercise, small meal, and toilet) before evening festivities begin

2️⃣ Prepare a safe space ahead of time - make sure it’s comfortable with familiar items (blankets, toys, safe treats) 🦴

3️⃣ Do not disturb your dog when they go into their space - but if they seek you out, comfort them 🤫

4️⃣ If you must take your dog outdoors (even in your own garden) in the evening, have them on-lead attached to a secure fitting harness 🦮

Happy belated gotcha day to our beautiful Steffi 💖

7 years ago on 13 April she officially joined our family. We cannot imagine life without her!

(We were so caught up with her recovery following TPLO that we missed marking her gotcha day 🙈)

This photo was taken in April 2016. Steffi was barely 5 months old. She’s a red and white bull breed mix. She’s lying in the garden on unnaturally orange bark chips and looking towards the camera. Her right ear is sticking out sideways and her left ear is flopping down. She is wearing a black collar.

Today I’m grateful for the kind and considerate care we received at .richmond. Steffi loves going to the vets but is terrified of needles. Vets Alba and Clara, along with their nursing team, helped us take a low stress route to getting Steffi ready for her sedation and pre-op 🙏

Note the extra large vet bed to help Steffi get settled and relax in the consult room. We also took extra time to help her relax enough to enable them to give her the injections she needed 💖

Photo 1: Large red & white bull breed dog is sitting on a large grey vet bed in a vet consulting room. She is sitting and looking up at the vet who is off-screen to the right. The dog is wearing a salmon pink and turquoise harness and a brown and pink polka dot collar.

Photo 2: Large red & white bull breed dog is lying with her eyes closed on a large grey vet bed in a vet consulting room. She is wearing a salmon pink and turquoise harness and a brown and pink polka dot collar. Attached to the harness is a yellow sleeve with the words: "Be Nice, I'm Arthritic"

Join us in congratulating our recent Acing Adolescence grads 🐶 🎓

🤯 They each came with their individual adolescent behaviour challenges

🙌 They all progressed in learning how to:

✅ Better cope with frustration
✅ Turn to their humans for support and reinforcement
✅ Better cope with ‘unexpected’ and ‘scary’ events

They wouldn’t have made their progress without the support of their amazing human support teams 💖

Photo 1: Otis a small cream poodle cross dog is standing with his body oriented to the graduate certificate to his right and is looking at the camera. He is wearing a yellow jacket.

Photo 2: Carmelo a small cream Italian greyhound is being held by his two humans (2 white women with dark hair). The graduate certificate is to his left as he looks at the camera. He is wearing a yellow jacket.

Photo 3: Connie an apricot cockapoo is lying on the ground in front of 2 humans. The graduate certificate is being held up by the woman of the pair. Connie is wearing a grey harness.

Photo 4: Archie a black & grey poodle x JRT is lying on a blue mat. The graduate certificate is being held behind him, where his 2 humans are sitting.

Photo 5: Luna a black and white Boston Terrier is sitting on a grey mat. The graduate certificate is held to her right by her human. She is wearing a white harness with colourful polka dots.

We were lucky enough to find a patch of dry weather this week in between all of the rain ⛅️

Steffi had another successful outing in her buggy. She hopped in later into the walk, likely when she was a little sore. And then just enjoyed the scenery 🌷🌱

Pushing my dog in a buggy 💖

How many skills did we train to get here? 🤔

✅ Teaching station to a mat (yes the red noodle mat she’s lying on in the buggy)

✅ Teaching duration on the mat

✅ Increasing the intervals between treats

✅ Teaching Paws Up for the first entry into the buggy

✅ Teaching Down for coming out of the buggy (Down is our cue to come down from sitting on a bed or sofa)

✅ Practicing with the buggy indoors and gradually increasing the speed indoors

✅ Lowering the criteria when we go outdoors in the buggy - going back a few steps in our training to set her up for success

Yesterday was a great start to our outdoor training 🎉

Next big step will be practicing around squirrels 🐿️

🚫 I struggled to find professional training or behaviour support for her that didn't include punishment or aversive tools

❌ Hurting or scaring Steffi didn't sit right with me - that's not the relationship I wanted with my dog

🎓 💪 So, I worked on my skills and knowledge - training, handling and understanding the underlying reasons for her behaviour

❤️ Our relationship evolved into a cooperative / collaborative relationship based on trust, clarity, and joy

⭐️ This is my focus working with you and your dog - building a collaborative relationship and helping you find the joy in your relationship

Quote in white text against a grey background with the photographic image of a dark grey bull breed dog's face:
Hurting and scaring dogs is unfair, unnecessary, and deprives dogs of the joy, freedom, and welfare that they deserved. ~ Kristi Benson

Steffi has had joint problems since she was a puppy. We’re now at the next stage of helping her manage her arthritis - training her to ride in a buggy. A buggy will give us more freedom to go on longer walks and explore new places. When she needs a rest, she can go in the buggy for the remainder of her walk.

Managing can feel like a challenge sometimes. But knowing we can help her enjoy life is EVERYTHING 💖
