We are coming together as a reptile family to support Megan Shabaga, a cherished member of the BC reptile community, as she battles Stage 3 Breast Cancer. Megan, along with her family, has been a staple in our community for years, and now it’s our turn to help them through this challenging time.

To raise funds, we are offering a variety of donated items listed as digital products, available for purchase on our website. These items will also be available at the BCRC Fall Expo, happening on September 21-22, 2024, with a live draw at 3 PM during the event.

Some items are open for out-of-town supporters to win, so please check the descriptions for eligibility. Let’s come together to make a difference for Megan and her family during this difficult time.

For those that don't want to be entered into one of the draws there is a virtual donation item as well.

All money taken in will be donated to Megan and her family - Email money transfer for payment is preferred but I will eat CC fees for those that want to pay that way.

Memphis Zoo Scientists Achieve World-First in Reptile Conservation

Memphis Zoo scientists have made a groundbreaking achievement in the field of conservation with the first reptile offspring to be successfully produced using frozen semen and artificial insemination. This scientific milestone marks a significant advancement in the zoo’s ongoing efforts to recover the endangered Louisiana pinesnake and underscores the critical role of science in conservation.

The Memphis Zoo’s Science team, led by Dr. Steve Reichling, Beth Roberts, and previous post-doctoral scientist Dr. Mark Sandfoss, has accomplished a world-first by using cryopreserved (frozen) semen to successfully fertilize and produce viable offspring in a Louisiana pinesnake. This success was achieved within the framework of the zoo's Louisiana pinesnake species recovery program, emphasizing the zoo's commitment to species conservation through innovative scientific methods.

A Milestone in Reptile Conservation-
Historically, the concept of the "Frozen Zoo" has primarily focused on mammals, birds, and recently amphibians with reptiles often overlooked. However, this successful production of offspring using artificial insemination and frozen-thawed semen in an endangered snake species demonstrates the potential use of biobanking and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in reptile conservation worldwide.

“The emergence of these 3 hatchlings summed up 5 years of reproductive research and 30 years of Memphis Zoo's use of cutting-edge science and dedication to save the Louisiana pinesnake from extinction. This achievement brought us one step closer to routinely integrating assisted reproductive technology into reptile conservation to preserve genetics and save species,” said Beth Roberts, Senior Reproductive Scientist at Memphis Zoo.

Pioneering Science for Endangered Species-
This project is a significant proof of concept that semen cryopreservation and reproductive technologies can be applied effectively in reptiles, a taxonomic group often neglected in biobanking efforts. The zoo’s team meticulously collected, froze, and later thawed semen, which was then used to successfully inseminate a female Louisiana pinesnake.

Genetic testing by Dr. Tonia Schwartz and graduate student Alexis Lindsey at Auburn University confirmed that the offspring were indeed sired by the donor male, setting a precedent for future conservation efforts in reptiles. “Auburn University is dedicated to impactful science,” said Dr. Tonia Schwartz, Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. “The Schwartz Lab at Auburn University is passionate about conservation and using genetics to understand how animal populations are impacted by threats in their environment. We are proud to partner with Memphis Zoo on this project to use our genetic expertise to validate the successful fertilization using cryopreserved s***m. We see this success as a huge step forward to enable future efforts to improve the genetic health of this species and other threatened reptile species.”

“Memphis Zoo is setting an example for the global community,” said Dr. Mark Sandfoss, who spearheaded the research. “We’ve shown that it’s possible to use cryopreserved genetic material to aid in the recovery of an endangered species, paving the way for similar efforts with other reptile species in the future.”

What This Means for the Future of Conservation-
This achievement comes at a crucial time for the Louisiana pinesnake, which is one of the rarest snakes in North America. With habitat loss continuing to threaten their survival, the ability to utilize cryopreserved semen offers new hope for maintaining genetic diversity in the species and ensuring its long-term survival. Looking to do a fundraiser to raise money for a fellow reptile vendor at the bc show who is fighting cancer. Please inquire if you are also interested in donating something to the raffle. Megan Snider is one of the sweetest and kindest humans that I know. Her heart is so truly genuine which is precious to have in a friendship. It is also apparent in the work she does as a nurse. Patients are so gracefully and gently cared for by this woman. I also so truly admire the incredible role model she is for her amazing children, always leading by outstanding example.
Megan recently got the diagnosis that changed her world in a heartbeat - breast cancer.
Know this Megan Snider! I love you. I'm proud of your strength. I'm humbled by your grace. And I stand beside you in this fight!

Got Sloth?

We do at our show this weekend! Thanks to , and we are bringing you the most interactive booths any Reptile show has ever seen! The Sloth is also bringing a ton of friends and there will also be wallabies, porcupines and hopefully a few other special guests. To get up close and personal with them you can also buy tickets for a personal experience with any of the animals or enjoy them and learn about them from a distance in their enclosures.

Our Green Tree Python got an upgrade to a bioactive natruralistic setup with live plants. This cage is 2' X 2' X 3' With sliding glass doors, Lumenize jungle dawn LED, Repti Rad Heat Panel and junglehobbies Mistking Misting system.

Our Green Tree is spoiled rotten! Thanks again to for the great snake. Hope to get another one from him in the future. Make sure to check him out and give Dave a follow!

Just in time for fall show season we have a new style display for all you breeders out there. There will be another version of these but these are the 2 that are ready to be added to the website.

The small Deli Cup display holds 24 either 8 oz or 12oz deli cups. We will have the option to add the tall 32 oz cups to the top row as an added option

The medium deli cup display holds 16 32 oz or 48 oz deli cups.

These are ideal for the shows in the sense that you have full visibility from the front but access is from the back of unit.

These also come with a shipping box (cardboard with foam) and can add a light as an additional option. It does all come apart for easy transport as well.

We are looking for someone to do Animal care for 3hr per week to keep up on cleaning and feeding of the animals. For now it would be 1 day a week for 3hrs. If you are interested please send us a resume to [email protected].

This could possibly lead to more hours around the shop as well but the main concern is animal care and maintenance.

We are looking for reptile people to help at the WCRE the weekend of August 16-18. This is a paid position or can be used towards store credit. Our usual help is out of town for the show and also vending so we will need 1 or 2 people to help assisting customers. You must be familiar with reptile care and have a general familiarity with reptile supplies and be able to recommend products to customers. Please send us an email with your experience and interest.

Friday will be helping with setting up the booth and pricing products
Saturday will be helping customers all day. Lunch will be provided and dinner afterwards at the vendor bbq
Sunday will be helping with helping customers and helping pack up after the show is over.

We are confirmed to be vending the in Missisauga, ON September 14-15. It has been 8+ years since we have done a show out that way and looking forward to vending with and .

We only have a small booth and will only be bringing reptile caging, racks, display cases, Repti Rad Heat Panels, and heat tape.

If you are in the market for any of those things I encourage you to reach out and get a pre-order in. Many of the items we will only have 1 or 2 of and displays especially we will only have 1 or 2 total not all the different types and sizes. Let me know what you are looking for and we can get a pre-order together for you to ensure you get what you need or if looking for new displays to spruce up your CRBE Display that we have them ready to go for you.
