Earmites
Ear mites a relatively mild parasite infection - and unfortunately are quite common. These guys can go unnoticed for a long period time before symptoms become apparent. Some symptoms can be, but are not limited to:
- Excessive shaking of the head
- Itching of the ears, head, or neck
- General itching all around
- Thick red/brown/black crusts in the outer ear
- Scratch marks on the back side of the ear
Even if your dog doesn't show any symptoms, it's important to be cleaning your pet's ears as part of regular routine, especially if they are floppy or long!
To diagnose whether or not your pet has mites is quite simple - check under a microscope! The treatment for them is typically fairly simple and is often successful without complications. Your pet will go home with some ear medication that kills the mites, alongside some anti-inflammatory/pain medication to help soothe the irritation in the ear. Just make sure you also thoroughly disinfect all surfaces inside the interior of your home as well!
