In December I said goodbye to my wonderful little companion, Zorro. He was diagnosed with a severe heart murmur which he battled for 10 months. In that time period Zorro and I had lots of awesome days until they no longer were. He was 12 years.
We adopted Zorro through Alberta Sheltie Rescue as a 10 month old. He grew to be a large Sheltie with lots of s***k and a heart of gold. He camped, hiked and followed me as I painted or rode my horse, putting on a good number of miles together.
Zorro, along with his side kick, Shadow, our blue merle, helped us with fostering dogs that came into our home through Sheltie Rescue. Zorro and Shadow were kind and patient with the dogs we cared for, demonstrating what was expected of them on leash, in the yard as well as how they were to behave in the house. Zorro, in particular, had a great time wrestling with them.
As Zorro aged he took on a new role. He loved visiting senior residences where I often watched him “work the room”. One day as I was signing in at a seniors’ lodge, he got away from me and trotted over to say hello to an older gentleman in a wheelchair. Before I caught up to him he was off to the greet next person and didn’t stop until he had met absolutely everyone in the room.
Zorro was a sweet little guy whom I loved dearly and will forever be in my heart.
