New Class: Leave It!
What is force free food avoidance training?
Food avoidance training teaches the dog, essentially, to not eat any and all food related items that they may find on the ground.
This type of training was built on the idea that we want to teach our dogs that WE are the source of good things, rather than punishing them for scavenging (which may teach them to eat faster, or avoid us).
Through a series of scavenging opportunities (I like to call "legalize it!"), management techniques and games for when your dog does find food, we can create a solid plan for preventing this type of unwanted scavenging behaviour.
This class is ideal for if your dog finds garbage or chicken bones on walks, or has a habit of snatching things that fall to the floor before you can get to them. Find yourself pulling food out of your dog's mouth on walks? Then this class is for you!
Class starts on March 9th, and there are still at few spots left! Check out www.littlebrowndogtraining.com/groupclasses to register!

Training: did you know that it happens at all times, in all situations, regardless of if you're formally training or not?
Most of the time we focus on what our dogs should *not* do, rather than realizing we can preemptively teach them what they SHOULD do.
We are currently on vacation, and Mari has limited exposure around kids. She is a large excitable pup, which could lead to trouble! Here's what we do to tackle this situation.
Management-Alternative Behaviour-Monitor Body Language
• Reward an automatic "down". This has been practised in other less distracting settings
• Managing the environment - keeping her on leash and at a distance from the mayhem
• Rewarding "no response" ie. when she looks at the children, looks back at me and keeps her down position
• Watching her body language - the last "look over" was a little more extended, with pronounced "whale eye" and look of concern. Note the foot that came out to stop the car coming closer..! That's also helping management.
• Removing from the situation while we still have success & giving the dog breaks. Once we sat down for dinner, dog goes away with a stuffed Kong. She comes back refreshed and everyone has had a good experience.

Muzzle training: the bloopers reel 🤣
Delaney is a new foster dog who is fearful at the vet, and a very over-exuberant player when she really gets going. We're muzzle training her for safety in all situations where she may forget how to use her teeth appropriately.
Mari is left out of the game, and lets me know. I've taught her a few tricks lately, including climbing on my back, so that may be why she defaulted to this when nothing else worked.
She's also panting hard as they were just playing..never a dull moment, I tell ya 🐶
