Life Skills Class

This is our most popular class! The perfect course for adolescents, adult dogs, and new rescues. This course helps you and your dog learn the basics such as position cues, loose leash walking, place cue, recall, leave it, leash reactivity prevention, how to work with distractions and more! Come learn from a certified and experienced instructor in this fun and inclusive class environment. This class is suitable for dogs and puppies over 4 months of age who are comfortable around people and other dogs.

Did you know that the most common behaviour concern that we get called in for is leash reactivity? Well guess what, we now have a class for that!
This 6-week long class consists of 1 virtual session and 5 in person group class sessions to give you all of the tools you will need to understand your dog's reactivity, manage it and modify it in your daily lives. These reactivity-specific classes are set up in a very controlled format to allow for gradual exposure to triggers in order to build coping skills - note that this is not your regular group style obedience class - you are set up for sucess!

NEW! Does your dog barks, lunge and growls at other dogs or other triggers on a leash? Are you struggling to know what to do or how to stop them from reacting? Then this course is for you!

This 6-week long class consists of 1 virtual session and 5 in person group class sessions to give you all of the tools you will need to understand your dog's reactivity, manage it and modify it in your daily lives. Learn why dogs become reactive, and what skills you'll need to help your dog make better choices. Become your dog's best trainer!

These reactivity-specific classes are set up in a very controlled format to allow for gradual exposure to triggers in order to build coping skills - note that this is not your regular group style obedience class - you are set up for sucess! Maximum 4 dogs per course. In-person ​classes are held at Paws Next Door at 4116 Macleod Trail SE.

Congrats and farewell to our final Life Skills Grad Glass of 2024!! 🐶
This crew worked through skills such as sit, down, place cue, leave it, loose leash walking and more. We were even able to add in some distractions with loose leash walking such as focusing on their human while their dog friends walked by, and worked on friendly introductions from new humans for the shyer pups!
One of our awesome students even made this grad hat, which made for great photos, but didn't last too long 🎓 (oopsies)...
Big shout out to these dogs for learning TONS of new skills while only being babies themselves (teenagers, in fact) - overcoming some fears, and having fun while doing it. We even got to end off the group class with a final play session between new friends.
Thanks to Riley, Finch, Adobo & Dino for coming out! It was great to meet everyone and see you all out there soon in the big world!! 😄

Life Skills Level 2 Class 🧠

This 4-week course is designed to build on everything you've learned in Life Skills class (or equivalent) and put it all together in the real world!
Learn how to work through loose leash walking, leave it, place cue, and how to work with excitement and distractions in different environments. Work on polite manners in public, and learn the practical application of teaching your dog to settle on a mat! In this course we work in different settings - beginning in the classroom and moving to dog friendly stores, even and a dog friendly brewery! As always our classes are inclusive to everyone and we foster a positive and welcoming environment. Classes are held for one hour each week consecutively for 4 weeks. Drop-ins available if space permits.

Guess what? We've got some new offerings coming at ya this winter!

Holiday Dog Walking available - select dates only

Have your dog walked by a professional dog trainer this holiday season! Christmas party? Long day of shopping? Book an outing for your dog in advance! All walks are considered training walks. Let us know what you want to work on - loose leash walking, leash reactivity, enrichment walks and more!

30 min walk - $45
45 min walk - $55

Longer walks can be discussed, however this will weather dependent and based on how comfortable your dog is with the cold. We reserve the right to postpone or cancel walks if the weather is not safe for your pup. Price includes up to 2 dogs per walk, providing they can be walked safely together. Leash reactive dogs should be walked separately to ensure they receive the best training possible. Preference will be given to previous clients and referrals!

Dates available: December 26th to January 1st.

Congratulations to our October grad class of Life Skills! This round we had a few pups from rescue, and although they don't look like it, many were still adolescents themselves!
It's honestly so wonderful to watch everyone grow week to week, become more confident and learn the skills in a safe and welcoming environment. You know you're doing the right things when the dogs quite literally run into the classroom each week, because they're so excited for more! 😄
Congrats to everyone for a job well done - and to Morty, Murphy, Mojo (yes I had a hard time remembering all of those!), Ollie, Jessie and Arty! See you out there 💗

While every client is special to me in some way, every once in a while a client blows me away with their commitment to training and understanding their dog.

These little nuggets have entirely different personalities, but the one on the left (name omitted to protect the innocent 😉) struggled with some fear based reactivity towards dogs and humans. We worked on some leash skills, discussed lifestyle changes that may help, and gave him (& his person) some coping skills. Reactivity can be tough, but sometimes just a few changes and consistency can really help.

Well, two and a half weeks later we had a follow up consultation and the changes were huge! This little guy went from lunging and barking and trying to make his little self appear as scary as possible to being able to see a dog on a walk at a short distance and actively being able to choose to disengage and carry on. It was so great to see! And while changes don't always happen so quickly as that, it's fantastic when consistency works and I get to see the changes that result from dedication to the improvement of this pup's behavior. Way to go! These are the reasons why training can be so rewarding for us and the dogs.

Great job pups & family. Keep it up!!

*On Vacation* - kind of!
Please note that we are currently in BC and getting caught up on emails and social media posting.

I want to give a resounding THANK YOU to all of our students - past, present and future. It has been an incredibly busy year and summer so far, and while we usually take a break for July and August, this year I feel like will be different as we are already scheduling group classes for September 😄

As much as I'd love to say "let's start group classes up next week!" I have to set a limit with myself on working hours and take an actual summer vacation.

In person private consultations will be unavailable until July 10th however we are always open for phone/email assistance and virtual consultations.

We are planning our last summer workshops for mid August and group classes for late August to early September.
